I'm pretty sure the main reason it got so much shit was since it fucked over the Hana shippers me included.
The extra ending chapter later that was just the guys leaving for the wet T-shirt competition was just rubbing salt on the wound.

Though I remember hearing that the mangaka was getting tired of all the shippers so I guess he fucked them over on purpose.

The reason it was hated is because the author wrote the ending out of spite after getting axed. Chiyo realizing Kiyoshi is a degenerate piece of shit and hating men is not an impossible route, but setting that up in just 2 chapters is unreasonable.

The second escape was amazing, bro.
If you're referring about the sports festival arc, I'll give you that it had some serious pacing issues (mostly the pointless Chairman adventure and the overly long cavalry fight) but it still had plenty of amazing moments:
>Futon mini-arc (part of the sports festival, mind you).
>Kiyoshi's definite heel turn during his chat with Gakuto.
>Hana/Risa race (it also included foreshadowing of the series ending)
>Kiyoshi & Meiko's respective deaths and resurrections.
>Joe trolling Risa.
>Kate spreading terror among her opponents by using facts and logic.
>Duel of doms.
>PBR-sama's sacrifice and Gakuto's redemption.
