I think the fact that Tatsu has taken like a historic amount of breaks this year speaks to the fact that he no longer knows what he's doing with this manga. He's having trouble plotting it out and when he comes up with something he does these really elaborate demonstrations of artistic flair to try and make it up to the reader that he's floundering. I think he's hoping he can limp to season 3 of the anime and then the renewed hype will let him stall his wheels some more.
