I think I realize why Nicolas was retconned back to life, and it's because Liu isn't going to be allowed satisfying revenge on the worm we know. Leaving Shen out of the equation, does anyone expect Yan to get punished? At best Liu could've been allowed to kill Fu Zhan (and they make up some backstory that he was Naidan's direct superior who gave the order- fuck this could still happen). But reviving Nicolas and making him a Worm associate is probably the extent of what we'll see in Liu's bug-squishing quest, which sucks but I suppose it's better than nothing.
