A suspenseful episode this week with a mysterious new character, tragic love stories and some paranormal activity.
Today's episode was too spooky and it isn't even Halloween.
>>289815646>and some paranormal activity.eek!
I had some doubts but yeah, Kugirie works for Natsuno
Overall pretty good episode, nothing really flashy but the atmosphere was on point, especially in the seance at the end. However, there were a number of changes from the manga that I'm not exactly a fan of, mostly related to Natsuno. First of all, she smiled a lot less than she did in these scenes in the manga. There, she came across as a bit sassy, while in the anime she's quite matter-of-fact. Now, I can understand why they did it, since her character wasn't really established yet and it does clash a bit with her characterization later on, but I like her having a bit of an chipper, even psychotic edge to her. Also, her line about giving the doctor the medicine because she was moved by his love was anime-original - in the manga she doesn't answer Mao's question at all. You could kind of infer that as her reason from the doctor's flashback, but I imagine this is also another case of the anime trying to soften the protagonists' moral ambiguities a bit. Also, not exactly characterization-related, but Natsuno originally had her pant legs pulled up in the flashback, damn it!
>>289817448>The anime robbed us of NatsulegsCurse you, Sunrise
Natsuno's voice is great.
>>289817448>there were a number of changes from the manga that I'm not exactly a fan ofI'd also add to your points that I prefer how Masago is depicted in the manga, where it looks more like a corpse. I guess they still want to mantain a bit of ambiguity in the anime (and to be fair we still don't fully know what's the matter with her), but I think she looked a bit too "fresh", especially the eyes
>>289817448>>289817990You know, I'm glad we're discussing what are essentially small nitpicks about the adaptation. It could've easily been lazy and uninspired but I think they've been doing a great job and elevated the manga several times.

Furinkan guys got on camera for their 30th anniversary. https://youtu.be/PHZwsKB8l9I?si=ajuHyfxRu4IOCD2JI know it is only tangentially related to MAO but I know I appreciate these two old fat nerds and all they do on their website, even if it has a few mistakes and typos here and there.
>>289817448I figured they'd change it. I half wondered if that was a localization thing or something else. She didn't feel like herself for a while.
>>289818082Oh, sure. I'm quite happy with how the anime has turned out so far, even if there are some things to nitpick here and there (like these majestic seagulls, lmao)

>>289820097For comparison
>erai already two episodes behindlazy fucks
Nanoka felt so extra in today's episode
>>289821858Yeah, extra cute
I think this was a thematically interesting episode. On one hand, it explored the topic of loss of love and how people react to it, with Domon being okay with dooming people to death for his wife's sake, Sana revealing a side of her emotions that Mao had never seen her express before, or how Kamon and Mao both express the same sentiment of wanting their beloved to be happy even if they cannot be together. On the other hand, the relationship between Mao, Daigo and Sana almost feels like a deliberate rejection of Rumiko's typical love triangles, with one side essentially giving up immediately. And yet, even though Mao clearly acted according to his own principles by not intervening between Daigo and Sana, he also seems to consider his inability to console Sana after Daigo's death a moral failing on his part. Thinking about it, I feel like this kind of "subverted love triangle" aspect is something that crops up in many places later on in the series, as well.
>>289820097>>289820120Damn, calves and thighs are lewd now?
>>289822250I thought that they might have wanted to keep the way she's dressed in flashbacks consistent since it's just a quick shot here. But then again, she shows up that way in other flashbacks later on too, so I don't know. Guess we'll see.Really, since they made Taisho-era Natsuno more reserved than she was in the manga but kept her cheerful in the flashback, they should have kept the pants too to further accentuate the difference in her personality then and now.

>>289817448>>289820120>>289822250What the fuck are they doing? Also, disagree on it not being characterization related. Natsuno having her hakama pulled up showing her legs and thighs is a deliberate character design choice that communicates things about her personality.

>>289826076>I don't make the rulesYou literally made up that rule
>>289826325Yeah, agreed. She is a practical person. I can't imagine it was a fan service concern. I assume it was just lazy animation.

o, my MAO
>>289822239>On the other hand, the relationship between Mao, Daigo and Sana almost feels like a deliberate rejection of Rumiko's typical love triangles, with one side essentially giving up immediately. Not really because Mao was never really that into Sana in the first place and they only had an arranged engagement, it’s effectively like all other Rumic “love triangles” where the male lead is never allowed to have a serious interest in any other woman besides the Rumiko self-insert.Like most Rumic love triangles we even have the crazy yandere stalker (Yurako) who tries to get between the main couple.
>>289815646Finally, it felt like she would never show upWhere will the Anime end if she's just showing up now?
>>289834421Two bucks on the last scene being Daigo's resurrection
>>289834822Anon...
>>289834395The point is that most of Rumiko's characters in Mao's position would have started competing with Daigo for Sana's love. The fact that he doesn't speaks to both his respect for Daigo, but also his tendency to try to avoid conflict. But that self-imposed decision to stay out of Sana and Daigo's relationship ends up keeping him distant from Sana even after Daigo's death, when he should reasonably have at least comforted her because Daigo was dear to both of them.
>>289818090Taisho cuties
Is it continuing beyond this season? What's confirmed?
>>289838050Nothing confirmed yet, AFAIK
>>289838050I hope so
>>289819360Oh hey, they answered all my questions and threw in a shout out to Dr. Shibasato who recently showed up in the MAO anime.
Nanoka is cute and you can't argue against that.
So... is that it? That's all the girls we get? Nanoka and this one? Her previous works had like 8-10 main girls each.
>>289835914>The point is that most of Rumiko's characters in Mao's position would have started competing with Daigo for Sana's love. The fact that he doesn't speaks to both his respect for Daigo, but also his tendency to try to avoid conflict. He didn’t compete with him because he was never really into Sana in the first place, because again Rumiko never allows her male leads to have serious interest in any other woman that’s not her self-insert. Now if this was another man who was into NANOKA for instance, then we would probably see Mao start to sweat, as it goes for literally every Rumic main romance.
>>289842130There are a few other recurring girls introduced later, but for the most part Mao has a fairly male-centric cast
>>289842937Why is she doing fujobait all of a sudden? Does she like guys now?
>>289842425I get the feeling that this whole discussion about self inserts has really spiraled out of control and makes very little sense anymore. Nanoka has very little in common with characters like Akane or Kagome
>>289834421looking at 2nd cour trailer... yurako's backstory>>289834475doubt it, character va announcements were only up to soma and kagari renji and mei are after yurako's backstory but before zombie daigo
>>289844225Why do you think all self-inserts of an author need to be the exact same?
>>289835914>would have started competing with Daigo for Sana's love. this wasn't a case of "they both have an eye on her and want to ask her out", sana was already daigo's woman before mao ever showed up>>289842425>He didn’t compete with him because mao had already lost
>>289845210They don't all have to be the exact same, but they must have distinct characteristics that allow us to recognize them as such. Otherwise, self insert becomes just a buzzword
>>289845331feels like a buzzword exclusive to rumic threads at that, I don't see the term used nearly as often in other threads I've been in...
>>289845252>sana was already daigo's womanNot to the point that it would have stopped many of Rumiko's older characters, I think (indeed, it wouldn't have stopped some of the characters in Mao as we'll see). And anyway, it doesn't matter if the specifics aren't exactly the same, the main thing that matters for my reading is Mao choosing to give up on his love instead of pursuing it through conflict.
>>289846683
>>289846542>it have stopped some of the characters in Maoyou mean the murderous *villains* of the story? that's a poor comparison anon
>>289847623oops accidentally deleted the "wouldn't" my bad>it wouldn't have stopped some of the characters in Mao
>>289843773I doubt it was intentional or anything, it probably just kind of flowed from the kind of story Rumiko wanted to tell. Are there any characters you'd rather have had as girls?

>>289844225>Nanoka has very little in common with characters like Akane or KagomeBecause it appears Rumiko has calmed down some in her old age post-Inuyasha, Sakura Mamiya from Rinne was actually her first departure from her usual hot-headed bitchy tsundere self-inserts.>>289845445>I don't see the term used nearly as often in other threads I've been in...Because Rumiko is the only female mangaka who shamelessly self-inserts to absurd degrees, everyone knows her self-insert shilling is the worst in the industry.
>>289866578>Because it appears Rumiko has calmed down some in her old age post-Inuyasha, Sakura Mamiya from Rinne was actually her first departure from her usual hot-headed bitchy tsundere self-insertsMaybe. Or maybe your use of that label is inconsistent to begin with and has more to do with your grievances against the author than with the characters’ intrinsic characteristics or the archetypes they reference. Anything is possible, I guess
>>289848299Good point, Nanoka.
