To write the same character interaction again and again makes it sound like it's something that actually happened to the author. Writers write what they know, after all.I have to imagine Horikoshi was in love in high school and they separated for college and he keeps writing that same story of couples fucking off for years for no reason as a way of coping with his broken heart. The reality is Japan is a tiny-ass island and everyone has access to high-speed Internet and lightning-fast trains, so there's no reason for lovers to actually drift apart like that.
