Having watched the series for the first time this year, I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand it was genuinely shocking and I didn't see it coming. I expected that the titans were created by the ruling class of the walls in a failed experiment for human evolution or something and that's why they were hiding the truth, not that there are thriving human empires and that Paradise is a zoo/reservation for the Eldians. On the other hand I had seen this before with that movie by M. Night Shyamalan with the village people living in a national park. It killed the mistique of the outside world for me and dashed any hope that we would see expeditions to the ruined rest of the world and meet rag tag societies of humans surviving in their own way, like a post apocalyptic thing. Reminds me of a treeline that I would walk past as a kid and fantasize of what lies in those woods and when I actually went to explore, I ended up in a supermarket parking lot after a few yards. It also shifted the story from a post apocalyptic fairy tale to a GOT style political drama.

Oh really, do go on.

The series has only gotten worse as it went on

I managed to finish it since I got that far, but it was never the same again. The whole marley politics stuff bored me to tears compared to season 2's expeditions beyond the wall.

desu it all went to shit when Ymir (modern) and all those other characters that had been built up died.
It's like, oh ok there's no point getting invested in anyone or anything since Isayama is just gonna throw the baby out with the bathwater whenever he runs out of ideas for anything

I was always more interested in the world and what it looks like outside the walls, rather than the characters.

kek, I know that feel, it's ironically surreal going back to the familiar when you expect adventure. I guess you can relate to Eren in that sense, he was really disappointed that there wasn't anything to explore, just more people who were just as shitty as the former Eldian government. The world wasn't "pure" like he'd hoped in the fantasies Armin sold him about the ocean, but his reaction to it, along with all the other factors surrounding his choices, turn the story into a unique sort of tragedy.

I do relate to Eren in that moment and even though it wasn't what I hoped for, it genuinely shocked me and I didn't see it coming (even though I've seen a movie with that premise before, it just never crossed my mind). For all its faults in the final quarter of its run, aot is one of the rare pieces of media that I was fully immersed in.

Because reiner called themselves "warriors" I wasn't expecting modern society. I feel kinda cheated, if not for that I'd guess the twist immediately.

I stopped reading this shit as soon as Eren transformed into a titan. If I'm gonna read a mecha story, I'd rather they have cool designs and weapons.

there was clearly an outside world after the uprising arc failed to reveal all the secrets

One thing that a lot of people latched on to as a revelation was the photograph, as in photo technology didn't exist in Paradise. But I never really got what was the big deal, since they had the odm gear that was pretty high tech. I just assumed that photography also existed, so it wasn't as much of a wow moment for me.
