When you watch Eva you can go "oh, this is taken from this or that film or tv show". In other words, it's Anno reacting to his lifetime of sci-fi watching, and channeling that. To use a more academic sounding phrase, Eva is in "conversation" with media that takes place after it. Often entire scenes or sequences are lifted wholesale from past media. Rebuilds are never in conversation with anything BUT Evangelion making the entire thing closed and self-referential. There is nothing deeper than making a new Eva film series to revitalize the merch empire, and to make money from the box office by making Eva again but with random differences. What the hell does Mari amount to? Nothing. It's pointless, like the whole thing is pointless. Rebuilds are an IQ test. If you took them seriously, you failed the IQ test.

So being sick of 20 years of Asuka vs. Rei, he just went "Shinji should marry my wife, since that's who I would marry". Does it make sense in-universe? Nah. But it's meta, and it's different, so ti's the rebuilds.Original is often a rom-com about Shinji and Asuka opening up to each other, and they literally end up as the last two people on earth.
