IDK if the al-Ghazali anon in every thread is here, but to that other guy in the previous thread asking about him, the reason people blame al-Ghazali for torpedoing the Islamic science and philosophy is because contrary to modern day Islam, a lot of these famous Muslim figures in the Islamic Golden Age believed that the Quran was created and were even distrustful of hadiths. They were influenced a lot by Neoplatonism and expected that educated elites would recognize the Quran as largely allegorical and instead try to understand God by studying the natural world. The Abbasids even had an inquisition which enforced this. And this is ignoring some borderline deists. Al-Ghazali was a very influential figure who thought this version of Islam was bullshit. Christians also criticized Neoplatonism so it's not like al-Ghazali was unique in this, but the point is that he criticized philosophy and science and his influence significantly lowered academic freedom. This coincided with the Muslim world going through a period of crisis (fracturing of states, invasion by Mongols and Crusaders) which contributed to the reemergence of what we would describe now as mainstream Islam.
