I keep seeing people alluding to this movie being dark but not actually explaining why. Is it actually disturbing, is is this just another "And yes, this aired on PBS kids" situation?
>>289796320>TasuketeBut why?
>>289796790
its just like how doraemon movies get serious and slightly dark when they make movies, except it contrasts even more against the cutesy art and voice here
>>289796763A little bit of this and a little bit of that, to explain it would be to spoil the movie. It's just that there's no "happy end" that's usually expected from a kids movie.
So deskudo was once a normal woodland critter before he got his body stolen by an evil monster ?

Every chapter they're either happily eating something, or they're right in the middle of almost dying

>>289796763You know how Japanese mermaid lore goes, right? The movie is an arc about a mermaid, in a series where:A) mimics pretend to be friendly creatures to eat the cute creaturesB) sometimes cute creatures corrupt into monsters that eat cute creaturesC) often an advertised restaurant or resort turns out to be a monster of some kind luring cute creatures to their deaths/eternal servitudeAlso during the summer holidays it's typical to screen educational movies about WWII for younger audiences since they're in the middle of their school year and there's war anniversaries. This is why Japanese tweets about the Chiikawa movie are joking about eating your neighbours in a summer WWII drama. It all kind of aligns.
>>289798718The fact they choose Yuka Iguchi who also voiced Tsukihi the cuckoo bird that kill a baby in the wombs and take over it's place as the family's child is pretty jarring. And they both act in the same bratty way
>>289800733The tweets about Chiikawa movie I'm seeing are mostly like this https://x.com/matatagix/status/2081997099395420612
>>289801385Only because 今日の日はさようなら is part of the ost, there's even a trailer with it, and that Eva scene traumatized a sizeable audience.
>>289801609I assume its also because of that one part
So the weeding system starts at 5 and as you advance you go to 4, to 3, to 2, and 1 right? Based on how difficult of weeds and areas you can handle.
>>289801631Well, it only plays 2 times, not in that scene, but you should know.>>289801681Yeah.

I remember a comic before where the eating guy was eating a frito pie. I couldn't find it when i went through the chapters though. When did it happen?
>>289794708Isn't it the Siren's fault overall? She drew first and final blood. The most responsible for everything if you add up the score. If she had let things go after finding the truth it would've been better for everyone. It would've been a more even slate. As things are, she's the most evil but unfortunately also invincible. I don't think it's as ambiguous as people are saying.
>>289803266Siren accidentally hit someone's boat without realizing it, but she also was behind all the posterity on the island, all the crops growing and the plentiful nature. Saw some japanese posters talking about how Siren is basically god of the sea, and just like a god enraged, she couldn't let things go when her servants where horribly murdered. The first action was an innocent mistake, the second action murdering the mermaid was where things became intolerable. After that no one can really blame Siren for hunting down the killers to seek revenge, especially killers that had gained eternal life and tried becoming more than human. Story is about sin and punishment; it all started with an innocent mistake, and then it spiraled down into mortal sin with committing murder, and you've basically fucked yourself for all of eternity unable to die, Siren will catch you eventually for the sins you committed.Siren was actually quite courteous to visitors to the island if it knew they weren't one of the culprits. It saved the trio in the cave when it realized they weren't the culprits. Siren's eyes only glow red when its mad, which gives you a lot of clues when its actually angry or when its just messing around, or when its actually furious. When the visitors to the island attacked it, it was never really mad even when they got in the way, Siren isn't especially quick to anger despite having a lot of reason to be angry. When you're immortal you kinda grow attached to the only other creatures around as immortal as you, who also form your singing quartet.Even the villager who murdered the mermaid, the one saved by it immediately knew that their lives would be hell from now on because of this, it would have been easier to die normally most likely. They jumped to murder pretty quickly when they didn't even know if their friend was dying for sure.

>>289795555What do (you) think?
Hachiware for stopping them from killing Siren, desu.
>>289796763Chiikawa is an interesting strange series. Its a whole series of shorts (over 300+ now I believe) and its a world of cute little creatures, monsters, weird guard knights, Food growing on plants, Mass hysteria. No fucking idea how it got a movie. Merchandise must have sold really fucking well.
>>289806699Tiny little potatoes. I'm sad the last thread ended early.

>>289806729>No fucking idea how it got a movie. Merchandise must have sold really fucking well.>3.6 millions in circulation for 8 volumesI mean, the insane merch popularity aside, even the manga that was distributed for free on the internet sold really really well
>>289809612>the manga that was distributed for free on the internet sold really really wellI do feel sorry for anyone who despises this series. I've watched a fraction of episodes but I really do like it a lot.
>>289794708This movie was way scarier than I thought it'd be. I'm glad it was, the bit in the anime where Usagi turned red after Chiikawa fucked with that wand also took me by surprise. Can't wait to watch it again with subs.
https://x.com/i/status/2083449111035203675Sometimes I wonder if this series is too deep for me
>>289810530This is why I don't mind Anoko turning into a beast and feeling well over it. If you could turn into a superior being overnight and rise above the rest, would you want to go back to your old self? You could even theorize that most chiikawas that we see in the story don't turn into beasts because of friendship, most are seen together with someone, in concerts, at restaurants, during festivals and movie nights, they can endure stress and emotional turmoil of their life and prevents them from turning into beasts. Anoko remembers being mostly alone, it was inevitable for it to turn beastly.
Where does the manga still get scanlated? The latest scans on mangadex are two years old.
>>289794708I really don't understand why /a/ doesn't talk more about this GODTIER phenomenon, were the Japanese take "kids" series like Chiikawa, Shin-chan, Doraemon, Lupin and other popular "kids" series and make GODTIER movies. Like the majority of /a/ don't understand how HIGH EFFORT this stuff gets.www.youtube.com/watch?v=21lcVgktfjw
>>289811225You have to search for the webcomic page releases. There's https://x.com/chiikaaawa too.
>>289804167eating mermaid gives you immortality is common knowledge to japanese
>>289810794They imply it's a witch going around switching bodies between chikawas and monsters
>>289811225You're not reading the right section on Dex
>>289813297That's the case for Momonga and Dekatsuyo, but how do you explain the monster that suddenly appears inside a restaurant when Shisa is studying? The Yoroi-san even talk about suspending the part-timer license right after, sort of implying it was a chiikawa that turned into a monster while on the job.So far it's too vague about what really happens, but that's what makes it fun.

Reminder that a kind anon on /wsg/ subtitles the TV series eps every week and provides additional webms and info on the food and culture references. If you ask he's got a download folder full of the previous eps starting from like 64 (the official subs were slow as fuck and went on breaks. In Japan they air two episodes a week on Tuesday and Thursday so it fell behind fast even with the hiatus).
