I saw a clip of the first episode of Ao no Hako and Chinatsu said "inomata-kun" but the subs said "taiki" even though that was like the first time they spoke with each other and they barely even knew each other.
Not to even mention that it's a romance anime where it's a plot point in their relationship when the topic of calling each other by their first names rolls around

I'm so fucking happy i don't have to watch anime with fucking translation/localization bullshit

The joke is such localization was mostly done by fansubers especially the cartel fansub like herkz and his commie.
They try to appeal the localizator company so hard in hope they get invited to their secret club and can go legit translating anime, so they tryhard harder than any localizator company itself with their own release.

Sometimes these shows have target audiences of single digit age children. And translators often have bosses that don't know shit about the language and go "this is for kids get that foreign stuff out of here". It's actually why dubs are becoming more accurate to the manga/original script in some cases because they have more moving parts so more people can go "no it was like this originally and we want to keep it that way"
>>

the same way you differentiate between honorifics because it's literally the same aspect of the language

Typically whenever lolicon is used in anime, it's (kinda ironically) not referring to drawings, so the pedophile translation is correct.
>>
This was brought up in the last retarded sub ragebait thread made and posted in by people who don't actually watch anime, but the whole honorific argument falls apart once you start bringing in pronouns, since those are objectively more important than honorifics 90% of the time and are never carried over in translation.

>>290087008
It's untranslatable. By translating you lose -con interplay. ***le lumps ugly shota together which is elsewhere in the -con series. The pure tone and nuance is removed because one word is from America and the other isn't. Just wrong.
>>
>>290087383
>By translating you lose -con interplay.
Not really.
Siscon just means sister complex. It has some interplay, but all of this is downflow from Freud.

Really this seems like an autistic and meaningless hangup.

>>290081697
Honestly all loanwords should be banned from every language, it's always retarded and unnecessary.

ect ect? Genuinely curious. I actually think that just using the world Senpai a unique enough word that not translating it is fine but what is the line where a translation does not need to translate the world?
>>
>>290093988
The spic dub of Kakegurui leaves senpai untranslated, so it seems that non-retarded localisers understand that it's an understood word among modern weebs.
>>

>Subtitles say “Hey, isn’t that Junpei Tanaka?”

It’s such a little thing, but I still hate it
>>
>>290070466
This is a more accurate translation 9 times out of 10 because their loanwords just end up being their own thing. Or end up using outdated terminology zoomers wouldn't recognize like "SNS" in place of social media.

Yeah there are shit translations, but this phenomenon isn't one of them.
>>
>>290093988
If you're shipping to a non-weeb audience, it's context sensitive to the scene. If you're shipping to a weeb audience, just say senpai.
>>
>>290087961
I worked in sales and the worst part of it was everyone using English loan words to sound more professional and capable but their pronunciation was so shit they just sounded like retarded hicks fellating their own farts, which is what they were, of course.
>>
>>290093988
It depends on a whole bunch of things. Do I want to leave some Japanese terminology in for flavour? What's the context of the scene, is it formal or informal? *sniff* i tako dalje
>>
>>290087961
I mean I don't see the problem with calling the study of matter Chemistry, which is in and of itself an ancient loanword. Like I don't see the problem.

It's unnecessary when you already have an equivalent, which is the case with most of Japanese loanwords.
>>
>>290093988
As an honorific (e.g., "Mihama-Senpai")? Leave it as senpai. As in the concept of a senpai (e.g., "watashi no senpai", "senpaitachi")? Translate it as senior or upperclassman.
>>
>>290071004
Well, how else would you translate "Nii Nii"
>>
>>290070380
It can help characterize the relationships. Like if she uses "onii-sama" then "localizing" that to just his name loses that.
>>290071851
Most trannylators refuse to just have "mama" or "papa" translate to those terms. They will use "mom" or "dad" instead.
>>
>>290093988
Upperclassman is better than saying the name of the character, but the word senpai is already specific enough to not need a translation imo.
>>
>>290093988
I wouldn't translate it, and that goes for other untranslatable concepts as well.

Sometimes it's the job of the viewer to go out of their way to find the meaning of words they don't understand because not everything will have an equivalent. A lot of people forget their watching foreign media and it's healthy for people to realize that not everything should be understood immediately.
>>
>>290095892
Senpai is 100% translatable. It's just clunky and doesn't match how English works.
>>
>>290093988
Senpai is recognizable enough that a decent degree of normalfags get it.
Maybe it's because the manga I'm translating is based on a subculture where it's used a lot which makes it a nightmare to work out but I am absolutely nettled that がんばれ hasn't entered zeitgeist the same way.
>>
>>290095892
>>290095984
I think both of these are important point. Like as a native english speaker if some book uses an english word that you don't know, you just look it up and you expand your vocabulary. Should be the same for anime and seeing the term "senpai"

And also if the supposed purpose of localization is to make things more familiar to the non-native audience, then using a weird literal translation like "my dearest esteemed big brother" or "upperclassman/senior" is failing that check and you might as well just fall back using "onii-sama" or "senpai"
>>
>>290095984
How would you translate it then?
>>
>>290093988
Left as is. It's a Japanese anime character with inherent Japanese sensibilities about seniority, using only the character name is simply bad.
>>
>>290094538
Leave it as it is. Fuck casuals.
>>
>>290096208

>>
>>290070380
just watch it without subs if you care so much, no sub can ever be 100% accurate because its impossible to fully translate japanese into english without either localizing or just not translating some of it, hence it not being a full translation (which is not intuitive for non-weebs, hence why they try to localize)
if you don't like this then just learn japanese and you won't have to care
>>
>>290096758

>>
>>290083673

>>
>>290073356

It's recognizable through cultural osmosis because of the lasting impact of the fansub era when subbers still left untranslatable words like that intact and added a TL note or two for explanation (same with "onii-chan", "chuunibyou", "siscon", etc.). Had fansubbers followed modern translation practices back then, it's doubtful that any normalfags would recognize "senpai" today.

There is a lot of more recent Japanese slang that never got registered into weeb, much less normalfag vocabulary because of modern translation practices. For example, where is the autistic rage against 陰キャ being translated as "introvert"? I'm not seeing it, not on /a/ at least. Even though it's a uniquely Japanese concept with no direct translation in English just like "chuunibyou", and translating it in any way other than leaving it as is is just as stupid as translating "chuunibyou" into "delusional", "daydreamer", "middle school syndrome", etc.
