Alright lets try this! One chapter everyday until we die.
>The Social Welfare agency, a government sponsored corporation is in the business for saving orphaned or abandoned children who are terminally ill or injured beyond the point of saving.
>Using cybernetic implants, the Agency uses a process called 'conditioning' to turn orphaned children into emotionless killing machines with hardly any memories, no human comfort and no free will.
>Follow the life of Henrietta, a girl who barely survived a brutal attack that killed her family and who was saved and repaired by the Social Welfare Agency. Despite her conditioning and programming, Henrietta still has the heart of a young girl. She has not completely forgotten how to love, yet the very emotion is contrary to her training and programming. Can the Gunslinger Girl survive?

It might have worked in this case. Her goal was to get her father out of prison, but it ended up he gets killed in prison under suspicious circumstances before he could be exonerated. Not an uncommon story though. After the Croce incident, a lot of people with right-wing sympathies got purged from Italian public service. That's probably what Franca's father got caught up in. In fact, a good chunk of the SWA staffers experienced something similar, but their loyalty to the Republic and contempt for Padania's methods are what brought them to the Agency.

>>
>>290022825
That kick turned it from four dead agents, one dead cyborg into one dead agent, one injured. Cold comfort for the dead guy and the poor bastard who got peppered though. That's what makes it such a great scene though, to emphasize the brutality and human cost to the fight. Last chapter two. Shades with the glass eye, and Irma who can never have kids on account of the shrapnel in her gut, it's a great way to remind us that Franco and Franca are not the good guys, no matter how human or relatable they seem.
>>
>>290026473
I think her perception skills are quite good, she seems to be the first to notice when something's wrong.
Like back when the shooting happened at the protest, Henrietta seemed to be the first one to notice something was wrong.
>>
>>290026925
Eh I still find them more likable compared to the corrupt politicians. I mean the glowies are still killing innocents and committing crimes under government request and they aren't afraid of stating it in the open.
>>
>>290027652
true, presumably that would be down to her training or the drugs then since the cybernetics seem to purely be skeletomuscular
>>
>>290029093
Since Jose asked to have the least amount of drugs pumped into her, I think either she specializes on reaction time or is genetically like that. Afaik he tries to avoid the drug as much as possible from chapter 1 or 2
>>
>>290022825

>>290028564
Yet it's the corrupt politicians and glowies that are replacing the limbs of children that the idealistic bomb makers like Franca and Franco blow off. Franco and Franca being relatable is the point, as it's up to the reader to realize that even the most upstanding Padania can't square their ideals with their actions. It's why Nino got out.

That's also not to say that Franca is some tragic Quixotic villain. In the first chapter she shows up, she makes it pretty plain that the people she cares most about protecting are people who match up with her view of wealthy, well bred ethnic Italians. Would she have said the same thing if she bumped into Triela instead of Henrietta?

>>290065484
It's a series that ended well over a decade ago that got two seasons five years apart from two different studios with two different approaches to the source material. The books are long out of physical print in both Japanese and English, and while digital sales are always nice, Kadokawa would probably rather put their resources into better performing IPs. Short of some director with pull putting their foot down and insisting on remaking and readapting the entire series, it's just not in the cards. Hell, if Aida still even wants to do another anime, he'd probably rather it be done for his current manga (probably also not gonna happen since it's a painstakingly researched Meiji era period piece).

And honestly, I'm okay with that. The manga succeeds in what it sets out to do, and it doesn't need an anime to justify or elevate it. Plus, if I had to hear and see in HD full color animation Angelica in her last moments of lucidity apologizing to her childhood dog for forgetting him, it might break me.

>>290067381
It is a downgrade production-wise from the first season, but they do such a good job of faithfully bringing the Pinocchio arc into animation, I don't even mind. The OVA episodes are also pretty peak. Wish we got more of those.
>>
>>290062820
>>290052940
I suspect Hilshire is the real jobber. He is a desk jockey turned investigator, whereas Jean was a gendarme. The latter puts his charge in ideal tactical situations and usually does not lose situational awareness like >>290048768.
>>
>>290065484
The only recent thing that happened with this manga is a collab with a chinese mobile game 5 years ago, which was probably the most optimistic 'official' fanfic it got where the plot involves the self insert protag finding digital reconstructions of the girls in an abandoned, dying SWA server, and after experiencing their stories (retelling some arcs of the manga), allows these backups to be transferred into his base's server to 'live' on in peace.
>>
>>290069801
That sounds incredibly retarded. Did the girls frontline devs think the gunslinger girls were robots? Or do they have lots of crossovers involving upload-your-brain technology? That doesn't fit with this manga at all.
And even if you make a "digital reconstruction" (AI chatbot) based off a person, the actual person is still dead as a doornail so what's the point?
>>
>>290070301
Girls Frontline is a post WWIII setting in the 2060s, you can't really explain having the actual girls from the 90s there without timetravel shenanigans, which actually does exist in-universe along with brain uploading. The most optimistic part is that at least someone today remembers the SWA cyborgs and the shit they went through rather than them being forgotten forever when the server finally goes, as the girls' memories live on in their backups. That's why it's merely optimistic since it's not an attempt to retcon the fates of the cyborgs for some belated happy ending.
Also, Gunslinger Girls is one of their biggest inspirations and they also collab with stuff like Jashin-chan and Zombieland Saga.

>>
What does this manga have that modern manga lack? It feels like a genuinely good story
>>
>>290075451
Dang that was a wild ride, all that setup payed off so so much. I feel like this author is the only ones who draws kids fighting adults right, even when other authors want to do a fight where the kid just loses it doesn't hit the same as it does here when the kids is a super strength cyborg.
>>
>>290084607
Right? This author actually paid attention to the setting and the children's weight and the effect weapons and drugs would have on them
Most unrealistic thing so far seems how well Pinocchio kept up with the cyborgs but barely.
>>
>>290084864
Pinocchio has a range advantage and he has the benefit of experience. I was a bit worried he'd grow dull from his 4 months on the farm. But he actually won almost every exchange of blows, it's just that getting 3 hits in for every one hit he takes isn't enough in this case.

Thanks OP. My recommendation to everyone following along for the first time is to now watch the first two seasons and the OVA episodes. The OVAs will get covered by the next two chapters, but there's a reveal at chapter 29 that the anime does way better. You have two days anontachi. Don't disappoint yourself.

>>290082510
Il Teatrino is way better after you read the manga and treat is as a companion piece rather than a stand-alone. The biggest problem it faced besides production downgrades is that it had to retcon the hackjob Madhouse did to the end of their cour, meaning that watching from S1 to S2 could be confusing and missing important plot details that the first season recontextualized for its own tidy plot button-up.

Eh, she fights for the same reasons as Pino: filial piety, camaraderie and pride. Stuff like ideology is humbug in comparison.

A medieval squire that received his knight's old sword would feel the same slight to their honour.

Pinocchio in Gunslinger Girl much like his literary counterpart becomes a real boy through sacrifice for his father. All the while demonstrating the agency that the girls lack.

Chapter 28 "Dum Spiro, Spero"
>>
>>
>>
>>
So are the left wingers the bad guys?
>>
>>
>>
Gotta admire his dedication
So basically the brother thinks Jean just hid and is trying to ignore Sophia's murder, while Jean is being a glowie and covertly killing every terrorist he can find because of his personal vendetta, right?
>>
Rico is the perfect tool. No emotions, just pure loyalty and killing instinct. And as another anon mentioned before, doesn't complicate things with feelings, romance or the art
>>
>>
Badass Rico! This time her height is working against her and she still manages the jump
>>
Who is the best handler out of them all? Jean seems quite competent while Jose keeps fumbling it by distracting Henrietta instead of honing her skills or teaching her gun safety (which almost caused her to kill herself on accident).
>>
>>
Damn

Didn't expect it of Jean. Then again its a double digits expensive cyborg assassin

They all have their unique strengths. Marco is the best combatant, Hilshire cares the most, Jean is the most mission driven and Giuseppe spoils his cyborg the most.
>>
>>290093385
Pinocchio, Cristiano, Franco and Franca are still listed in the "cast of characters" section. They're all alive and well. HAPPY ENDING.
>>
>>
>>290094100
>Giuseppe spoils his cyborg the most.
That's gonna get him killed someday. Also funny since he's quite similar to Hilshire but one ends up being more effective than the other. I wonder if the roles were reversed, Giuseppe getting Triela and Hillshire training Henrietta, how much would change.
I mean its clear Triela is a natural ace in most things, so Giuseppe having a naturally talented cyborg that doesn't look like his sister would be interesting.
And wonder if Hillshire would be harder on Henrietta to make her more competent.
>>
I like these moments of quiet stoicism and contemplation.
I think its lost in modern media with loud crying characters, Deku being the most blatant example.

It's hard to pick apart the people from the roles they play and the circumstances they find themselves in. Does Triela take a leadership role because she's the oldest of the girls or because it's in her nature? Hilshire has a scene like Jean's here >>290093778 in a later volume where he orders Triela to take the fleeing targets alive. Is that because he doesn't hate Padania as much, because he doesn't want to see even criminals hurt by nature, or is it because he hated the sight of Triela walking up to him with tears in her eyes, heavily injured and on pain medication to tell him she killed someone just like he ordered her to? Jose chose Henrietta because she looked like his sister, Hilshire choose Triela because of their shared past, who knows how things are if you take away the things that shape us.

Jean is the biggest hypocrite in the series, and that includes the villains. You'll see a bit why next chapter.

She is so capable and cute

Why does Jean glow so much compared to the other Section 2 handlers? This much glow goes beyond revenge.

I don't know why I'm alive at this point someone please choke the life out of me.
>>
>>290101493
Nope. It's all revenge, all the way down. Jean's vendetta is just that deeply rooted, there's nothing he's more certain of. He's entirely internally justified that every single Padania shitstain deserves a violent and bloody death, and that he will deliver as many of them as possible. Glowies tend to be certain in their belief that what they do protects the country, and the more certain they are, the more they glow.

no they are glowie that use little cyborg girls to do the government dirty works

The government doesn't pay well enough to keep guys like that on their payroll. True Glowies are always true believers.
>>
>>290104892
For real? I wouldn't know
>>
>>290104905
I've seen it a few times from a few different glowies from different countries, but the one that stuck with me the most was a companion documentary that came out around when Zero Dark Thirty released. Some CIA analysts were among those being interviewed, and that certainty of everything they were doing in pursuit of Bin Laden, torture, collateral murder, whatever, was fully justified in their eyes.

The main goal of Padania is to federate the modern Italian republic into five semi-autonomous republics under a centralized government, primarily due to wealthy Italians in the more developed and industrialized north of the country not wanting to pay taxes for the poorer south.

This is based on an actual political movement spearheaded by the political party Lega Nord, just, you know, without the rampant terrorism. They've mostly moved past their secessionism they pushed for in the 90's, which the Padania of GSG is borrowing heavily from, and more recently gone all in on Euroscepticism and anti-immigrant platforms.
