They took a book and butchered it into something vaguely similar that uses the same names and they didn't even have the courtesy to give it a decent plot. The only difference is that movie Howl's at least has enough whimsy and fantastical imagery to pull the audience along the mangled, weak version of the story, while Earthsea is just dull on top of being mangled and flimsy.The real salt in the wound is that if you go read Wizard of Earthsea, you realize that they barely needed to change anything. The book fucking reads like a manuscript for a Ghibli movie. It's almost uncanny how easily you can envision every single scene in Ghibli movie form. Adapting it should've been the easiest thing they've ever done, but instead they made some Frankenstein amalgam of multiple books throughout the series and fucked it.

>>289838555I don't think it would've made much difference. He wouldn't have made it more accurate to the books because he's never had respect for source material in any of his adaptations. The plot isn't too far off from his usual MO, so I don't think he would've made a great improvement there. So I think all he could've taught Goro was to inject more whimsy to keep the kids entertained and trick the adults into ignoring the weak storytelling.
>>289838971You get the rights to adapt a book series, but you realize that you'll probably only get to make one movie because the executives don't want to take too big of a risk and budget out a bunch of sequels ahead of time. So you're forced to decide between adapting the first story (and miss out on all the good moments and characters in later books) or trying to make some kind of condensed version of the series that hits all the things you want. A lot of directors opt for the latter possibly out of hubris or possibly disinterest in the source material (i.e. you don't want to get roped into making a bunch of sequels, so you deliberately try to make it one and done). Naturally, it becomes a mess because you're trying to simultaneously make a coherent movie while also making a highlight reel of an entire series.

>>289838555Miyazaki DID spend a ton of time teaching/training the next gen of animators and directors though. They either went on to continue their careers, or passed away like Kondo RIP. Goro does get a bad rap though, for an agriculture/greenspace guy to pivot into film directing, he did a decent job. Earthsea and Poppy Hill are comfortable and enjoyable watches. Earwig is admittedly hard to defend.
