It is a good chapter, it really manages to sell Kunishige's character and explaining his motives, giving him some well needed depth, but let's not act as if this single chapter is more than it is. Chiaki, so far, has served more as a catalyst than an actual character. Unless Tako gives her some actual agency right now (because we all know she is gonna die, she is basically collecting death flags), she will remain as just that. Kunishige and Chiaki with sparklers is a cute panel, but it has little weight behind it because there is very little actual exploration of their dynamics.

I hope I’m not the only one who feels like this, but the whole thing with Kunishige’s parents felt forced to me. It was like it was trying way too hard to be tragic without any of the effort. The panel that said his dad died on his birthday made me roll my eyes, and the thing with his mom trying to gouge his eyes out and then committing suicide in the bathtub, it felt like it was trying way too hard to be sad.But don’t get me wrong, this chapter was amazing. I kinda like how it ties back to the theme of legacy and fatherhood, and I thought it was really smart how it recontextualized the thing about Kunishige’s house being a complete shithole from something meant for comedic relief to something tragic. And obviously the whole section with Chiaki was adorable. Still a great chapter to come back on, this arc is only going up from here.
