If I have one (incredibly minor) complaint about the anime, it's that they rounded out Namari a little too much. She's actually a bit slim for a dwarf. It's cute.

I'm still confused by this, because there definitely seems to be some dedicated form of resurrection magic, and I believe we still see spells before and after that are specifically like
>they're close enough, let's cast revive and hope it works
instead of
>time to cast heal and see if I can stitch them back together enough for the soul to re-enter

But he's also a Gnome, so maybe that gives him a different POV on the matter

It's just how they talk about it, unlike Tansu in his exposition they're not trying to be specific about

There is none, Tance is right. People just call it revival magic to avoid confusion on their intentions I guess.
It's one part perfectly legal healing magic, one part ancient magic no death allowed curse. Marcille does something different than healing magic but it was still just about making Falin's body whole again so her soul can inhabit it.

No, it can show up in any dungeon with a dungeon lord that has a similar desire to stop death

It's not the healing magic that fails it's the soul trap. It just wants to keep you in the dungeon not necessarily in your body.

If the body gets too damaged, or people take too long to heal it, or possibly low odds it just doesn't tether you to your corpse properly you stay stuck in the dungeon as a ghost.

That's because almost all the characters in dung meshit have zero sex appeal. They are all hideous in one way or another. I can get slightly aroused when I look at Hien, but the face just ruins it. I'm spitballing but I think probably that under normal circumstances there could be necromancy magic that ends up with zombies and such, but the Dungeon's soulbind does 90% of the work required for a proper resurrection and means just regular healing magic will get the job done, without you needing to do anything extra to draw and bind a soul that may or may not even belong to that body.

>Kakakaka and Kikikiki
This seems to a reference to the strategy in JRPG's of recruiting party members, taking their starting equipment, and dismissing them. Recruitment often being done at taverns.
Kakakaka and Kikikiki are the Japanese equivalent of AAAAA and BBBBB as names. The names of party members like that tend to be low effort for obvious reasons. They're disposable.

Maybe it's actually three parts. Like the actual "resurrection" spell isn't the healing required to prepare the body or the dungeon curse that pulls them instead, but something that inscribes on the body's essence that it's in its "healthy' and intended form.

That's something that would more reasonably exist as a magic that would be studied and known even without a dungeon that has an immortality curse. Something that healers might use to assist in transplants of limbs, or dispelling phantom pain. Override what the soul thinks the body should be so that it accepts what it is.

That would also explain why there's a harder chance to revive the body if too much of it is gone or has to be reconstituted. The soul would see the body as missing if too much is gone, or they're prone to seeing reconstituted parts as instead being too much the amalgam of mana and flesh that it's made from.

This then fits in well later with late going-ons with Falin, as so much of it is just properly asserting what's part of her body and such, more than actually "healing" it at all
>>
>>290206255
The way the blurb is phrased makes it sound like they were given the names then abandoned.
So the Flokes didn't name them Kaka and Kiki.

>>290206168
Deepest lore
>>
>>290198482
This is explained later on. The resurrection magic they've been casting so far has just been upcasted healing magic. Because the dungeon doesn't let anyone die, so they're really just souls stuck in bodies that can no longer sustain life as we know it.
Namari later explains to Kiki and Kaka not to be so careless with death just because they can be revived, because if the body is too damaged, the soul actually can break away from it and the upcasted healing magic won't work anymore.
Falin's body was too damaged for healing magic, so Marcille had to use proper necromancy to revive her. Which also resulted in bringing the dragon's soul back into the equation.
That said, most people don't know about that, so calling it "revival magic" is just for simplicity's sake.
>>
>>290199218

I'd say it still makes sense since Melini's dungeon is the only (known) dungeon in the world right now that's properly active. The only other one that hasn't fully collpased/potentially has a still living DM has still been magically sealed by the canaries.

Tansu and many other scholars/politicians are interested in Melini's dungeon because the canaries haven't swooped in to shut it all down and seal the entrances yet, so its a treasure trove of information about ancient magics and secret old runes and such.

Honestly I disliked how casual she was being in these chapters as it was, both laughing at Marcille + nagging Laios like this.

I get that she had to leave for the sake of her debts, but given the fact that she did like Falin (enough to check in for her at the resurrection centre, at least) and saw Laios and Chil as friends enough to hang out with them after work hours, she's still too chipper around them when she really SHOULD be feeling a bit more guilty/sympathetic, especially since she up and left at the start without even apologising or offering her sympathies to Laios.
>>

it's honestly just not the smoothest implementation. I feel like she was originally going to be just a throwaway design, but Kui decided to salvage her, even if the result was a little clumsy.
Shuro was likely much more thought out in comparison before the manga began, since he had the connection to Izutsumi. Although, I feel cat is easily the weakest of the primary cast once we get our full party. Her entire character feels stuck through the whole comic.

I know what you mean. She's my favorite character but there's very little going on in terms of development. It feels like Kui had some bigger plans for her but at some point had to scrap them and just gave her a very rushed "I want to kill the person who made me into a catgirl! Wait, nevermind no I don't" conclusion at the end. I don't think we needed some huge drama surrounding her, but at the same time a rushed character arc feels worse than none at all.
>>
>>290211421
Izutsumi feels authentically like a new playing joining a TTRPG party. Which is thematically appropriate, but I don't think it works in the format of a scripted story.
>>
>>290211421
>>290214681
She definitely doesn't show that much development but at the same time her character didn't really need it in the first place. Her character is more or less fine the way it is. Not being a people's person is not a bad thing and her character fits a cat's so well that accepting her fate isn't that far fetched either. So to me it's fine that she only slightly shifts towards more of an appreciation for the people around her and acceptance.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to not want to go on a suicide mission for free. I don't know why this is so hard for people to accept. Laios went because it's his sister. Marcille went because she has a close relationship with Falin. Chilchuck went because he actually cares a lot about his party even if he pretends not to. Senshi tagged along because he's an exceptionally good person.

Still surprises me that people react so poorly to eating monsters. It's one thing to snub it at the higher levels, but after a certain point, you'd think it'd only be expected.

And the usual issue of like, the implications thereof don't really apply here, since she knows they aren't criminals. Just weird to see it compared to like, the equivalent of people finding it disgusting or degrading to eat cat food in an apocalyptic setting.
>>
>>290222285

>>290222324
You don’t know where that food has been. Some species you shouldn’t even put onto your skin let alone in your mouth no matter how you cook it.
>>
>>290222324
I think it's just a niche survivalist thing. A lot of the information Laios gets prior (that isn't from Senshi) comes from that little book, so it has enough of an audience to warrant printing. I think Laios is seen as weird because he's enthusiastic about it rather than treating it as a last resort. To borrow your analogy, people would eat cat food in an apocalyptic setting, but they probably wouldn't be terribly thrilled about it and it wouldn't be their first choice either. Nobody would be saying "Oh boy! Cat food!" unless they were on the brink of starvation.
>>
>>290222324
I assume it's like eating insects, a strong cultural association with monsters that separates them from other food sources that the characters would be intimate with but the reader isn't privy to outside of seeing reactions. They know people do eat them but it's an outsider tradition and such. Reminds of during the lewis and clark expeditions where everyone ate dogs to survive except for clark because the idea of eating a dog was so foul to him, could had a dungeon meshi side story equivalent to that. an in world historical example of the cultural perception of eating monsters or something.

Considering his backstory it might just be him trying to fit in with the others, he was just a child when he got stuck in the dungeon, probably all he really knows about elves is what he heard from his initial party and the occasional elf he encounters after the dungeon opened up. Yeah but can a tall man really handle the one minute of a dwarf? The powerful strikes of a dwarf... Like a waterfall with logs falling, can a mere tall man withstand that one minute of a dwarf? A dwarf is the same weight as a tall man yet they're significantly shorter, the uninitiated might say that the dwarf is a fatty, but they're wrong. The dwarf is "stout", after all would you put the foundation of a dungeon on top? Think of all the mass someone of that stature would have, and how much force that person would be designed from birth to within stand... The dwarf is... strong... In that 1 minute the dwarf would unleash all of stamina, 60 seconds seems like a short amount of time but in the ring with a dwarf they would seem to last forever...

Super simple stuff
>>

1. Finesse their way past the rest of floor 4
2. Find the Red Dragon on floor 5
3. Kill the Red Dragon
3.5. Eat the Red Dragon
4. Drag Falins undigested corpse back up 3-4 levels and find someone that can rez her.
5. Group Hug
>>
>>290226001
The dragon should be asleep right now so theoretically it should have still been feasible. They had no way of knowing that the magician was falling apart and ordered the dragon to act strangely
>>
>>290226001
Well, ideally the dragon should be asleep and have a very slow digestion as a result. I guess their idea was to kill it and tote Falins body parts up a level where they'd most likely find someone who could resurrect her. If her body were in better condition it wouldn't really matter if the flesh was a bit rotted.
>>
>>290221797
Probably not, dwarves are much stronger than tallmen. If Laios could dally around or something until she tires herself out then maybe, but otherwise he's got no real chance.
>>
>>290222413
Translation mistake I think. Japanese doesn't specify subject usually so it probably functionally said "It's a family heirloom. Used to be a shield, but turned it into a pot." and to make it better structured in English the translator had to take a guess at whether his family did it, or he personally did it, without knowing anything else about his backstory.
>>
>>290221992
Chilchuck probably negotiated a longterm union contract where he was paid in advance for multiple runs or a time period. While Namari was just on a per-dive "we divide the spoils we return with" type of agreement that was more volatile for both sides.
>>
>>290221992
> Laios is a poor negotiator
Not really, if anything the 'you get paid after the dungeon trip is over' approach is the norm (which kind of makes sense since they often don't know what the profit will be at the start). Chilchuck is the weird one for demanding payment in advance, and it's presumably cost him a few jobs where people don't want to risk losing money on a dungeon excursion that doesn't pay out as well as they'd hoped. But he's got good enough skills/experience that he still gets steady work anyways.

Also, Namari left before even knowing they were going back into the dungeon. She knew that Laios and Co lost basically all their stuff in the dungeon along with their main healer, and probably assumed they would've just had to give up. Even if they had invited her, Laios lost his bank token, they had no money for more supplies, and were down 2 members, one of whom was extremely vital to their ability to progress. But if it goes from 'a dangerous mission that would pay out well' vs 'the same dangerous mission with fewer people and fewer supplies.', its not surprising that Namari would cut her losses and look for other work. Especially considering how desperate her financial circumstances are.
>>
>>290222888
I think its even worse than eating insects, more like eating mushrooms or random plants when you have no idea about them.

People just kind of assume that if you eat monsters, you'll get sick and die, no matter what it is. They're almost never treated in the same vein as regular animals or plants, and when they are, its usually by very niche communities who are considered freaks by everyone else.
>>

>>
>>290226950
True, though I found it a bit weird that Kabru apparently didn't know about him or his presumably really good rep on the surface given how he was looking around for people to help clear the dungeon. I guess maybe he assumed he was too money focused, but it's not as though Mickbell is any more pure hearted about money either.

I assume Chilchuck was already associated with the siblins when Kabru was looking for a party and since he thought Laios and Falin were secretly evil and that anyone working with them and stayed was morally compromised. Kabru's attitude that's going to appear in the next couple chapters is just an odd quark of the first part of the story before he becomes an elf man servant.
Also Mickbell came with dog man and dog man is man's best friend.

>>290227167
Maybe Laois already as a reputation as a bad leader, but then why would half the party join if that was the case. I think the best answer to that is that party wipe, or near party wipe where they lose all their supplies and funds is a legitimate reason for immediate termination of contract. As opposed to leaving these lovely gnomes and their kids where she'd just leave without any circumstances that would have prevented her from making a living with reasonable risk. As for Chilchuck staying he already got paid but that does wonder how much he got paid to the point he's like "Yeah let's go eat monsters and kill a dragon with half the party left" I know he's being a tsundere, but the exact amount of his inital deposit does make an interesting question
I's not like they completely lost the money but just the token the banks give out to withdraw their money like a card. They can get it replaced but who wants to work for a guy who says "I promise I'll pay you next week" when you have debt collectors on your back.

I've always found the explanation somewhat incoherent, but I guess ditching an incompetent party after a wipe and joining a different respectable one is publicly considered perfectly reasonable. But cancelling your thus far successful endeavors with a new employer because your shitty old one has now managed to scrounge up more money again makes you seem outright unreliable or not interested in any other details of teamwork besides the money.
>>
>>290227167
> She abandoned Laios' party
By the publics POV, if they know about the incident at all yet (its only been like, less than a week at this point, and its not like they told anyone what they were planning), I assume the consensus would just be that Laios's team had a pretty catastrophic failure and broke apart. Their team lost their healer and all their stuff, so Namari and Shuro leaving rather than going on essentially a death march to go 'rescue' Falin (which, without Laios's knowledge of dragon digestion, would seem like an impossible task) would seem completely reasonable.

Kinda goes that way with most adventurers, they're co-workers, not friends, and won't do dangerous work just because you asked.

Yes, IRL humans are called 'tallmen' in (most) of this setting, while "human" is used as a general term for tallmen, dwarves, elves, half-foots, gnomes, and ogres. (except in the eastern archipelago, since due to their cultural isolation + lack of other races, tallmen just call themselves 'human' and every other race is non-human to them)

General distinction between human and intelligent demi-human (orcs and kobolds) is the number of bones, as all the 'human' races have the same amount of bones, while kobolds and orcs have more or less respectively.
>>
>>290227335
yeah. They're tallmen because they're the tallest human race, not counting ogres who are nearly extinct anyway.

>>
>loses the supplies, the sister, the gear, the money, and the dragon battle
>somehow Namari is in the right for quitting because she didn’t get paid
>she isn’t allowed to rejoin the rescue mission because “what would other adventurers think?”
This will never make sense just say she didn’t like Falin or something rather than making up convoluted reasons for why she’s not sticking around. There’s already a rumor about the group having a falling out and turning feral by choosing to eat monsters it’s not like that’s going to suddenly go away.
>>
>>290229757
Eh, that doesn't necessarily excuse why she wouldn't re-join the group when they met up again. The money/rep stuff is reasonable enough as an excuse to why she left and why she stays away.

Though given how they characterize her later as liking Falin, Laios, and Chilchuck enough to hang out with them after work hours, it IS a bit weird regardless that she didn't even stick around long enough for Laios to regain consciousness and offer her condolences.

She only lost the food supplies in that list, they lost their gear/money due to the fight/teleportation spell, lost time due to a mess-up with the map, and the fight loss was everyone doing poorly.

> Namari is in the right for quitting because she didn’t get paid
She left because the team fucked up horribly against the dragon and, by all normal standards, would not be able to mount another excursion any time soon due to a lack of members + money.

And she doesn't re-join because quitting a mission halfway to rejoin her old squad just makes her look wishy washy, especially when the old squad is currently seen as incompetent weirdos.
>>

>>290229896
Losing the food was a big one. They weren’t fighting at 100% because of her and it cost them everything and Falin. Worst of all she refuses to take responsibility for her huge part in that failure. Does that make her seem trustworthy and competent? It’s not anything to brag about that’s for sure.
>>
>>290230069
Given the lack of context you could just as easily dump the blame on Chilchuck (because it was a trap Namari fell into that he presumably should've identified) or Laios (for getting them lost with the map and running into the trap to begin with)
>>
>>290229988

It's a completely profit driven and occasionally criminal enterprise. Chil reps almost every single halfling on the island in a labor union who would likely have similar (but less lucrative) deals to ensure they don't get treated like trap fodder and can eat. There's no way he's the only adult who gets how things get done.

The real professionals would be well organized and have better contracts than "uh work for free and you'll get a cut what we find, so good chance of getting 25% of jack shit and in the event you get eaten by a monster for a permadeath your next of kin get nothing". The conmen, salesmen, and corpse retrievers milk the rubes.
>>
>>290230234
Namari had one job. The party could have still held together if she didn’t fail spectacularly at it. The story paints it all on Laios for not providing her funding and preventing her leaving but there’s no undoing what she failed to do that started all that. An army doesn’t fight on it’s stomach and she basically fell short of her responsibility to keep her party fed. Laios doesn’t blame her but I will and others rightfully should have done so too.
>>
>>290230314
My point is that you could blame Chil and especially Laios just as much as you could blame Namari in this instance. Even after Namari lost the food and they got lost for who knows how long, Laios had the opportunity to turn them around but chose to fight the dragon while they were all tired and hungry anyway. He could very well lay blame on Namari and it wouldn't be totally unfounded, but he'd have to lay equal blame on himself because he saw the shape they were in and decided to confront the danger anyway so they'd make a profit.
>>
>>290230352
I think she probably pushed the party to fight the dragon somehow. If dragon killing was her specialty she sure as hell didn’t prove it that time.

I'm not even Namari's number 1 fan or anything but it's pretty clear a lot of you guys have some weird irrational hatred for her.
>>
>>290232673
>irrational
No it's plenty rational. She lost the food, which was explicitly the reason why they were defeated by the dragon. And then unlike the not!japan guy who left to rescue Falin more quickly, she just left without thinking anything of it. And then the story tries to present her as being in the right.
>>
So how does mana work in this setting? It seems like it regenerates normally if you use up some of it, but if you use up everything it takes a long time to regenerate it back. And apparently you need to store it in your staff or something? Since Marcille didn't even know how much mana she had without touching it.
>>
>>290220566
Cool gramps
>>
>>290232760
Mana isn't stored in the staff, she was just using it to see how much she had, kinda like a thermometer.

This is baseless conjecture. It would make WAY more sense if Laios pushed the team to confront the Dragon, cause he wanted to see one in action.

Probably, though these separate races all having the same amount of bones also does a decent job linking them together biologically, and also kinda foreshadows the whole "humans came from one combined ancient races that only started splintering when the demon appeared and everyone started making wishes to change themselves/their people" thing.

It's not like she was really bragging, she just confirms she's killed dragons before when Marcille asks.

Plus not all dragons are equal, a red dragon is on a whole other level compared to other, smaller dragons like wyverns.

The bit about humans being weaker but shit stamina was a weird balancing flex.
But I guess that's gamey fantasy for you.
>>
>>290241756
Also the vast majority of practical strength is just being able to move your own mass around. There's nothing much more you can do to hold something down than lay all your mass on it. Super strength would matter for things like grip, not that.
>>
>>290241756
Dwarves having such unlimited stamina was always the weird thing when it comes to fantasy races.
That type of stocky body isn't good at preserving stamina.
>>
>>290220809
Poor Namari, she first wrote her as a bitch, then tried to retcon but the feels it gives are still a clusterfuck. Hard to hate because she cute, but still can't read it as her being a nice person.
The sudden chumminess and surrogate family thing with Tansus and the thing with the temple above ground just make it all worse because it's so much at odds with the stuff she did before.

I didn’t realize it took an IQ above 90 to read a simple sword and sorcery manga. Everyone knows the loyalty money buys and who is bought by it.

Carlo Ponzi didn’t scam Greeks or Irish. He scammed his fellow Italian immigrants. they trusted him because he was one of them. Beware those that use familiarity to build confidence between the two of you.

The lesson is you shouldn’t automatically expect one form of loyalty to be more automatic than the other. Not everyone shares such sentimentality as our lovely hinny here.

That could happen to everyone. The real issue is and always was that she turned her back on people in need in a really cold-hearted manner. Not just strangers (something like ignoring a beggar on the street) but somebody who she knows well. How would you feel if you were in a car crash and your buddy who was luckily not hurt just walked away from the site without trying to give first aid?

It's pretty obvious if you connect the dots. Neither Namari nor Shuro were initially planned to return as sympathetic characters.
>>
I do think how casually she interacts with the party is off putting, I understand her running off for the reasons of she's in debt and needs money yesterday. Making her more shy and evasive might have helped her portrayal, she can still be reasonable talkable with the weapons (without being so confrontational, show she's annoyed but you don't need to have her mouth off Laios so hard) but like have Marcille ask "why do you care now" and that just ends the conversation.
IDK, I mean Namari is a significantly less important character compared to Shuro so maybe Kui had 2nd thoughts on how the character worked out.

>>
>>290233484
We know Tallmen breed with Elves, Halflings and Oni so we know they're close enough (though we know Half-Elves don't breed true). It's likely possible still with gnomes/dwarves or just those among each other. Good enough sign that they're at the very least racially adjacent. If a Tallman can't breed it, it's probably not humanoid enough to be called human in this setting.
>>
>>290230425

>>290242998
Fun game, but the romances suck for wish fulfillment. Though big NTRing the fuck outta Regongar until he ceases living and creamping bad twin's pussy and having her switch to good twin is delightfully devilish. Bad for vanilla though. And they don't let you romance the halflings in either games, so you know they're little hypocrite fucks.

So I only use mercenaries and imagine my own party dynamics. Owlcat writers so shit they made me work out my brain to get what I want.
