I had no clue on what Criterion was but then I looked at their website and I do have to say it is cool that they do have a lot of classic films on blu ray.
Good for Eva I guess but I already have my GKIDs collectors blu ray

They've only just started adding anime, and I'm not sure they know what actually good anime is. There's a lot of 50s and 60s films that might be high brow and artistic enough to add.

But Gunbuster was probably a hint they were diving into Gainax and Eva.

Also, they should look into Soviet and French animation as well.
>>
Can we all just disregard NGE as normalfag slop. I'm getting tired about hearing about it and how great it is. Jerk it to Rei and Asuka's nipples. That's about it.

well made and influential. keeps a 50/50 balance of respectable artistic drama, and otaku fanservice sex comedy show. It is thus highly accessible.

What's this shit supposed to be? According to Google, it's a "catalog of cult films focused on quality," but the lists are full of garbage and the anime catalog is a joke. Is it some kind of e-celebrity site or something? Are the threads just ads?
>>
>>289786243
if you dont want to hear about it just add evangelion to your filters
>>
>>289786295
It used to be a curated film service with respectable picks, but now they'll add literally anything they get the license to. Anybody who cares about the medium switched to MUBI.

Why isn't the whole K-ON! series up there? Yes, the whole thing should be available for a thousand years. While we're at it, Put Azumanga Daioh up there too. Then the future generations will have context to where K-ON! came from.

The seventies is where it really got good. They need to add Belladonna of Sadness and Cleopatra.

Criterion is not a "hall of fame" or "seal of quality" and never has been. It's just a distribution label.

Criterion Collection and Criterion Channel (streaming service) are separate, but there's overlap.

The initial goal was to get proper high quality home releases of foreign films, or films that hadn't gotten one yet. Some of the films they actually did the first HD scan of the original film, and did some visual error correction as well. They made a LD release for Akira because up to that point it had only been a shoddy VHS release.

Movies are chosen for historical relevancy rather than just quality per se. Many films are in fact mediocre and boring, but important historical films. But it's good that someone gave them a nice high quality home release. Cult and foreign films overlap heavily with high quality films, so it got a rep for high minded art films. The channel probably plays into this, as a means to entice people to sign up.

Criterion is also specifically why Come and See is so big now - Janus films and Criterion restored the film. Upon its' release it got a warm critical reception, but was quickly forgotten about. But it's the 2020 BR release that gave it a lot of new found fans and praise.

Outside of Akira, they haven't ever done anime home releases. I believe there's a lot of Japanese and soviet animated films that deserve better home releases. As well as films that have gotten a good home release, but could find home on their streaming channel, for people to see for the first time.

As another said, Criterion Channel is completely different from Collection.

Criterion Collection is VERY selective and prestige-driven. It releases a limited number of titles each month as premium, definitive editions (with restorations, extensive supplements, and collector packaging). These are films Criterion has licensed and invested in deeply. Think canonical works by directors like Kurosawa, Bergman, or Godard, plus some modern standouts. Animation is rare here and only a handful of titles over the years, with Akira being a notable early exception on LaserDisc.

Criterion Channel is more expansive and flexible. It streams a large, rotating library (thousands of titles at any time) that includes many physical Criterion releases, plus a wider range of "classics and discoveries" from other studios or rights holders. Programming is heavily themed and curated into monthly spotlights, double features, director series, genre explorations, and guest selections which allows for more eclectic or unexpected picks that might not get a full physical release. This makes Channel feel more like a dynamic film festival rather than a fixed "canon."

This isn't news and it fits with Channel's style of surprising, fun, or thematic inclusions.

Anime has been mainstream for at least two decades.

>Criterion Collection is VERY selective and prestige-driven.
It's the same collection that has movies like Armageddon. I appreciate some of the work they do, but they're not people who know much about the medium.
>>
>>289784961
It should never have become respected or mainstream. It becoming those things ruined it.
