Finally caught up with this. To be honest, I think it's funny that Maurice, while obviously being intended as a mirror to Ciel, actually just seems like a better version of him. He has the exact same flaws - manipulator, asshole, leaves everything to others - but does so without an omnipotent demon at his beck and call. I think this best encapsulates why I don't care about Ciel in particular. I don't like Maurice either, but at least I can respect the hustle.

If any of his victims had more backbone or any of his underlings had more ambition, he'd have been taken down before Ciel ever arrived.
