He knows the tropes of both fairy tales and shonen battle manga, and he's very deliberately leaning into all of that. But, that doesn't necessarily mean his characters are bland or bad, just that he's not really doing much to try to subvert your expectations. Sometimes, he really manages to take those kinds of things and employ them in really effective ways.
