The idea for the death comes before the logical conclusion that would lead to that death.Fire Punch works because no one knew his formula yet. Chainsaw Man 2 fails because he doesn't know what to do with any of the remaining characters and starts by tripping over his own feet. Then he remembers the wrong message and proceeds to kill everyone in a desperate attempt to give Denji agency while depicting 'everything spinning wildly out of control!!'Fujimoto is the diet Todd Phillips. Just a stream of somewhat experimental writing until the author lost interest and then resolved the clusterfuck of escalation with a reset with a twist (world without CSM).Part 1 had similar problems, but the last arc managed to pull it together in a clever way and any plot threads left open, you could imagine will be taken care of in a sequel. Now that it becomes apparent that there wasn't some overarching vision to pull it together once again, it hurts part 1 as well. It's kinda like the Star Wars sequel trilogy. When it turns out that the mystery box bullshit from ep7 wasn't resolved in a good way in the followups, it retroactively made ep7 even worse than it already was.

The one point where he showed growth, was, as stated in that interview blurb, when he came to terms that Makima was never interested in him personally, but even that went ultimately out of the window with part 2. Maybe part 2 could have ended on a better note, even with the reset ending, if it was Denji who had the will and agency to make the call. There's still be plenty wring with part 2, but at least it wold have felt more satisfactory, if that interview is real and that's what Fujimoto wanted to convey.
