Character development and progression is important, but this smithering little faggot never evolved into anything worth a shit.

I like Shinji's character but it's true he barely changes.
Both of his copycats got more development, despite starting out as even more pathetic
>>
Shinji degrades as a person throughout the story.
He acts quite a bit like a boyish hero on multiple occasions, somewhat manly even, but then he breaks more and more until he ends up on that god damn chair he's known for.

all the men who took that little fag as role model during childhood end up trooning out in adulthood

The final nail in the coffin.

Denji developed backwards. He started off the series as a better and more thoughtful person than he ended up as

I mean, can you really blame him? He suffers trauma after trauma, losing people he cares about while he faces inscrutable foes that want to kill him in a myriad of ways. He needed counseling, and he only got that after Instrumentality started.
>>
Yeah but how much of his degradation was on design? I remember a seele member saying that the destruction of eva-1 pilot's ego will lead to instrumentality. Did Gendo and seele work together to fuck up shinji mentally for their plans?

Yeah, they were in bed plotting how to mindrape him while Anno was plotting to mindrape his audience along with the idea of how Shinji will meet with his introduction to mental collapse.

>Gen alphas are unable to comprehend the actual concept of character development
Well, color me surprised.
>>
Sometimes I feel like Gainax made Gurren Lagann as an apology for Eva. Simon basically does everything we wanted Shinji to do in terms of changing as a character.

we?

And in the end everyone clapped.

Shinji did grow, he just didn't grow enough to win in the end.

Simon and all the shinji clones made after eva also didn't have the world actively conspiring against them, specifically, and had people who truly cared for them every step of the way and were able to show it. I feel like that's a big difference. Hell SRW knew better than to leave the poor boy to stew alone.

But I don't think the heroic archetype of the long suffering but persevering young man would have made eva the story those kinds of critics wanted. I mean Asuka was just that, and she had just as many problems

Exactly what I thought.

Did you guys watched Evangelion with both eyes and ears closed? Shinji had development, he was getting better, getting friends, liking his new life and then... everything fucked up and he got worse than in the beginning.
And still, he accepted himself and the word around him, even if it is far away of perfect.

Anno had depression and had to therapy and meds and you can see thins in his work. Getting better from depression isn't a straight line, like in most anime/manga. It is a path with MANY downs and (some) ups.
