The audience knows Frieren is going to have to deal with this shit but she doesn't know how and the closer she gets maybe the more cracks will start to break. You didn't need to have a big plot in your post big plot adventure. Hell I can see them coming home just to see their Dwarf friend pass on and decide they have time for one more journey on their own. But that's just me off the cuff.

From the clone fight in the Ladybirth, we see that Frieren has magic that surpasses conventional magic, i.e. magic of the Goddess. Frieren learning all the wacky and niche magic throughout the world is what will make her so. The encrypted scriptures of the Goddess that the Church use for Holy Magic are magic that she's passed down, as once she becomes a god she will transcend time. When Sein is being led by the Goddess, who is he led to? Frieren. The Goddess sends him to the right place and time to save Stark and mess up the Shadow Warrior's plans. The whole arc is the Goddess (aka Frieren) manipulating events to prevent Serie's fated death.

Then indecisively flip-flopped on it and got stuck in a corner. You know it's true. The magewankery is unstoppable.
