bkub continues to innovate in the field of absolutely untranslatable bullshit
>>
>>289683819
What’s her name?
>>
I've reached the point in my series' typesetting I've been dreading, where a recurring "concept" referenced regularly through one of the main plotlines is based off of a pun that's basically untranslatable.
>character is in a big fight with a friend, breaks off contact saying, "もういい"
>gets visually represented as a semi-serious gag where the character is imagined a rock monster named モウイーワ
>this rock monster comes in variants which all maintain the pun
Since it's "technically" a proper noun and the visual metaphor of rock is important I think the only option is "just romanize the monster name as Mouiiwa and give it a TL note" but I'm still second guessing. In part because it gets referenced a lot within the narrative going forward.

The "for now" part worries me. Main reason why I haven't looked for CS6 is fear of keyloggers, RATs, and so on. Also curious as to how it's working at all. Does Photoshop not phone home nowadays? Figured it was impossible to crack now because of that. Mainly want to try out that remove tool and its other AI toys. See how it compares to NovelAI's inpainting.

>Main reason why I haven't looked for CS6 is fear of keyloggers, RATs, and so on.
The old-ass CS6? I pirated that quite a few years back and I have used it for a while. Install got fucked up one time, somehow, but I could plain uninstal it and then instal the same crack (following the same steps), and it's worked fine ever since.

>Mainly want to try out that remove tool and its other AI toys.
I get a message that it needs to connect to the internet, and when I enable the network, I get an error message that it doesn't work. Nothing about that I need more vram or anything. My guess is that the other anon is wrong and remove tool doesn't work on pirated photoshop.

I still haven't really found anything better than the combination of panel cleaner and chat gpt.
https://github.com/VoxelCubes/PanelCleaner
Main issue with most other translation tools is that they goof up the text order, which quickly makes a lot of text illegible.
Manga OCR used in panel cleaner still struggle a bit with handwritten text, so usually I use google lens to help out when I struggle with that. But the easiest work around there is just not working on manga with a lot of hand written text honestly.

I feel like scanlations helped me when I was in a dark place and just had to feel like I was doing something. And I guess the time wasn't wasted, I've learned a lot about different things along the way.
Can't exactly say I ever worked on anything groundbreaking, and nothing has been adapted to an anime so far, but still it was somewhat enjoyable.

That's not unusual, having something constructive or/and creative to reorient and focus yourself towards can be quite helpful after life hits a big snag. Doing something that's good, something that's enjoyable, something that's useful. Maybe even all three at once.

It can be a very healthy and productive way to cope, in many cases.

That's genuinely a touching sentiment.
I too think that it helped me learn some things. Mostly Photoshop, I don't think I would have learned it to the extent I did if it weren't through practice.
>>289694324
I got into the hobby because I wanted to read series that were dropped. So I pretty much have a personal interest in it.
But I think what truly kept me motivated is that I had the luck of getting a unicorn group leader. The kind of guy who does his share and more, and in turn motivates others.

>I got into the hobby because I wanted to read series that were dropped.
Why didn't you learn Japanese?
>>

At the time? Laziness and procrastination with useless things. Getting through the editor route was easier as well but I can't deny that those were the primary reasons.
>>
>>289695213
I started learning Japanese, but quit halfway through because it was just easier using mtl, and I can just proofread and fix stuff with the japanese I know.
Then again I wasn't learning Japanese for anything else than working on scanlations. I guess I might pick up japanese later down the road if I feel like it again. But right now with the tools available it doesn't really seem worth it any more.

how do you deal with typos?
>>
>>289695323
Pretend they're not there unless it feels like they're on purpose. I regularly compare the magazine chapters to the tank chapters for my series and those are just one of the handful of small changes that always get fixed. Others are seemingly innocuous like changing a hiragana character in a word with kanji, changing fonts or styles, moving text over by 2 pixels or adding furigana.
>>
>>289695430
I remember one time I used the magazine script for the volume raws, and the dialogue didn't fit. Several bubbles had been changed. Didn't know they even made changes like that.
>>
>>289695473
Actually changing the text content is pretty rare for me. The biggest difference I've seen so far is that a page in the volume got a whole new bubble with new text that wasn't in the magazine.
>>
>>289695278
Hey, that's one way of going about it.
If things got better for me I'm planning on learning it first thing. Not just for manga but for communication and knowledge in general. Having an extra language always opens so many doors.

What are the sites that actually lets you upload shit yourself now that bato's down? Usually I just upload to Mangadex and let the aggregators scrape from it. But It's fucking annoying when I update any old chapters with edited/fixed art from volume releases and the aggregators don't reflect the change. Most people out there don't even read from MD these days so they're reading the old releases. There has to be at least a few new big sites that actually let scanlators upload their own releases.

Kek, you remind me of the Eden daily. Where someone kept insisting that the official translation was wrong only to get disproven by posting the raws, twice.
But yeah, most people who insist on fan scans can't read moonrunes. They probably saw legitimate fumbles by official TLs and then assume it's the norm. People don't even post raws for actural readers anymore. They just make the claim and move on.

I think a lot of grifters are either other groups that want to snipe or delay your releases for some reason, or it's people from the industry grifting. I sort of doubt the industry would use grifters though, they're severely shilling but grifting like that seems rather pointless. So most likely another group that wants to snipe your project.

the trick is trying to only work with people you know I guess with experience
and to recruit from the correct channels and not like in the scanlation school discord or from mangadex recruitment, or a recruting credits page
I still think the main purpose of the scanlation school is grifting, they give so terrible advice and have so many bad opinions. pretty much the only good thing about the scanlation school is the scanlation school script (which is maintaned by a user there and not part of scanlation school per se) and the scanlation school font pack (which apparently isn't possible to download anymore, but there's a catbox with it posted earlier).

Does anyone here have any suggestions for manga that are good for studying Japanese? I'm not an absolute beginner, but a lot of the stuff I liked to read in English skews older or has really literary Japanese, so I don't run into a lot of what I actually study. I just don't want to have to force myself to read romcom slop.

Length isn't an issue as long as it's something interesting, and I don't mind looking up vocab, I just need stuff where the grammar is more true to life and every other bubble doesn't have shit like にあらずor possessive がs.

I like martial arts stuff mainly, but anything that isn't just romcom/ecchi slop would be fine.

The argument that's always made is "if you do a bad job, redrawing SFX looks like shit." AKA skill issue. That chart doesn't even show maximum effort; there should be 2 more tiers with stylized SFX, similar to what you see with font choices in "bad" but with some text warping to blend into the art, and lastly fully handdrawn SFX. Not that I think there's anything wrong with taking the easy route since we're all doing it for free.
>>
I've come to terms with the fact that nothing else I will do in my life life will impact anywhere near as many people as the scans I've worked on. Even if most people only spend a couple minutes or hours trying out series. And considering they don't die with me, I kinda think of the 200~ volumes I've done as my legacy. Can't think of any other productive avenues I would have stuck with as long as this.
>>
>>289715578
Delinquent manga. It's mostly normal ass conversations without any supernatural or highly unique bullshit (you don't need to know 'kage bunshin no jutsu' when you're in Japan), so you can use it in real life. Which comes with an added benefit; Japanese (men) will generally be highly entertained when baka gaijin talk to them sounding like an 80s yankii. It catches them off guard.

It also fits perfectly with your martial arts preference. Akita Shoten as a publisher is probably your best bet, they still publish a ton of delinquent manga.
>>
>>289717801

Most Crows/Worst related series are easy enough to get into (not Guriko, that's set in Kyushu which is a miserable dialect to learn Japanese with). Stay away from Mizuta Makoto series, he gets way up his own ass. Rookies, Rokudenashi Blues and Great Teacher Onizuka would probably be fine too. Start with something from a shounen magazine, so you have furigana to hold on to. Nothing will put you off learning Japanese faster than having to look up every almost single kanji that comes your way. A-Bout, Drop, Gang King, even the atrocious Tokyo Revengers all qualify (even with the time travel shenanigans in the last one)
>>
>>289715786
That's the thing. They don't know yet they speak like they do. You can bring evidence yet people will dismiss it because of the romanticised view of "corporate vs fanmade". Label will win over the end result for those who lack the knowledge, it's not even a scanlation problem it's an Internet phenomenon. It doesn't help that actual official mistranslations get a lot more coverage. So the idea stuck.
Me and you know there is more to it. But good luck trying to convince people who can't differentiate between a scanlation and an official release.

The main ones I know are Comix and Mangafire. Mainly because they scrape everything yet they note what the source is. If someone is reading or collecting the best scans they can see which source is better to rip. There is also Weebcentral. It, normally, takes the offical or best-looking scans. But it's issue is that it resize images.
You really don't get noticed by them. They are aggregator so by default they rip from MD or officiall rips when they get uploaded.
>>
>>289709349
People just want to work on something big because they assume there's some kind of clout or e-celebrity to be had in fan translating, when in reality nobody reads credits pages and I imagine very few people who regularly read manga could name any of the people responsible for releasing it, outside of maybe group names.
