People forget that his animosity toward Rudeus came partly from the fact that he frequently didn't accept payment for his work. Taking low-level jobs away from other adventurers who actually need them compared to the shit that Rudeus can't accomplish is one thing, but setting a precedent that he can do those jobs without taking payment in exchange for potential information on his mother only worsens the matter. Couple the fact that he was effectively taking food off of other adventurers' tables by doing work that was way beneath him for pennies on the dollar with the fact that he was incredibly fake and condescendingly formal, and it's no surprise that Soldat had a real issue with him. That being said, he took it too far and expressed it in entirely the wrong way, so Rudeus isn't wrong for wailing on him either. So they both kinda sucked, but they were likewise both kinda justified. Good character writing.
