So we see Tohji get shuffled off, and a new kid descends from the heavens to be Shinji's best friend who gets killed and sends him into overdrive. Isn't it weird that Kaworu has the same story arc as Tohji does but only in a single episode, like his whole story was rushed to hell? And he functionally just replaces Tohji in the grand narrative, where he shows up in all promo material like he was always there. And with this, Hikari and the glasses kid gets shuffled to the side too. In fact, all the classroom kids get forgotten about after a while and just vanish from the story.

Toji being written out, and the rushed timeline, meant that Hikari is functionally written out as well. Eps 25-26 were mean to be "normal" eps, but it was timeline rather than budget that forced them out the door so they used markers and still images. In initial plans, Hikari might have had more time, more episodes, and more screentime. I can see her being featured in eps 25-26. Anno had already planned End of Evangelion to cash in on the series success, so 25-26 were never meant to end the story as is.

Thats why he gets so fixated with kaworu despite being a single episode character.The build up and the middle episodes that feel like filler monster of the week are great, because they give you that familiarity and comfiness just to take it away. Wouldnt make sense if Shinji suffered from ep 1 to 26. You need some stability to destroy.
