The latter would the only type of series worth looking into. They usually prefer historical series over the shitty west though, Golden Kamuy, the Shouwa Rakugo anime, even Orb were barely relevant in the west and very Japan related series like NGWK or World is Dancing and samurai series in general anyway. Same with mecha that isn't Gundamn and all semi-realistic military shit. So in the end Japan still wins even if they sometimes rate some weird shit the highest or fawn over that toddler ninja show. I don't even know what the west likes. I almost never see western posts about anime anywhere on twitter and I am not using any other socmedia.

What's even more surprising is that I enjoy the current Chinese cartoon, which ironically looks and feels more like FLCL than any of the so-called FLCL sequels/spin-offs.
