Why are newer shonen so afraid to have side characters that don't have any powers? People wouldn't mind side characters being "useless" as much if they were just normal people doing what they can instead of having their own unique powers but still not being allowed to do anything.Instead, we end up with characters with cool and interesting powers being more useless than Sakura from Naruto.
>>289859478They would still be useless.
>>289859706nta, but they would have reasons to be useless.
>>289859706A useless character that actually has a reason to be useless is better than one that should be useful, but is held back by the plot
>>289859948People to this day cry "why didn't Tatsuki and Keigo get powers" though
>>289859867>>289859948A powerless girlfriend being kidnapped all the time is annoying even if she can't help it. An annoying story role is still annoying in the end.
>>289859478>Why are newer shonen so afraid to have side characters that don't have any powers?Because that would be boring.
>>289860810/a/ keeps collecting new schizos.
>>289861045It's even more boring when the character has the power to be useful but isn't
>>289861135It's just a new variation in ongoing template thread spam rather than a new schizo
>>289861137It's really not. At least theoretically-useful characters have a reason to be there, and provide some speculation and debate value around their powerset. Keeping a powerless character involved without being annoying takes MORE skill than writing an underpowered character being useful.
>>289861513>At least theoretically-useful characters have a reason to be there, and provide some speculation and debate value around their powersetterminal fanfiction brainIt doesn't matter how "theoretically" useful they are, if they don't do anything in the story itself, they might as well be powerlessPeople get more annoyed with useless characters that have the potential to be useful than ones that are just straight up useless
>>289859478new generation shonenspics actually think being written to win fights makes you a good character so it wouldn't matter
>>289861726If you can't win fights in a story about fights, then yes, you are by a definition a useless character, unless you have a non-combat role that helps the characters that win fights win.
>>289861578Was Sakura potentially useful or just straight-up useless? I would say she's been both at different stages of Naruto, but the point is she was fucking annoying either way. A character's reasons for being a waste of pages don't matter; the fact is they're still wasting pages. The fix is to write them useful, not give them more excuses to be useless.
>>289861835Even characters that should have been theoretically more useful than Sakura ended up being more useless then her, she at least had the niche of being a healer. A healer will always be useful unless the characters just conveniently never get injured badly enough to need healing. It's a simple role that you don't need to set up contrived scenarios to make useful.
>>289861137No it isn't. You're just autistic.
