While Yesugei kidnapped her due to her beauty and fertility, he conducted the kidnapping as revenge against the Olkhunut since they traditionally have their daughters marry the Mongol Qiyat clan heads, and sending her to marry the Merkit instead was a grave insult to the clan.Naturally, the Merkits aren't too happy with this, and in turn, they attack Temujin's Qiyat clan and kidnap his bride Borte and Yesugei's 2nd wife Sochigel (mother of Temujin's half brothers Bekhter and Belugutei) while Temujin and his brothers were forced to hide in the mountains.They then had Borte forcibly marry Chilger-Bökö, the younger brother of Chiledu, and while Sochigel was given harsh treatment by the tribe as she became a concubine to a poor old Merkit soldier, and her last appearance had her wear rags of sheepskin.
