I started watching this show, and 6 episodes in, I'm still waiting for the actual story to start. I get the setup, Tanya is incredibly talented and incredibly arrogant. She dominates the battlefield without too much forethought. It means that, at some point, she must commit a critical mistake that would put her in a truly hellish situation, at which point the real story can begin. But they keep kicking this can down the road. Basically nothing happens episode after episode. Tanya engages in air combat shenanigans, with the author vaguely gesturing at Manfred von Richthofen, wins, and we move on to the next episode. This is World War I. At least give her a character she actually gives a shit about, and then melt their face off with a chemical weapon.
The author seems to have the same attitude towards war as Kouta Hirano, except that Hellsing was a flamboyant murderhobo comedy, and not something you're actually supposed to take seriously. Hopefully something cool happens soon, or I'm gonna be disappointed.

Apart from being the opposite gender, Tanya is otherwise the character from the Who's song "Behind Blue Eyes". You could have Tanya sing it to Vishya and it would fit.

Episode 7. Once again, nothing is lost; no one on Tanya's side is even scratched; no damage; no stakes; nothing happens. I was thinking "oh, maybe this dude will finally do something, maybe kill one of her nameless faceless mobs at least", but no, he did literally nothing. And I mean *literally* nothing - he stood there, flew a bit, made a shocked face, and died. Even God, who's supposed to be a vengeful asshole, now helps Tanya, as if she needs any help.
It's frustrating. The fuck was the point of making a story about a war, and baiting me into watching it, if you're not gonna bother writing a war? This could've been one of those "I've been reborn as a loli in a generic fantasy setting, and now I gotta grind my levels until the audience falls asleep" isekais with no major changes other than the aesthetic. I feel like I got baited.

I mean, she literally is.
She's kinda funny-looking in some frames, but the only other female character in the story looks like a literal toad, so I would consider Tanya ugly-cute. Her expressions are actually pretty nice - she doesn't look scary or intimidating, but more so "unpleasant", which fits her really well, considering how other characters see her.

But again, she looks fine most of the time? The only unusual part is how her lips are always detailed, but her Russian fuckbuddy has the same thing going on, so that's clearly not unique to Tanya. Tanya only looks weird when she does her funny faces, but the faces are there for a reason - it's to make her look more interesting. And it works; her expressiveness is pretty much the only thing carrying the show for me so far, because nothing else interesting has happened so far.
>The non-fanservicy LN illustrations that don't offend are obviously fine.
In one of them, she's doing a stripper pose with a rifle, with the uniform hugging her body like it's one size too small for her. That definitely counts as fanservice to me.

To me, the story is more about an autistic Reddit atheist meeting God, and finding out that God is as much of an asshole as he is.
It doesn't really read like pure comedy because Tanya is the only outlandish character in the story, everyone else seems pretty serious.
>>
>>290286732
..... Alice?
>>
>>290302104
Tanya might be an autistic classical libertarian but she is not really atheistic, if anything she doesn't care for gods in general.

Japan and the Salaryman is a polytheistic region of the world so they mostly adhere to the belief that there exists many types of gods. What she denies however is that Being X is the Abrahamic god (God) or that such a god exists in the world because injustice exists.
>>
>>290301804
I don't think she's stupid enough to side with Hitler. In this situation, she didn't really have a choice, being too young to move elsewhere, and Germany in WW1 was doing reasonably well (until the US came in), as opposed to WW2, which was more of an exercise in suicidal nationalism from the beginning.
>>
>>290302340
Tanya rejects God as a concept pretty openly though, which is why he basically responds with "Bet, you little shit".
The joke is pretty much about how Japanese salarymen are all soulless husks who wouldn't look out of place in wartime Germany, so let's put one in there and watch him squirm.

>>
>>290303243
Yes, the Salaryman rejects that the singular God (capital G), the Supreme Being, exists in this world because injustice exist. This says nothing about belief against lesser gods. He is surprised because the being before her can defy universal laws, which as far as he knows only two beings are capable of, God or the Devil. This is a dualist position stemming usually from either Zoroastranism or more commonly Gnosticism that is regularly used in Japanese media. From this position he rejects that God (the good supreme being/the divine) exists in this world and Being X must be the devil (the evil supreme being/the adversary/ahriman/demiurge/yaldobath). Going on from Gnosticism we could easily interpret the Salarymans meaning to be that Being X is the Demiurge who has created this world of injustice.

The salaryman is just surprised that the Devil was actually real, but he doesnt particularly care for any of it. He does not really reject that gods can exist, only that the Singular God that is Good does. The Devil here would be classified as a classical god. If anything the Salaryman is Apatheistic not Atheistic.
>>
>>290304380
I don't think the story itself takes it all that seriously. This God is definitely not Abrahamic, because he says he does reincarnations, which don't exist in Abrahamic religions, they're a Buddhist thing. However, the funny part is simply his personality - this God is clearly vain and vengeful, which resembles the Old Testament God, but again, that God didn't do reincarnations, so you could say it's just an amalgamation of different religions that the author came up with for this story specifically.
Tanya's position, on the other hand, is to disrespect him as much as possible out of sheer spite. So it's a tale of two bull-headed idiots trying to prove each other wrong, except one of them is a supreme being.
>>
>>290304521
Yeah, the story itself is a slice of life comedy/parody of the laments of an overworked worker in a black company (set in ww1/2 as a reincarnated loli salaryman) which can really be seen when reading the WN. Chapters are entries in the little girls battle diary (youjo senki). Being X is just a plot device to get the story started. But if we're going to be fair to the work of the author we need to interpeet the nuanced detail he puts into the work which is why I reject Tanya being atheistic. The Salaryman is a highly functional set of dysfunctional so of course he doesnt follow the classical boring route of reddit atheism. The nuance and rationalizations of the monologues and dialogues is one of the things that makes the LN such a fun read.

I haven't looked into the author, but I imagine he had experience with black companies. Tanya's salaryman life is a pretty clear reference to the cutthroat pencil pushers who fucked the Japanese economy silly in the 90s and 2000s due to sheer greed and lack of civic ethics. They poke fun at it in the university episode, where one guy answers the problem by appealing to morality and gets shut down, followed by Tanya's hierarchybrain response getting a good grade.
The whole thing is a condemnation of the sociopathic rules that developed in the Japanese office culture, the author saying that these people are more fit for literal war than normal economic development.
>>
I feel like this series would've been more interesting if it had more female characters. Slaughtering faceless men is easy for the audience to stomach. Show them the torture of young girls instead. That's what Gundam did really well, it portrayed the tragedy of war from a civilian perspective using female characters the audience could get attached to, and then slaughtering them senselessly. That's why something like Victory Gundam is so damn difficult to stomach for people. War narrative becomes effective when the audience actually cares for those who die, especially if their deaths are unfair and senseless. Tomino mastered that, but here, the author feels almost afraid of going the distance.

Finished the first season.
I realized that I looked at the show from the wrong perspective. It's not a military drama, it's a pure isekai power fantasy. Tanya is omnipotent and indestructible; her opponents are all faceless mobs; their high command is inept; Tanya's high command is slightly less inept but still one evolutionary step below her. From this perspective, it makes far more sense.
The author dropped the WW1 theme at this point, with modern tanks, jet engines, etc. That's a shame, I was hoping he had more interest in it.
The obvious problem here is the characters. With no one to root against or for, the show is held up entirely by Tanya taking over the world one army at a time, but it would eventually get repetitive. All power fantasies run out of steam fairly quickly because of it, and I dunno if another season of this same thing is gonna work for me.
Still a fun watch though. Explosions, allusions to real war movies, the sound design is really nice, and the premise, while ultimately not used much, is funny.
Gonna check out the movie.

That's because she succeeded in s1, and got promoted. The reward for being promoted in the military is you can sit at a desk and do less dangerous shit. The higher your rank, the further your desk is from the bombs and the shooting. That's sort of been her entire goal.
>>
>>290310459
>The author dropped the WW1 theme at this point, with modern tanks, jet engines, etc.
So, in your mind, WW1 is simply a lack of tanks and jet engines? Shows your interest in the period is so shallow it can hardly even be called an interest.
>>
>>290310495
Modern tanks and jet engines alter the battlefield so much that WW1 combat stops making sense. Trench warfare is hardly possible when they're one step away from building an F-86 and thus skipping the entire era of WW2 fighter planes, and using Panzer IIIs against undefended infantry in an empty field is like beating a toddler with a baseball bat.
>>
>>290298962
The good ending.
>>
>>290310459
It's an absurdist comedy written by a japanese /k/omrade. The anime compared to the LN is more action/dramatized so the power and combat aspect is more emphasized. One aspect that the author really wanted to show is that heroes (classical anime protags) has no place in modern war. Even a hero that can win battles against the odds recurrently, still can't turn around a strategic defeat in a modern war. Otherwise the author is mostly just having fun exploring a military setting per his hobby and figuring out what kind of fun shit he can pull while being mostly rational/realistic although magic exists. This can be seen more later in the novels with the Zettour+Tanya dynamic
>>
>>290310977
I wouldn't call Tanya a hero, though. While she's obviously not evil like the title suggests, she's still selfish, sadistic, and sociopathic. I hope this story shows her becoming a better leader down the line. I feel like the only way she could actually defeat God is by proving him wrong somehow, and that would require character development.

She's outwardly and publicly lauded as a hero in the Empire. She's more of a classical hero though. For a modern morally upright (good) hero you have Mary Sue, if you put an overpowered dumb shounen protagonist in a modern war that would be how it would work out.
She originally just wanted to get out of the field commander position which is why she is a harsh leader but when receiving the Salamander Kampfgruppe and the Empire running out of personnel Tanya learns the importance and joy teaching (improving her human capital), this can be seen slightly in this season episode 1 but it is done better in the LN. Originally she wants to weed out incompetence by elimination but the military being what it is, in the name of necessity taking whatever human resources it can get it's hands on, any company will have it's share of incompetence, but many times you can mitigate it by seeing them as specialists instead is what her insight is in the LN where the anime is at.

Tanya is an intelligent rationalist and will twist any and all things into her models of the world. She mostly becomes better by developing these models. In the LN she is a great leader and Weiss for examples begs her for the 203rd to be a part of her Kampfgruppe when he hears she will be promoted to lead one. The anime skipped it but she was genuinely distraught in the Queen of Anjou battles where she lost a company 4 of whom were KIA but her rationality thinly veiled it as a loss of valuable human capital. The anime is also skipping a lot of fights here where she can be seen as leading from the front in order to prevent losses or doing dangerous deep recon that Weiss begs for him to do instead.

I'll note two more things, when she's leading from the front or doing dangerous things she's almost always using the T97 which all of 203rd is using so she is great per superior skill but if needed she has the T95 as a backup so she can rationalize doing dangerous things. Her superior mage skills can also be seen in her first battle in Norden where she downs three-four mages from a company where she essentially has recon gear, a shit orb and no gun.

Second is you can almost view her character as Tanya as an extremely rational/intelligent tsundere and her character makes sense according to the LN. It's genuinely fun to watch her bonding with Zettour in the later volumes and then the strain their black company is under in their strict adherence to the rationality of following Mother Necessity. If any faith is to be found it is under her guidance.

Novel, anime, and manga are pretty different, but in the manga, we've seen adult Tanya. In the Novel she escaped to MERIA, seems to be ageless, is still beefing with X, and hangs out with Grantz's grandkids

She’s not a libertarian
For all she talks about war being horrible, she’s clearly drawn to it. She smiles like a maniac in combat. The signal theory only goes so far, she could have gotten the desk job if she wanted to. At least she could intentionally injure herself. In fact she didn’t really need to join at all. Only one we see close to her age is Mary, and she volunteered. If she wanted to avoid it that badly emigrating would be a far easier route to pursue, but she doesn’t even try. Casual disregard for human life.
And the military talent . Not only that, but Salamanders is clearly inspired by blitzkrieg tactics. Either she’s next level genius, or, more likely, very well read on war in previous life.
And look at s2e2 (admittedly didn’t have time to watch further). Her reaction when in turns out not!soviets are fighting out pf patriotic motive isn’t “damn statists” it’s “oh fuck we’re dealing with nationalists”.
She’s a proto-chud

You're not wholly wrong but:
>She’s not a libertarian
Tanya explicitly self-identifies as a peace and freedom loving libertarian that is deep in the chicago school of economics, pic rel from the LN. I think Carlo also mentions it in an afterword in the WN.
>For all she talks about war being horrible, she’s clearly drawn to it.
Correct, as mentioned you can picture her to be a tsundere and it makes sense. She gets combat high both from the thrill of the action and outmaneuvering she does but also from doping spells/combat stims.
>Only one we see close to her age is Mary, and she volunteered.
The Empire is close to reaching the point of recruiting all available human mages in the country to sustain the war effort, as Tanya predicted from history.
>If she wanted to avoid it that badly emigrating would be a far easier route to pursue, but she doesn’t even try.
She is an Orphan without any capital/resources, it would be a pretty hard thing to accomplish and she would have to go pretty far to get to a region that will not be swallowed by the war. As for desertion it requires opportunities that is hard to come by, it is explicitly mentioned in the LN and the last thread talked more about it.
>And the military talent.
I mentioned her superior mage skills, that would mechanical & creative use of her skills to achieve favorable outcomes. You can imagine for example a pro-level gamer vs merely good ones or noobs.
>Not only that, but Salamanders is clearly inspired by blitzkrieg tactics. Either she’s next level genius, or, more likely, very well read on war in previous life.
Yes, I don't think the anime really covers it but the Salaryman was a "nerd" in reality. He was almost at the top of his grades in his schooling and elite university. Further he was a military history enthusiast or at least enjoyed playing both FPS games and war strategy games. Tanyas musings in the LN goes over a lot of random military history or trivia.
>>

Do you know what a metaphor is?
That Anon is straight up saying what happened in the manga, we only get a few pages. But people theorize that Being X will not let Tanya die because she refuses to have faith, and he cannot accept the fact that she won't submit. So he will constantly throw the world into chaos to fuck with Tanya.

> Tanya explicitly self-identifies as a peace and freedom loving libertarian that is deep in the chicago school of economics
She’s lying to herself.
>doping spells/combat stims

> The Empire is close to reaching the point of recruiting all available human mages in the country to sustain the war effort, as Tanya predicted from history
And yet the youngest we see in Serebryakova. Normal pre-teens make shitty soldiers
>without any resources
She got the mind of a rather successful adult, she can scrap some by. Get some money working odd jobs, move to Italy and later US. Sounds like a way more workable plan than “avoid the war by becoming a frontline officer”
>hard to come by
Fly to UK back when it was neutral. She’s faster than most mages and English strait is pretty narrow
>mage skills
It’s not limited to that. She saw the naval landing coming. She writes well enough for staff to listen. The salamanders
>nerd in previous life
And a military-focused one at that. Yeah, she proclaims to be a libertarian, but she was isekaid in 2014 (I think?). Not to /pol/speeg but plenty of right wing guys watched ben shapiro at that age only to move further right later. Not saying she would have Siege as her desktop book but she doesn’t strike me as “gay married couples defending weed with ar-15” type
If a self-proclaimed socialist got isekaid to cyberpunk and the first thing he did was join Arasaka that would raise some eyebrows

>For all she talks about war being horrible, she’s clearly drawn to it
Well, if she didn't have an affinity for it, there wouldn't be a story. However, while she's good at war, she never expresses enjoyment of it. Her mental breakdown in episode 11 shows it clearly - the only time she loses composure completely is when she realizes that the war ain't ending anytime soon despite all her victories. She's not like Hellsing's Major with his "Gentlemen, I love war"; she doesn't revel in an endless bloodbath for its own sake, it's a means to an end for her, and she happens to be good at it.
>And the military talent . Not only that, but Salamanders is clearly inspired by blitzkrieg tactics. Either she’s next level genius, or, more likely, very well read on war in previous life.
The handwaved answer is that she was intelligent to begin with and spent her whole early childhood consciously training herself, reaching peak human condition like Bruce Wayne, knowing everything there is to know. The real answer is that she's an isekai protagonist who's supposed to be incredibly OP, don't think too hard about it.
>She’s a proto-chud
I think it's more so a case of the author being a chud.
>>290314518
Tanya "can't" win because God is omnipotent, yes. But this God also clearly has a sense of humor, because if he truly wanted her to suffer forever with no way out, he could've put her in Auschwitz circa 1942, or, for even more irony, turned her into a Chinese PoW of Imperial Japan. If he wanted, he could torture the submission out of her, no doubt. And yet he gives her a fighting chance, however slim. He's willing to play a game with her, meaning that he's also willing to lose to some extent. I dunno if this series has a definitive ending, but a good one would be Tanya proving to him the power of free will, and him just abandoning her to live in a world she built.

>And yet the youngest we see in Serebryakova. Normal pre-teens make shitty soldiers
Yeah, it hasn't reached that far yet but they're seeing a lot of hastily rushed newbie mages being put to use. Although it's not really shown in the anime I believe as I don't think we see a lot of other mages.
>She got the mind of a rather successful adult, she can scrap some by. Get some money working odd jobs, move to Italy and later US
It's still pretty hard to accomplish as an orphan weak little girl. I think she decides to join the army at either 6 or 8 years old and then make use of her previous skills to navigate to a comfy rear position.
>It’s not limited to that. She saw the naval landing coming.
Yes, she does have a talent for war and has further studied it's actual workings in the war college. It was also inspired by some military history she remembered.
>She writes well enough for staff to listen.
She as mentioned went to an elite university, learned amongst other things languages such as english and probably a bit of german as she has studied some law.
>And a military-focused one at that. [...]
He enjoyed anime as well. But you don't have to love war to enjoy FPS games or grand strategy games. Nothing odd about a libertarian doing so. As mentioned she does gain a taste for combat but per her rationality she wants the war to end and peace to come.

not really, they can mostly do simple tricks (example being lighting a candle). With an orb/ritual (optimizes mana usage) or a scepter (focus) they can do stronger or more advanced magic, focus allowing for casting at a distance. The Computation Orb (combined analog computation, orb and scepter) allows even more complex usage without as much skill/mental-focus/effort allowing high tier mages to fly.

>She doesn’t revel in it, but she also isn’t a peace loving hippie. She smiles like a maniac in combat and is clearly enjoying herself bombarding Moscow.
She always smiles like a maniac, because it's a fun visual to have. If she were stone-faced during combat, the battles would've gotten pretty boring.
She does have some moments of "evil", mostly with how nonchalant she is about killing civilians, which feels like a step too far. Pic related, for example, was a profoundly stupid speech for someone of Tanya's intelligence. It's circular logic - you should shell the fuckers because they might rise up one day, which would make you shell the fuckers. That train of thought turns war into an endless, suicidal, and unsustainable genocide, and those who practiced it in real life brought nothing but swift defeat and ruin to their own forces (ironically, Germany knows this better than anyone).
But I think that stems from the author simply not having a good reference point for war as a humanitarian tragedy. I imagine Japan doesn't like dwelling on WW2 too much in schools, and he's most likely a Gen X'er or a Millennial, so his generation is too removed from the subject matter, allowing military otaku like him to have a very idealized, and at times skewed, idea of war. You could contrast him with Isao Takahata, the director of Grave of the Fireflies, who lived through US air raids as a child, or even Gundam's Tomino, who wouldn't be caught dead trivializing these topics either.

>That doesn’t sound particularly peace loving
You can enjoy something while still being against it. She in facts comes to combat/strategy so much that she forgets she is in actuality an advocate for peace. It's not like she's particularly suppressing it as such or that it's subconscious, but her rationality allows her to still see and list all the reasons why war is bad and peace is preferable. She does suspects the corruption from the T95 for clouding her mind to be war crazy though when the thirst wears off or when she things a particularly stray thought.
>10 year olds make for shitty soldiers.
I believe she is around 13 years old where the anime is currently at and 15 years old by LN 14. The chance of a mage of that age being force-recruited is absolutely on the table. Mages are also known to mentally mature faster than others, combined with there being no lowest age limit for mages.
>Becoming an officer is even harder and she managed it.
All she had to do was pass an exam (ez based on her previous education) and she could go to Kreigsacademy, she acted professionally with a high intelligence and a strategic mindset so she was recommended to the officer track. She passed it with flying colors and her final exam was basically the first battle in Norden becoming a hero and gaining a title (silver wings). After that and a couple of months on the Rhine combined with T95 and becoming an Ace of aces she got recommended to War College.

That argument holds water if you’re best dodgeball player in middle school, not a borderline berserker combined with being one of the best strategic geniuses
>13 by anime time
Getting recruited by the end (not guaranteed is still safer than spending early war on the frontline
And even then, if she disliked war there are other avenues she didn’t even try exploring. Immigration, monasteries, Red Cross, trying to dodge the draft. And she didn’t have foresight to know that war would last that long.
I’m just saying if you hate war and plan to dodge it you should start with avenues other than “volunteer to serve”
>all she had to do was pass the exam

>not a borderline berserker combined with being one of the best strategic geniuses
Her being a berserker is mostly just plain wrong, compared to Weiss she is downright clear minded. S1E2 where she goes "berserk" without T95 is when she is ordered to fight against a company of mages alone and stall for 600 seconds. In LN she does doping spells/combat stims and her combat high kicks in, while the anime just shows her resolving herself to mortal combat against terrible odds. Her career is in jeopardy, if she fails she will be the only black mark in the fight where everyone else is performing excellently, wiping the entente out without a sweat. I might have called it war crazy or blood thirsty but it is more often in line with her performing so well she wants to do or achieve more while having a blast compared to say overextending as a berserker.
>Getting recruited by the end (not guaranteed [...]
She knows the history of the world wars, she can see that she is in a war crazy country and that war is about to erupt any year now and ww1 lasted 4.5 years, ww2 6 years. If it goes anything like the world wars they will throw millions into the grinder, her being a mage, that is one of the few elite military resources, almost guarantees her to be recruited, of course it depends if the war goes on long enough. She reasons instead of being thrown into the grinder as an expendable greenhorn it is best to get ahead of the curve and try to position herself in a comfy rear position such as an instructor or if she's lucky maybe a law expert or somewhere in logistics. If she gets there before all hell breaks loose and personnel shortages gets bad then she could probably become valuable enough in her rear position to not get sent to the frontlines, who in their right mind would send a little girl to the front? She is also very career minded so she wants to build up a resume of experience to get well paying work and retire comfortably.
(1/2)
>>
>>290318727
cont. (2/2)
>hate war
She hates war because it ruins the economy, the free market and mostly your personal freedoms. Tanya enjoys all the fruits that peace brings in contrast to the absolute waste that is war, both human and material waste. It is not because she say finds it evil, if anything maybe it is unjust. Most importantly she does not want to be afraid for her life which is the default state in a world at peace.
>manage to get respect of men under her command, inherently hard task for a child
Zettour sprung the mage battalion on her, she never expected to hold command. She did however learn the art of command and discipline in the Kriegsacademy. As for the battalion if you have the title of Ace of aces and employ a harsh drill officer persona, with disobedience either leading to dismissal or the firing squad I don't find it to unexpected that they respect the little monster.
>she had no foresight that she would be a progidy in combat
She never really expected to be sent to serve in the front as I mentioned in (1/2), expecting/wanting to serve in the rear. For example, she had no clue really when the war would break out, but the tensions were visible for all to see in people/protests and newspapers. After enlisting as a mage she did however take her mage training extremely seriously just in case, and no less because it allowed her, a weak say 8 year old girl, to actually regain some of her strength/power of being an adult man. For example doing long distance marching carrying I believe 50kg of gear.
>>
>>290318727
>Do you consider MacArthur to be evil? Or Truman? She’s very much a soldier fighting for a flawed regime (all of the participants are).
They were products of their time, as opposed to Tanya, who is a product of our time. When the nukes were first dropped on Japan, very few people actually knew what the consequences would look like. I wouldn't say even Truman grasped the situation, he would've only seen the testing results spelled out in dry numbers. So when the photos started coming in, as well as the later reports of radiation poisoning, which was something even the scientists working on the nuke didn't expect, it was a massive shock to the entire world. That was the general trend with WW2 - we only figured out how fucked everything was once Europe was turned to ash and the survivors had time to plug in the numbers. Was there a better way? Of course there was, but what's done is done, and now it's our job to learn from the mistakes and try not to repeat them.
So, in this world, if not!Germany got their hands on an atomic bomb and decided to use it on a city, it would be a similar situation - an apotheosis of war and a tragedy that we only grasped fully once the dust settled. But if Tanya specifically chose to drop the bomb with no repercussions - that's a different story, because she knows exactly what she would be doing; she has full hindsight.
>>
>>290319768
>But if Tanya specifically chose to drop the bomb with no repercussions
I'd believe she'd do it "without issue" if ordered to. If she had the power to choose I still believe she'd to it for the world to really learn to fear war.

Look how she fights. While berserker is a bit over an overstatement, she definitely has one hell of a combat rush
>LN
Anime tanya is different
>almost guaranteed to be recruited
World war 1, as you mentioned, lasted 4,5 years, she would be too young, and Germany wasn’t going full volksturm then. Ww2 maybe, but a year in the end when she can surrender is better than several years if she’s recruited early on.
>having a blast
Yeah, that’s not typical for a normal person, let alone a peace loving pacifist. I’ve read people that do enjoy it, but those are radicals that volunteered in Russo-Ukrainian war
>ruins the economy, free market and personal freedom
Odd thing for her to care about considering her disregard for human life
>afraid for her life
So she joins the military, which is significantly riskier than civilian life, even in a middle of a war
>she never expected to hold command
So her plan was to be a frontline fighter? She entered a military academy, it’s graduates are *expected* to fight. Especially since you pointed out mages are an elite resource and wasting one on office work is doubtful
To summarise this slightly disjointed section, either
>mages are a highly valuable resource, she would have been consxripted anyway
Or
>she could easily get backline position with none or next to none combat experience
>take extremely seriously
I can train extremely seriously to be a grandmaster but there is no chance that it’ll work. If my was “train to be a grandmaster and if you lose a high stake game you get shot” I’d look long and hard for another option
Also sonce ln is brought up, I believe being X showed her a vision of how that girl’s life would have turned out-she’d dodge the war and immigrated to America
And again-we don’t see tanya attempting another strategy, we don’t see her defecting when she easily could have, intentionally getting an injury that would put her out of frontline duty.
>>
>>290319768
MacArthur wanted to use nukes after he’d seen their results. And I was thinking more of regular strategic bombing.
>product of their time
Did really that much change in fifty years?
Consider Zelensky, or Putin, or Netanyahu, or Trump, or Khomeini, or their generals. All of them either ordered direct strikes on civilians or strikes that would result in civilian deaths. Are all of them evil? If so, from which calendar date does someone who orders bombardment of civilian targets goes from product of their time to evil murderer?
War is rarely a gentlemanly affair (I’d argue it used to be MORE civil in the past), so in that case full on pacifism is much more logical consistant. Which is stupid. We killed each other since Cain the monkey bashed in another’s brain and will kill in the foreseeable future

>she would be too young
She still had no clue when the war was going to start, it just happened to be at the time of her exam(?) from the Kriegsacademy.
>intentionally getting an injury that would put her out of frontline duty.
She is literally riddled with bullets in her limbs in her first fight, "barely" clinging onto life. By advanced technological magical healing they can repair most injuries "short of death". Tanyas hands would be in tatters/shredded from her testing the T95 and it's subsequent cascading failures/explosions. It's inconsistent though as for example Tatiyanen or whatever he is called gets an honorable discharge to an instructor position after his stomach is destroyed by food poisoning. It is mostly portrayed as her being too damn useful to relegate to the rear.
>Odd thing for her to care about considering her disregard for human life
If you mean the personal freedom part it is mostly her own freedom she is worried about. She does find the waste of human life abhorrent as well but more in the intellectual sense of waste of human capital (market agents and potential) vs moral value of the inherent value of human beings.
>So her plan was to be a frontline fighter?
No, she was hoping for position before a war broke out, if not then preferably a rear position or a do nothing position (say a skirmish brakes out in the west or north, maybe they send her to a do nothing position in the east where relations are pretty good?). Again, who in their right mind would send a little girl to war/the front, wouldn't she be worse than useless? In fact downright bad for morale
>riskier than civilian life
a poor orphan in a nation at war? where she after multiple years of malnutrition will be sent as a greenhorn with next to zero training to the grinder?

Coffee is quite significant for Germany.

In WW1, shortages of coffee lead to all kinds of substitutes, the most German of them all being made from roasted acorns, which was later repeated in WW2.
When Germany was split in East and West, they both had coffee again, but only for a time. As Brazil, one of the largest producers of coffee in the world, experienced bad harvests in 1976, East Germany fell victim to an enduring coffee shortage. This was somewhat alleviated by the East German government trading lots of military equipment to third world nations in return for their coffee production, but it wasn't really enough.

East Germans still wanted coffee, and they didn't care much for the now especially dubious products like "Kaffee-Mix" (wow, a whole 51% real coffee, and it might destroy my coffee brewer!), thus real coffee became the No.1 requested item for West Germans to send as gifts across the iron curtain to supply relatives and friends there.
In spite of the hopes of the East German government, western packages wasn't enough to help meet East German demand for coffee, and the popular kind of baked goods which East Germans sent to West Germany as thanks for the coffee (Stollen), took its own toll on the economy, as East Germany didn't have strong and widespread access to raisins, almonds, succade, etc.

By 1978 Brazil's coffee production recovered and global coffee prices went down again, but East Germany's situation did not improve. This lead to a treaty between East Germany and Vietnam in 1980, where former provided the latter with all kinds of agricultural equipment and infrastructure in return for half of all coffee production for 20 years.
Cultivating coffee takes time, and Vietnam had their first harvest in 1990, whereas East Germany ceased to be a state in 1989. Vietnam greatly benefitted from the treaty though, becoming a global scale producer of coffee in time.

I think she would have an issue with it. In one of the later episodes in season 1, she drops a line mentioning that "her hands are still pure", meaning she only killed combatants personally, and implying that she values her integrity in that regard. I interpret it as her hanging onto the idea of "reasonable combat" as protection for her sanity. Once she truly stains herself with innocent blood, something will snap, and her mind will let go of the wheel, which would be curtains for her and a victory for God, who would end up breaking her as intended. So I can see her refusing based on that. Whether or not she would be allowed to refuse would make for a fun storyline.

>MacArthur wanted to use nukes after he’d seen their results
Yes, and he became infamous for that, which is also why he was told to kick rocks by Truman.
>Did really that much change in fifty years?
I would say yes, the fact that we're not living in real-life Fallout is evidence of that. Modern warfare is still violent and unfair, and civilians still die on all sides, but at least there's some veneer of honorability, with everybody always ready to deny any oopsie war crime that happens, while everyone else always condemns these things. This shows how humanity, violent as it is, learned from the past, and at least tries to keep itself in check.

The whole overarching theme of both WW1 and WW2 is the erasure of the individual and the rise of the statistic.
It doesn't matter how individually powerful or competent you or your country are in a modern war. It's all just economics.

>"her hands are still pure"
Fair enough. It could go either way to me. She is provably extremely resilient and can absolutely take action based on extreme rationalization. So if she were to rationalize that it is better to undeniably reveal the fact of WMD to the public to hopefully bring about a state of MAD or a (hopefully benevolent) global hegemon and maybe create a (semi-)permanent global peace she would probably do it. It would be better than to do the same song and dance a couple of decades later but with an unknown amount of WMD in the hands of greedy politicians or warmongering militaries.

>a poor orphan in a nation at war
Yes, because said orphan isn’t charging face first into magical shotgun fire.
>mobilised later
A year of fighting (with a greater chance to surrender since lines are falling apart) or six years of fighting, starting with the fucking Verdun
Again, it’s either
>mages are a rare and precious resource, if the war goes on for long enough she’d be mobilised even as a child with zero experience
Or
>they would just send her to a low-intensity front and later transfer her to backline role and let her stay there
You can’t have both. If it’s the first, she just adds several years of high intensity fighting to her war time. Guaranteed as well-no chance of dodging the draft
If it’s the second, that means even military-educated mages won’t all be sent to the front, let alone random civilians

>Then it should be enough time for her to immigrate
Sure, sounds nice in theory but how is she realistically gonna achieve this? Maybe Tanya wasn't really sure about the odds and made another decision? I'll also note that they are doing magical testing on everyone in the empire and when she learns that she has magical potential she feels/concludes that her fate is sealed, essentially deciding on the spot what to do: "It is the only path for me".
>but now with a chance to die before because entente sent a sniper
A sniper isn't usually enough to break through the combined defensive spells of a mage. But I take your point. Though she still thought the war would start later and that she in no way would be near the front. When things were going to be desperate enough to send young enough mages to the front she were planning on having been put in a valuable rear position and along with her talents being essentially invaluable there. Take Lergen for example, Rudersdorf argues that sending him in command to the western front would be like cutting of the general staffs arms and legs.
>Again, it’s either: mages are a rare and precious resource or send her to a low-intensity front and later transfer her to backline role
See above answer, and stop being an absolutist, it isn't always either black or white, it is the gray area that Tanya is used to navigating. Yes, mages are a rare and precious resource. But if you have a rear or staff officer that is invaluable in their position then their one being isn't going to make a meaningful contribution to the frontline war effort, ergo her plan for being placed and staying in the rear is valid.
>>
>>290321208
>Look, if your plan for avoiding war is “join the military” you are kinda to blame when it fails
its presented as her thinking outside the box, or several steps ahead. what is actually happening and what is spelled out in the latest episode is that tanya is unable to correctly predict the behavior of other people, she projects her rationality onto others (much like libertarians often do). yes, it is her fault.

>>290321402
I'll just follow up by saying that the army has a shitton of positions for mages that are not the front. Instructors, defending the capital, defending important industrial cities, might have marine mages, defending non-conflict borders, etc. She serves in such a position for one to a couple of years when she's young enough that the actual frontline would be unreasonable. She does well, indicates a clever mind with expertise in logistic or law and she has cleverly secured herself a valuable rearline promotion-track. See >>290321422

She fired at buildings, not people. She didn't even give the command for the artillery to fire; that was other people. She was just a scout. Obviously it's mental gymnastics, but it works for her.

>what is actually happening and what is spelled out in the latest episode is that tanya is unable to correctly predict the behavior of other people
She was actually just fucked over by sonzai x. She was first supposed to be sent away after the equipment tests failed, but the scientist guy got an instruction from sonzai x, and suddenly everything worked. Then she was supposed to retire after university, until sonzai x added her resume stamped with "deus vult" in the paperwork for the elite mage unit. And so on.

youre mostly right, but its not just sonzai x every time, and his meddling is also part of the same theme. she can't accurately predict his behavior either and she picked a fight with a, at the very least, someone much more powerful than her. sonzai x is just her biggest petard she got hoisted by

How valuable? To get to a general would require years, and if she has that much time she has enough to get the hell away from war. Lower ranking officers can be valuable, yes, but not indispensable. And if she does rise high enough she risks the chance of getting nuremberg’d
>>290321557
And if the war gets desperate enough those would be thrown to the fight as well. Plus it’s harder to advance there.
To summarise, to avoid the war she joined the military in a plan that still puts her in danger and requires everything to go right

In a country with a shit economy (one of the reasons for the war is tat the economy is in a slump) where she is a young girl with no experience to speak of. If anything she will be at the poverty line just sustaining herself if she can manage to get any job at all.
>How valuable?
Just valuable enough it would be to inconvenient or impossible to replace her. It is still weighed against being just another mage on the front, expected to die in the first real engage. She is for many years just too young to be sent to the front for anybody reasonable
>>290321812

>inconvenient or impossible to replace her
That’s a very high bar, especially for a nation in endseige. And her graduating the academy STILL implies being sent to a front, even a low intensity one. If she wasn’t a prodigy chances are she would have dies in her first engagement
>>
>>290322562
>There are still companies. Especially military, where her skills would be invaluable.
Yes, the issue is anyone treating her seriously and the law itself. Generally children under 13 were heavily prohibited by law from doing any type of serious work and for any good amount of time. This while the economy is in the shitter and might have been inflation? But sure I'm not really saying it is impossible as such but that it isn't totally unreasonable that she chose another route. Tanya still has the itch to start her career and take control over her own life. Who knows if Being X will target or make things especially difficult for her? He made her a mage so he is essentially forcing her to war, also implying as such by the end of their first conversation. She saw the walls closing in on her and decided on the spot to play the dutiful patriotic soldier, cleverly using her age as a shield to prevent going to the front.
>graduating the academy STILL implies being sent to a front
no, a regular officer only had the expectation to do military service, such as staff, instructional, administrative, or technical responsibilities. We can see Tanya for example doing technical research for the T95 after her accidental frontline service in Norden.
>If she wasn’t a prodigy chances are she would have dies in her first engagement
Strengthening the argument that they are not just sending all graduation officers, valuable limited resources, from the Kriegsacademy to the front...

I haven't reached that point yet, but I'm sure it's gonna be some flavor of "they were actually partisans" or something.
I'm more interested in what happens next, because freezing his troops to death in Russia once he got to Moscow was easily Hitler's biggest blunder, and the best example of his ineptitude as a military commander. How would they project that onto the WWI Germany portrayed in this show? I dunno, no one there seems that incompetent.

First as an assistant for accountant and moving up later-perfectly doable. It’s not that she need a career, she just needs to get out of war zone
>military service
That implies combat, if we are talking about a world war. Especially since they aren’t regular officers, they’re mages, a limited resource. Even if not right away, then certainly as it ramps up.
>not sending them
We see quite a few mages get wasted. I mean, what’s the point of using a mage for admin duties instead of a regular person. Yes, some may serve and advance into a staff role, but even those as high as major participate in direct combat. Even if she managed to become a logistical officer she won’t be so high ranking and indispensable as to not be sent to the front should situation become dire
>>290323405
Mild spoilers for the movie
she straight up fires at government buildings in moscow. Yes, they were at war (although season 2 states she escalated it into a point where backing down isn’t an option) but yes, she fires her magic artillery bullets at cbuuldings full of civilians
>>
I'm not sure what the debate about Tanya's politics are when she's almost a parody of a right-wing libertarian, firm bottom right on the political compass. She talks about muh freedoms and markets all the time, and she's not a hippie either, if the gratuitous violence didn't give it away. She has no racial biases either, believing in pure meritocracy.
Basically, she has the politics of an average pre-2016 4chan user.
>>
>>290323876
Well, that's easy for her to handwave, she would simply consider government workers to be valid targets, as she would with anyone keeping the war machine going. The line would be more like her firing straight at women and children, or burning down small villages.
>>
>>290322013
>And if the war gets desperate enough those would be thrown to the fight as well
Do you imagine they're just sending exactly everyone regardless of circumstances to the front? You need a minimum amount of personnel, even if mages, in different rear or other positions. How are they gonna train new mages? How are they going to do magical research? Magical healing? The guard for the Kaiser and his family? Defending the capital? Defending different strategic points that are not the absolute heaviest fronts? She writes an essay on the Logistics of swift warfare - Eliminating long term storage in favour of supporting continuous combat on the front lines. She writes an essay on creative interpretation of law - allows the Empire to firebomb Arene. An essay on the direction of the war - allowing the general staff a change in grand strategy to attrition warfare. An essay or I believe maybe more a field doctrine of a more temporary and flexible operations of different branches of the army, Kampfgruppen - allowing for a more flexible army and enabling Zettours and the Empires new favorite of maneuver warfare.
These are all to signal how invaluable she would be as a rear staff officer instead of a mere frontline combatant. Strategy > Tactics.
>>290323405
Andromeda failed because they couldn't get their logistics in line before they could launch their true assault on Josephgrad I believe, so I think they pretty much managed to get there but not attack it in time before the Federation reinforced it so the Empire will now just have to retreat in good order. Remember they have pretty much decimated the Federations field armies or at least their HQs in the region so the retreat should happen without larger issues.

And of course to being X the war is highly profitable so he is very happy about having this exact situation. And even if revolution and chaos in the empire happens X would also be happy.

>military service
in no way shape or form does this imply combat, you're essentially just ignoring how a modern army functions as a giant organization. And you're still ignoring the fact that her idea was to join and do her service before the war breaks out and before it gets bad enough they're finding, enlisting and sending as much as they can find. This still doesn't imply literally everybody, you still need a minimum of mages spread out doing different things.
>what’s the point of using a mage for admin duties
Yes, there is no use for a mage in magical research, no use for a mage as an instructor to other mages, no use for a mage to do healing.
It's the equivalent of saying a whole army must be exterminated to the last for a country to capitulate.

Closest analogy to mages would be ww2 pilots and they were drawn from experienced pilots
To back my point, once japan started taking losses air instructors were transferred to combat missions
>>
>>290325660
Yes so, experienced combat air instructors were transferred to combat missions. Replacing these experience combat instructors were? Fresh graduates, or those with little to no actual combat experience. It would suit Tanya perfectly and all according to her plan. After then learning that handicapping yourself by pulling away all actually experienced people isn't the smartest move by leaving all the new students to be worse greenhorns then you retain some actually useful instructors in the rear and not repeat the cycle too deeply.
>>
>>290326227
They did it out of desperation, not out of doctrine. And what are the chances she’s the one that becomes an instructor and not one of the greenhorns? Or what if she does become an instructor early only to be thrown into the meatgrinder
And lets take a look at her plan, how many things have to go right
1. The war needs to happen not too early nor too late. If it happens too early she’s better off not enlisting as it would end before she’s conscripted, if it happens too late she’d be better off immigrating
2. She needs to be good at combat. She has no foresight for how talented she’d be, if she’s bad she just dies in her first engagement
3. Don’t be near the border when the war starts. USSR basically sacrificed its entire regular army as a delaying move. If she ends up where attack is about to begin she’s fucked
4. Manage to get into a backline position-where she fails in anime, but it’s a risk she ignored. Mages are few, potential officers are common
5. If she does get into one, she needs to be indispensable enough do she’s not thrown into the frontline if things get bad. She should be fairly certain she’s good is strategic decision making, but is she good enough that she can’t be replaced by a regular one? Even as a major
6. If she does get into such position, can she avoid being associated with someone that would screw her over if germany loses? Fairly low level risk, but she managed to fail that one as well. She really should start carrying a cyanide pill around
So many things need to go just right. And at no point she attempts defection, even when clearly possible. The whole plan of “avoid was by joining the army” was extremely flawed to begin with

>They did it out of desperation, not out of doctrine.
Nazi Germany in WW2 did a total cannibalization of the Luftwaffe because of several factors, some being fuel shortages and destruction of the training facilities themselves. But yes also because of desperation.
Imperial Germany in WW1 was much more sensible with their training pipeline and did moderate cannibalization, allowing it to survive to the end of the war.
Tanya in her situation knows that there hasn't been a WW1 in this alternate world yet so she can somewhat assume her chances are not terrible. I'll repeat it again, she is too young for anyone sensible. It is because of political considerations, it being an international embarrassment and sign of desperation for the mighty Empire to field soldiers that are under double digits on the front lines. It is demoralizing to her fellow soldiers to have a useless deadweight young enough to be their daughter there. Zettour for example is an anomaly, he receives such a shock from her thesis of World War that he doesn't see her as a young girl anymore but a fellow staff officer. I'll qualify Tanyas position even more. She is first and foremost not a pacifist by any means, even going so far that she says something along the lines of any rational or civilized person should take up arms against commie aggression, herself included. Further she wants to get started on her career.
>1.
After enlisting she spends maybe 2 years at the Kriegsacademy
>2.
Her plan is to be in a valuable position, unless the Empire is going for total collapse they shouldn't send her to the front. If she is sent to the front, she at least have a proper education and whatever experience she can gain as she stalls for time.
>3.
If she can avoid any border service it is good enough, or at least stall as long as she can.

>>
Tanya should defect to the United States lol
>>
>>290328228
This war is a mix of ww1 and 2
If it’s closer to world war one she has a much easier time avoiding conscription. If it’s closer to ww2 instructor job doesn’t really help
>embarrassment of having soldiers not even in double digit age
They use her rather quickly, mages are rare enough
>commie agression
Commies only join after mainland france is defeated, she joined the army before
1. Two year grace period is still a very narrow margin
2. Valueable as in “more valuable than a mage”? Because if said mages are rare enough that conscripting girls in early teens is on the table the standard is very high
3. It’s not even border service. There even is just being in the wrong place at the wrong tine. If france was the one to pull off revolving door she’d be screwed. Staff position doesn’t mean deep rear
>strongly considers
Yes, after she burned the bridges, singing national anthem to boot
True, she’s somewhat autistic. But such adherence to the rules kinda clashes with her being a libertarian. She can claim to be one, 2014 were a different time and tea party was the face of non-establishment right. Actually tomeline matches->2014 a self proclaimed libertarian, six years pass and she’s radicalised. Yeah, that took an incredibly brutal war instead of gamergate and pepe memes but end result is the sane

>Libertarians tend not to fight for Imperial states
Libertarianism describes a set of economic ideals, not related to the military. American libertarians never had issues squaring their politics with the imperialist tendencies the American government falls into now and then.
Basically, what Tanya should be vehemently against is how the wartime economy strangles the private sector, not imperialism itself.

What happens when Japan joins the conflict, per the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, and Tanya has to fight them? Does she still know Japanese? Would she have any specific knowledge that could stop Taisho-era Japan from utterly humiliating Germany in the Pacific?
>>

the novelist specifically requested it so that lolicons would not latch onto the anime
you can actually see alternative versions of S1 teasers where there were no duck lips.
the anime is also an adaptation of the LN, not the manga.
so it's not a matter of capability; they just didn't.
unfortunately lolicons don't care and the manga art was better.

It's actually something I thought about before.
Japan is never mentioned in Youjo Senki, not even in the original web novel. Which is kinda bizarre when you think about it - this World War scenario doesn't actually involve most of the world, it's just a European conflict between Germany, France, the Soviet Union, and Britain. The war ends right when the US is about to join - Tanya realizes that it's game over, and convinces the Imperial government to surrender. There's no Italy or the Ottoman Empire, the Far East as a whole doesn't exist, Africa only exists as far as the Southern campaign, and Austria-Hungary gets merged with Germany before the story starts.
I wager that Carlo Zen didn't want the story to become "too real". It's one thing to poke fun at Stalinist Russia's schizo policies (no one other than the most terminal tankies would disagree) or WW1 France's dumb red pants (no one in general would disagree), but once you bring up, say, Imperial Japan and their little Korean-Chinese conquest, suddenly your silly wehraboo loli book becomes a minefield that you have zero hope of navigating with your ass still attached. It's the same reason why the Empire is a perfectly egalitarian society, and Visha didn't die from starvation in a labor camp for being Russian in WW2-era Germany. It's not supposed to be that serious, so certain topics are omitted on purpose.

You could consider the pacific and european theaters to be entirely different wars that really had no affect on each other. I can only really assume that in both world wars, they were intended by the axis powers as a way to distract America and Russia, forcing them both into a two-front war.

Narratively, it makes no sense to waste pages on a war the main character will never see. A frequent mistake made by amateur authors is to make the world too sprawling and too built. Wasting word salad on pointless details that don't add to the plot or sense of adventure.
Not everyone should write a Silmarillion
>>
>>290315400
It has an "ending" of sorts. I dunno how far in the story you went but it occasionally jumps like 40 years into the future post-war and you get hints about what Tanya's been up to ever since.
and that's about as close to an epilogue as you'll get
>>
>>290332793
Tanya is too important not to hear about, say, Japan. If she were just an infantry person fighting in the trenches of Europe, then sure. But she stops being that pretty much instantly, and gets very involved in the map-painting politics. Besides, that's what made WW1 and 2 *world* wars - Europe was bickering with itself throughout its history, nothing about that would've been noteworthy if everyone else didn't join in.
The author didn't want Tanya to fight the American troops because, to a modern Japanese author, that sounds very icky. And you should never ever ever bring up the East during that time if you have any hope of your book selling in China or South Korea (and Youjo Senki was actually published in China). So those parts of the world were left up to the audience's imagination. Again, it's a silly wehraboo loli book.
>>
>>290332882
The web novel's ending was absolute dogshit, because it was clearly rushed, with zero thought put into it. The war literally just stops because Tanya sees big burger dick on the horizon and tells everyone to pack it up. And everyone agrees, no questions asked. Then her unit does a suicide mission where they fake their deaths, and she immigrates to the US with a fake persona "because no one knew her real name or face". Yes, the greatest war hero of the Empire, whose face should be plastered all over every history book, goes anonymous without a care and starts a shipping company named after her military unit. Sonzai X is not even part of the equation btw, we just kinda forget about him. And don't worry about Visha, she didn't exist in the web novel at all. The end.
It's pretty obvious that, once Carlo Zen got the LN deal, where he could actually refine and streamline the story, he lost interest in the web novel, and only finished it to spitball ideas for the LN.

It's like talking to ChatGPT, having no sense of what a character knows or not and how a situation might develop.
>If it’s closer to world war one she has a much easier time avoiding conscription
Kek, you have no idea what you're talking about do you? Then she just hops on to a train to Italy like it's the modern Europe with freedom of movement for EU citizens.
>They use her rather quickly, mages are rare enough
After she has accidentally been sent to the front 2 times already and proven herself. Then she receives T95 and "doesn't care anymore".
>Commies only join after mainland france is defeated, she joined the army before
So? She "knows" they will join the world war if that was reason enough for her. I really meant it as a showcase to show that she has no absolutes against war.
I'll repeat it again, it is enough if she were to land an instructor position and stall for time. Tanya believes in self-determination and stacking the deck in her favour. It is up to each individual to do their utmost for themselves. Does she want to go to war? No. Would she do so if she was put in a situation where it was expected of her or as self-defense? Yes. She might curse that it is expected of her but she would fulfil her duty. And still being a mage is not synonymous or guaranteed to be sent to the front. The worse the war gets the higher the chance. If she must be on the front she prefers to have a proper contra rushed training and as much experience as she can.
>after she burned the bridges, singing national anthem to boot

>But such adherence to the rules kinda clashes with her being a libertarian
Sigh. Tanya likes rules and law, they are one of the cornerstones of civilization which is the greatest achievement of mankind. Law is required for a free-market society, yada, yada. But they are also for twisting them to their utmost and beating your adversary over the head with them, if they then break the law they have usually in one way or the other lost. The civilized way of conflict, law and order. Tanya is a letter of the law kind of person. Would Tanya casually break the rules or law? No. Would she ever break them? Yes, if she could mitigate the outcome. Breaking them is equivalent to breaking trust which is another cornerstone of civilization. This also leads to would Tanya join a war if circumstances is pressuring her to or if it was expected of her? Yes, but she'd still do her utmost to be safe. Not doing so makes her a black sheep. If it is for self-defence or against commies she'd even more proactively do so. What about desertion then? It's breaking trust and the law, essentially making her a black sheep. Would she do it? Yes, but she'd be sad to lose her 203rd babies/investment and her radiant military career.

Even so, even within libertarianism or any ideology or what have you there are usually a lot of divergent opinions on a great many things, some might even oppose a cornerstone but still identify as the ideology. You still have no sense of nuance.

>like modern EU
No, but moving is still possible. And so os avoiding conscription-bribes, faked documents, doctor’s notes. People pulled ot off in USSR during ww2
>doesn’t care anymore
You don’t really “not care about war”. She clearly enjoys it.
Also look at Visha. She’s clearly young and fresh put of conscription and she’s still a frontline fighter
>she knows they will join
No she doesn’t, because then she wouldn’t be surprised when they attacked. Also there are notable divergences in the world, like Japan’s and Italy’s neutrality. Just because Russia joined otl doesn’t mean they will here
>no guarantee to go to the front
The chance is significantly higher. She’s a major at the current point, and still takes part in direct fighting. You are acting like her back line position is a safeguard when historically it isn’t-to use ww2 example by the end germany was using luftwaffe and tankers as infantry. Which they did before conscripting children. Even a backline position puts her in more risk of fighting
>enough time to land an instructor position
Not really. Fighter pilot instructors in ww2 were typically rather experienced
>laws mentality
Which is an extremely odd mindset for someone claiming to be a libertarian. You know, “driver license is one step away from toaster license” guys. As you mentioned yes, there are nuances, but belief in most laws being unjust is almost a cornerstone of libertarian ideology.
In essence you are treating her words over her actions. Which isn’t a contradiction. She’s just self deluded

>No, but moving is still possible.
Sure, before the war starts it isn't impossible but after it does it becomes extremely difficult.
>You don’t really “not care about war”
I meant it as she doesn't care about doing everything she can to get a rear position. She still pushes for it but not particularly hard.
>She clearly enjoys it.
Yes
>>she knows they will join
>No she doesn’t
You're essentially saying that she should have no clue that Russia will be a participant in a world war while simultaneously saying that of course Tanya should be predicting that this will turn into WW2 with a total collapse. Further she isn't surprised that Russia joins the war, it isn't even particularly surprising that she's sent to the east, she knows what this implies. The mindboggling thing is just that basically as soon as she arrives there another war starts (Russia invades), just like in Norden.
>Fighter pilot instructors in ww2 were typically rather experienced
Yes, even if you say typically that leaves the non-typical part that Tanya would be aiming for. Still instructors in both wars were a mixture of highly experienced and/or combat experienced and low experience and/or no combat experience. At the start of the wars the vast majority of instructors didn't have combat experience and towards the end of the wars it was maybe a low majority that did.
>The chance is significantly higher.
Tanya sees risk as something to be handled per her HR experience and opportunity as something to capitalize on, this is what makes her such a great combatant and officer. She does not retreat per default nor is particularly risk adverse. Being sent to the front is not a losing condition, doing so as a greenhorn is.
>belief in most laws being unjust is almost a cornerstone of libertarian ideolog
Yes, but that is a problem of legislation not laws themselves. Libertarians usually have a strong belief in law and order.

The window where “she’s too young to leave” and “old enough to get a backline position” is very narrow

Which is very odd for someone that hates war. That self proclaimed pacifist has surprisingly a lot in common with card-carrying Wagner/Azov member.
She’s highly ruthless even compared to other soldiers, see how she treated revelling city. Whats-his name-had a mental breakdown.
> You're essentially saying that she should have no clue that Russia will be a participant in a world war
Italy and Japan don’t join. Sweden does despite being neutral otl. Russia joined in otl doesn’t mean it will here

>being sent to the front is not a losing position, being sent as a greenhorn is
One year as a greenhorn sounds more survivable than six as an experienced officer
>predict it turns into a ww2 with total collapse
If it doesn’t then her chances of conscription are significantly lower
To summarise, since we’re somewhat going in circles, her plan requires a lot of things to go right, and someone that dislikes war would tend to go for another option. Her hatred of war seems like an ad hoc justification.>>290337636

I'm not sure what you're getting at.
>odd for someone that hates war. That self proclaimed pacifist
I've repeatedly told you that she's not a strict pacifist. She hates war because it is wasteful. But if war exists, so be it. If she could end the war at any particular point over the series she would do it in a heartbeat. We do have a particularly interesting case in in Season 1 where she might be able to end the war by committing to the attack against Brest/De Lugo. But she doesn't because she not hate war enough to put her career in jeopardy. Also it wouldn't really be guaranteed but.
>Italy and Japan don’t join
Yet, we don't know what happens. But yes, the point being we don't know what happens so her plan still isn't unreasonable.
>Which means her plan requires plenty of luck
Not too much luck, as long as the odds are stacked in her favour it's a reasonable risk to take.
>One year as a greenhorn sounds more survivable than six as an experienced officer
And as mentioned, there is no reason to expect her to serve on the front for the full duration of the war. If in the last year of the war they're sending everyone as isn't unreasonable per ww2 then it becomes one year as a greenhorn one year with five years of experience, even if not combat experience. Mages need to train all kinds if skills to improve their lets call it spell casting.

>someone that dislikes war would tend to go for another option
Yes, but because she is career minded she sees a perfect opportunity to kickstart her career with plenty of opportunity to rise in the ranks. Career > dislike of war.
>But dislike of mass surveillance, criminalisation of “victimless” acts and government overreach are required to be a libertarian.

What I mentioned above. If the war starts too late, she can immigrate and be in a better position than if she joined. If the war starts too early, she’d be in a better position if she just doesn’t join and it ends before she’s conscripted. Joining the military is only beneficial in the edge case that there’s enough time to rise in rank but not enough to just leave
>because that would put her career in jeopardy
If you value your career above ending the war you don’t hate war
> Yet, we don't know what happens. But yes, the point being we don't know what happens so her plan still isn't unreasonable.
That was about her “knowing” USSR would join
>not too much luck
We clearly see her getting screwed over by bad luck and saved by good luck. Plenty in that plan is up to chance
>And as mentioned, there is no reason to expect her to serve on the front for the full duration of the war. If the war is desperate enough for early teen mages to be conscripted it’s desperate enough for mages in backline position to be sent to the front

>The only one of these that are applicable might be government overreach but the war is supported by the people, so not particularly. And here it is a defensive war.

Tanya is mostly sees humans as the dominant species capable of rationality and thus not only has the capability of self-determination but every individual should strive for it. Life is mostly a meritocracy. A side effect of this is that she is utterly affronted by Being X, that is someone beyond humanity meddling in in her model of reality, her reality and her path of self-determination. Anyway as a consequence she does see participating in life as one of the duties of her self as a citizen and a rational agent. It is perfectly reasonable to hate war but participate in it. She could even love combat but hate war as it destroys and wastes everything around it, an extreme loss of capital. She is put into a place that is about to be embroiled into war and she chooses to participate in it as a citizen there instead of escaping, not because of patriotism but because that is how she believes what one should do. This is also partly because she as an orphan has already benefitted from the institutions of the Empire and taken benefit of it, thus she has some debt/responsibility to it.

Funnily enough, this kind of "no retreat allowed, fight with everything you have no matter the cost" approach is exactly what the Soviet Union was famous for in WW2. Before they managed to assemble the firepower to drive the Nazis out, they fought more bitterly than perhaps any other military force in the world. The Germans were completely flabbergasted by how fanatical the Red Army was.

There is no coercion done by any participant from that position. If you believe that a libertarian should object to the government because of forced enlistment/draft later in the war, fine. Tanya wouldn't really care about it. She goes through the reasons, drawbacks and benefits and volunteers.

>when that much is riding on chance she should explore other options
you might say it ought to be so but it is not unreasonable if a character chooses otherwise.
>backline experience be in combat
The more "flight hours" you have the better, there are a multitude of things and spells a mage must learn to be skilled in the multitude of ways combat could go. There is a difference if you have thousands of hours drilled VS barely low hundred(s?).

Finished the movie.
This was definitely more entertaining than the first season. The obvious difference here is Mary - at long fucking last, Tanya has someone who can actually kick her teeth in. I was incredibly happy that she didn't die, because I want to see more of her, that one fight scene between the two was more interesting than pretty much any previous battle in the series so far.
Tanya's hatred of communists borders on parody here. It's obvious that the author's opinions are leaking through a bit, but it's actually a very good thing. The enemy forces in season 1 were almost entirely faceless - with the exception of Mary's father, everyone was just unremarkable fodder for Tanya to shoot. Here, we finally get a charismatic, colorful faction. In fact, I wish they were even more ridiculous - go full Tim Curry from Red Alert, have fun with it. That's the kind of story Youjo Senki should be.
The visuals are pretty good, the movie budget is obvious. I especially like the background paintings, really nice stuff.

>Yes, but how is she supposed to know which country will not be embroiled by the war?
She can be reasonably certain US won’t. Use the hypothetical switzerland and move from there. Migration used to be easier
>There is no coercion done by any participant from that position.
Most libertarians don’t object to voluntary army service, but treating it as a debt to pay is a decidedly statist way of looking at things
I also forgot to mention that in previous post, but I wouldn’t call Tanya unpatriotic-not that it conflicts with her libertarian position
>you might say it ought to be so but it is not unreasonable if a character chooses otherwise.
To be fair herearly years were glossed over in anime, so she might have thought it over and rejected it. However, narratively to show that she’s antiwar it would make sense for it to be mentioned. And it should be a bigger deal-for an antiwar person to join it should be last or near last resort, yet she never acts like it
>flight hours
Yes, but you are also stuck at the point where governments are figuring out modern war. And easier to surrender later on

I found the commie bits to be a bit eye rolling at times ala Enemy at the Gates. Poor intelligencia condemned to firing squad for free thought forced to rise from the graves through threat of another firing squad and storm enemy lines with nothing but shovels. Still enjoyed the movie, don’t get me wrong, but that schtick is a bit old
In S2 they actually get a more nuanced view. At least in the episodes I had time to watch

>treating it as a debt to pay
Eh, bad way of putting it, I can to concede that, I was in a bit of a hurry. I have a vague memory of her stating some reciprocal idea in one of her monologues about either civilization, citizenship or whatever. It could just be her idea that modern civilization should be protected. I could maybe skim some of the LN later if I get the time. Paraphrasing maybe more in line with her, she volunteers for the army because it is mutually beneficial instead of exploitative if she where to be drafted later which is a guarantee as long as she is in the country. She isn't really sentimental nor patriotic in her thoughts, but as you're alluding to, you can interpret her to be through the lines of her rationalizations. She outwardly states however that she thinks patriots are numbskulls and she doesn't have shred of a patriotic bone in her body, and no love for the Empire. Further paraphrasing the state/Empire and all the other countries participating in the world at war but she can still carve out a (beneficial) path for herself in such an evil organization and weather the storm. If the Empire weren't a such a rational meritocracy she would not have had the opportunity she does.
>antiwar
It is purely intellectual dislike as mentioned for the consequences it brings and can be seen in the LN. She is but a lone person and does not have any great power to influence anything, especially in Imperial Germany, so her "resistance" is also kept purely in her thoughts for fear that someone might deem her unpatriotic. To be fair I can't remember how much they really cover her early years in the LN more than strewn out reflections here and there.
>also stuck at the point where governments are figuring out modern war
Sounds good, let others die to random preventable causes while she can snap up all the lessons learned from it.

>What evidence of her hating war do we have anyway, other than her own words?
Missed this, but pretty much just her own words though some action. Plenty of her monologues are about the negative consequences of war and why peace is preferable. She is full of anger and spite for it. Most I could point at for actions is her twisting her orders under the general staff to try to forcefully attack Brest as mentioned earlier. She doesn't go far enough to disobey outright orders though, leading to her losing her career but probably also a firing squad (at least in her mind). At every turn when discussing grand strategy or otherwise her suggestion is trying to find any way to stop the war or usually needing to paraphrase it in a way to not seem unpatriotic. You can't be a coward or a defeatist as a soldier in Imperial Germany.

Youjo Senki is actually an interesting spin on the usual isekai power fantasy narrative. Tanya is incredibly OP, virtually unbeatable, incapable of losing a battle. Unfortunately for her, she's also incapable of winning the war because her opponent is omnipotent. And even though she seems to know everything and have perfect foresight, this is the one thing she consistently doesn't understand.

>It is purely intellectual dislike as mentioned for the consequences it brings and can be seen in the LN.
I may concede this point. She might intellectually dislike it while (not so) deep down enjoying it, both the minute to minute combat and general war fighting. Again, she pulls of shit that makes other soldiers uncomfortable

Also, I keep seeing the thing about Carlo Zen "requesting the studio to make Tanya uglier so the lolicons don't latch onto her", but after some digging, this seems to be a complete hoax, which actually came from this post on /a/ >>151696460 , with a game of telephone that followed adding lolicons to the quote.
In reality, it's very obvious that it's just the style they went for. All characters have these detailed lips (not noticeable on men because their faces are realistic, so it doesn't stand out), and the girls also have huge eyes. It's not about making them sexy or not, I think the animators just wanted the few characters who are allowed to be expressive to actually be expressive. Most of the cast are realistically drawn men; they can't do shit on camera. Tanya and Visha are the only characters who are allowed to look a bit silly, so they were redesigned with the ability to push their expressions more than others. This also made them kinda cartoony, with huge mouths and eyes uncharacterisitc of anime, but it definitely works.

>post factum rationalisation
Well, we've both stated that depending on how the war goes there is no escaping it (if she's in the country). She knows this as well without needing to think to deeply about it.
>she clearly acts patriotic
The anime is mostly the portrayal of Tanya as others see her. This is her professional façade per signaling theory. There's some nuance you could make that after she has volunteered now it is her career on the line and out of self interest she does of course not want her organization/company (the Empire/military) to fail or at least fail too badly. Defeat/Surrender does not necessarily mean failure and victory is preferable. She does of course also care for her men and like celebrating with them.
>she hadn’t defected
She's thrown her lot in with the military voluntarily, what reason does she have to defect, because she dislikes war? In the LN it is only when she believes there are numbskulls in charge of the army, a poor investment, that she's weighing whether she should cut her losses.
>Again, she pulls of shit that makes other soldiers uncomfortable
Yes, no doubt about that. She is however odd from top to bottom, not really too unreasonable nor too irrational though. In the WN the author jokes in one of the early chapter that she acquires some sadism (something like: "trait acquired: sadism, trait acquired: combat junkie") or something similar.
>No, YOU are the poor schmuck charging into machine gun fire wearing red pants
If she isn't sent too the front until she's say 15 or a couple of years later then it's less likely. Mages are also a unit of their own. If the war goes on for too long however there is also the chance that a country invests heavily enough into anti-air or anti-mage type technologies that the equivalent happens.

In her mind that is the natural response for disobedience in Imperial Germany hence why I said at least in her mind. If reality would be different doesn't really matter as that is what kind of organization she believes she is in.

I wouldn't say season 1 was all that edgy. Tanya obviously had her moments, and I mentioned her speech following the assault on Arene before (that was the biggest example of the author pontificating about shit he clearly didn't think much about, and coming off stupid), but as a whole, Tanya usually had more to say on economics than war, framing everything around it, being the enlightened libertarian she is. You can tell Carlo Zen doesn't give a shit about politics - notice how, in an empire at war, the emperor doesn't seem to exist. His domain is clearly the economic sector, which is why I have a theory that he himself was a salaryman in a black company, and this was written in part as therapy.

>The anime is mostly the portrayal of Tanya as others see her. This is her professional façade per signaling theory.
The stunt she pulled in moscow indicates otherwise. There is signal theory and there is planting your flag in enemy capital while singing the national anthem and escalating the war to 11
>She's thrown her lot in with the military voluntarily, what reason does she have to defect, because she dislikes war?
Yes? If she sees joining the military primarily as a way to keep herself safe she should logically take the actions that would make her even safer and gurantee she won’t end up fighting anymore. She’s clearly not operating only on logic through
>If she isn't sent too the front until she's say 15 or a couple of years later then it's less likely
This assumes mages are used properly but their counter isn’t. Which is a true assumption, but she doesn’t know it. What if they were used like french used tanks and just ended up as metal coffins?

>Her joining military puts her in more danger in 90% of the cases. And she isn’t required to stay in country
I've stated the reasons why she joined (good opportunity, not too risk adverse, a clever scheme in the works, mutually beneficial, curse being x, maybe something other), It would be difficult to leave but not impossible. Last reason I can remember is pretty much her view on Signaling theory. Fleeing war makes her character seem unreliable and is a detriment to her career prospects. Yes, you could argue it is ridiculous as she is say 8 years old but this is mostly how he would view such a job candidate if he was hiring and imagining hiring managers sensibilities at the time.
>There is signal theory and there is planting your flag in enemy capital while singing the national anthem and escalating the war to 11
Ehm, she sees communists as the great evil of the world and humanity should rise up to defeat or contain it so she is self-admittedly over eager to combat them. I can't remember how the anime portrays but she is reprimanded heavily over it but Zettour overrides them because the strategic decision behind the attack and the humiliation was sound. It is the same conversation where he gives her the order to prove her doctrine of Kampfgruppen and gets the Salamanders.
>Come on, she’s a former HR

>This assumes mages are used properly but their counter isn’t.
If the counter to mages are too strong on the battlefield they are probably more useful "outside" of it. For example healing, logistics/industry, recon. Still she has a good chance to not be on the front as someone below 15 years old. If she joins at 8...

Disobedience leads to firing squad. In the case of Arene she means that Grantz being a soldier has agency in the matter, the army orders it.
>beyond some surface level intellectual thought that only she believes in fully
Yeah, we agreed her dislike stems from intellectual rationalization. If you want I can say it isn't a cornerstone of her personality but she enjoys the fruits of peace. Her free-market is an ideal that isn't really functional under war conditions. Libertarianism however is, as outright stated by the author outside of the story. Also see >>290345592,
>She’s been in the military for years, she should know how it operates
It's outright stated that disobediance can lead to the firing squad in their doctrine. Zettour and Lergen has a discussion about it for her time in the Academy, Lergen says it however isn't the default but worst case. Further what if the attack on Brest radicalized another country or put the peace in jeopardy, is the firing squad then possible?
>>
>>290347084
Grantz being a soldier has NO agency in the matter, the army orders it. She orders him per military order and she was in turn ordered. Per law neither is responsible here unless they are going outside of the order

I'll qualify it further. Weiss or maybe Grantz later interprets her action as taking away Grantz choice in the matter and putting the moral burden on herself. If Grantz is threatened to do it he has no choice, either he doesn't and dies and the civilians are still shot or he can retreat into the shield of being a soldier without choice. If by chance someone here were to be held accountable it would be Tanya as the field commanding officer.

I assure you not a single person hiring would say “8 year old fleeing war” is a detriment to her character
>Ehm, she sees communists as the great evil of the world and humanity should rise up to defeat or contain it so she is self-admittedly over eager to combat them.
It’s less the communist part and more how she goes about it
>Zettour overrides them because the strategic decision behind the attack and the humiliation was sound
Not a stone towards her but that part is questionable. Her actions basically galvanised USSR and made backing down near impossible
>If the counter to mages are too strong on the battlefield they are probably more useful "outside" of it.
And if she joins later she’ll more likely to be used in that role ratger than early suicidal attacks
>Probably valid military targets or the army orders it.
Yes, they are legal targets but an anti war, or even a regular person would have second thoughts over it. She had none. Which brings me to the point she’s not particularly anti-war deep down
Another note on the commies. She sees fighting them as a just war, but so do most people that support a war. Very few people say “yeah, I think war is good in general”. You wouldn’t call a cold war hawk an anti-war person due to their support for anti communist interventions? When I think of an anti-war person it’s typically conscious objector
>Disobedience leads to firing squad. In the case of Arene she means that Grantz being a soldier has agency in the matter, the army orders it.
Getting a soldier to a firing squad is actually pretty rare.

>>
>>290347891
So we are in agreement here, and above you agreed that she enjoys fighting. The remaining question is how much she likes the war subconsciously and how much of a libertarian she is, no?
>author stated in ln
Her LN version is rather different. I’d saythe biggest is combat drugs and spells present over her regular thrill of the fight.
If we stick to anime there is rather little of her libertarian tendencies showing and quite a few anti-libertarian ones. She might describe herself as a libertarian, and maybe she was, but
1) she did live through a war and that shakes up a persons beliefs
2) she was isekaid in 2014. Right wing scene was different at the time. Plenty of so called dissident right self identified as libertarians because there was no semi mainstream alternative and the overtone window was narrower
Another thing that should have gone in a previous post but didn’t due to character limit is what is an anti-war person. If you mean anyone that doesn’t like war for sake of war then yes. But that’s a rather narrow definition. She clearly isn’t squeamish about killing or concept of war in general and she does have loyalty to her nation

the communist part is why she goes about it as such. Of course she has a perfect opportunity to add accolades to her career while shamefully having some fun as well.
>Her actions basically galvanised USSR and made backing down near impossible
This is the exact reason for her reprimand/inquiry, you can see most of it in pic rel, specially 3rd,4th column. It is from Lergens perspective, a normal persons.
>Getting a soldier to a firing squad is actually pretty rare.
Yes, but in the Kriegsacademy one of the regular lessons they have for officer candidates or maybe all cadets, is being the shooter in a firing squad against someone convicted. So it isn't particularly rare to her. This might be WN only and I might be misremembering something. I think the LN mostly glosses over the academy. She does know of course that it is the worst case scenario but she always defaults to it.
>conscious objector
I don't particularly disagree with you. I don't particularly view Tanya as pro-war either. Nothing hints that she would keep the war going if she had the choice. Everything points to that she would stop it. In the last couple of episodes there was the hope of it ending and she was happy they managed to bring a field victory that the federation wanted to sue for peace. The Empire rejected to her anger.

>likes the war subconsciously
Eh, she pretty much enjoys as such most parts of it, consciously too. She's good at it, it is challenging and she likes outwitting and winning over her enemies. Strategy, logistics, law, all her particular set of interests. The empire being a meritocracy and the general staff being rationalist makes the movement of the war machine into a beautiful lock-stepping symphony of rationality. There are a lot of things she also hates about it as the gruelling conditions she is put in, exhausting days of non-stop fighting, almost never resting, losing subordinates/skilled meatshields, intelligence being a bunch of good for nothings, etc. Of course the immense loss of human and material capital, shit food, etc, etc. She and her men are run ragged and are a minor mistake from devastation so she must keep her and their minds sharpened to prevent it.
>she did live through a war and that shakes up a persons beliefs
She is not more pro war for it, but sure a combat junkie. If anything she lives through some extremes, partly making her more human and partly sharpening her rationality to follow mother necessity.

Yes

Hah, if you want I could say that libertarianism is how Tanya understands, processes and interprets the world, or one of her cornerstones. The Chicago school of economics is especially enlightening to her. Before this the Salaryman couldn't understand how others or maybe it was how the world functions. I'd even go so far as to say she processes most of her emotions through this lens. So if you find that no, this is just a facade she wears you're not strictly wrong. This is partly why I call her a tsundere.
>I mean telling how it changed her exactly would require hundreds of pages of character exploration

I might have misrepresented it slightly, Tanya is extremely career (self?)conscious and she has a tendency to acutely overreact to things/fretting (in her mind of course, it would be unprofessional to do so outwardly). Also she does not hold other to her own standard. In this case she'd basically be misrepresenting a recruiters sensibilities in order to fret over it. So it is only true for her in a sense but it has some weight to her mind.
This overreaction can also be seen by her defaulting her being executed by the firing squad for the slightest mistake.

>Hah, if you want I could say that libertarianism is how Tanya understands, processes and interprets the world, or one of her cornerstones. The Chicago school of economics is especially enlightening to her
That just means she believes in free market. Libertarian ideology comes with other beliefs attached
>I'd even go so far as to say she processes most of her emotions through this lens
Ah, yes, the autism superpower
But she can perfectly understand other frames of mind. Well, not perfectly, due to autism. But after interrogating the Soviet soldier she realised they are fighting for patriotism instead of sperging out about muh government. Which, to be fair, does point to her having trouble understanding other people-did she expect them to charge the machine gun for Marx? But then again, this would make sense if her exposure to communism was 2010 western/japanese commies

Idk, I tend to keep my reading “mature” while being freer with shit I watch. Although some fanfics/web novels are my guilty pleasure

>It’s not even post modern, general “let’s not drag a war forever and not get into pointless ones” has been the sentiment since, idk, 1500
Eh, I don't care to argue about it. I'm mostly using the words of the Salaryman as directly as written in the novel. She's not implying it is anything particularly impressive or new. Probably the only difference being the classical romantic part of warfare is mostly gone from the public view. There is no particular heroism or justice as such to be found in war.
>That just means she believes in free market. Libertarian ideology comes with other beliefs attached
Yes, explicitly uses many of the cornerstones of Libertarian ideology, the other beliefs included to build her rational model of the world. A centerpiece being the free market. She uses some thought experiments or theory of thoughts as further support pillars.
>But after interrogating the Soviet soldier she realised they are fighting for patriotism
The difference being a patriot usually has high morale essentially allowing them to be high performing military personnel that can do absurd or suicidal stunts with lasting fervor. But the most important part is this doesn't make them an enemy/commie and can be turned into an ally. Why she would be able to realize it or more specifically its significance is because of its importance in military history for the world wars. This doesn't really have anything with understanding their frame of mind. The captives are directly spelling it out to them, calling them idiots because they can't understand such a basic concept.
>>

>There is no particular heroism or justice as such to be found in war.
Yeah, ww1 killed that notion in popular mind
>Yes, explicitly uses many of the cornerstones of Libertarian ideology, the other beliefs included to build her rational model of the world.
That might be in the web novel. But I still find the idea of self proclaimed libertarian fighting for imperial Germany with explicit end goal of a cushy government position questionable.

Reincarnation doesn´t really count as the character is reborn and is biologically female. Genetics and biology are higher on the hierarchy compared to self perception, in fact the later is irrelevant because it´s mostly a social construct while the others are of natural order. Off course being reborn and altering biology is impossible so this doesn´t apply to reality, just for isekai. Bear in mind that thinking any different would be the actual pro tranny discourse.

Take it then as it is the facade Tanya wears. Up to you to figure out what is beneath.
It is still an absurdist comedy but the author did a lot of work to make it work and be enjoyable. Up to you.
>It’s about having that spelled out to her.
Not sure what you mean but they spelled it out to everyone? Visha I think was the interpreter and she still didn't really understand. Nobody there understood why patriotism is significant even after Tanya stated, that oh fuck, they're patriots. Anyway remember that the captives are speaking russian here and that the fighters were patriots were lost in translation as it is of course natural to be a patriot in Imperial Germany. Tanya picks it up because she knows a bit of Russian and understands seeing and hearing the interrogation that the Patriotism part and significance is lost, it never reaches analysis in the rear. The general staff is strategizing from bad information

I was wondering what exactly motivates God in this story, and I think the best way to understand what Sonzai X is would be to look at Carlo's nickname that he uses everywhere. Sonzai X is literally just him. When Tanya is fighting against God, she's fighting against the author. This answers pretty much any question you have about him. Like, why doesn't this God just cast endless torture on her, or put her in an unwinnable position, or just infect her entire squad off with a sudden bout of super ebola so she could helplessly watch her comrades choke on their own blood and pray for their salvation? Why doesn't he step in any time she has success, but only sometimes? He's omnipotent, after all.
But as an author, his job is not to just mindbreak Tanya; it's to make a fun story. So he, as a deus ex machina, always comes in when Tanya beats his challenge to present her with the next challenge. Sonzai X only steps in once Tanya finally gets off the front lines for her beloved desk job, so he can make a phone call and send her back into the fray with the chess pieces rearranged. His job is to make her life an endless Sisyphean task for our entertainment, so his modus operandi is to give her a challenge and step away, as opposed to constantly fucking with her.

>what exactly motivates God in this story
The reason given is that faith is disappearing and it is required for the system (such as reincarnation, maybe divine power, etc) to function. After their clash in S1E2 where Salaryman ridicules Being X for how their organization is run backing his arguments with a couple of points why faith has no appeal to him personally (He is an adult man in a peaceful world with a good status/career). Being X has a conniption fit over this insolence but takes his points with some value and wants to experiment. What if we take this asshole and make him reincarnate as a woman in wartimes, will he awaken to faith? After reincarnating Salaryman as Tanya the anime and LN diverges but essentially the anime has Being X be a bit more petty/spiteful, not exactly actively malicious although Tanya imagines it to be so. Being X is here just experimenting and giving him a slight punishment but his real goal is to increase faith among humanity.

>Sonzai X is literally just him. When Tanya is fighting against God, she's fighting against the author.
You're essentially right though. Being X is a plot device. The series is a comedy, and in his infinite smugness Carlo Zen chose Sonzai X as his handle.

It was even dumber than that. Hitler managed to catch Stalin off-guard, and on that alone, his troops managed to move all the way up to Moscow. And then, exactly like Napoleon before him, he underestimated Russian weather, and his overextended lines, with no supplies or even appropriate clothing, simply froze to death. The momentum was completely squandered, and even though they dealt significant damage to the Western part of the Soviet Union, Stalin simply moved the production lines east, and then churned out enough tanks and bombers for every kraut to have a shell with their name on it. Then, with his main forces pushed out, Hitler tried some vague maneuvers in the Caucasus in a bid for free oil, but it was far too late; the Eastern Front was a lost cause.

with pure brain washing. In the manga Tanya has missing memories every time she uses Being X's power she unconsciously spouts religious spew, And walks around worshiping him . Everyone on her team assumes shes very religious

Its too bad the anime doesn't show that, or the amount of drugs she's used

That's actually kinda cool.
Imagine this for the finale - the war is over, peace reigns, everyone is happy. We see the Salamander guys live their best lives, Visha has a happy family, etc. Just absolute peace after all the carnage, Code Geass style.
Then the camera shifts to a church, where we see a nun praying. And when she raises her head, we realize that it's Tanya, with a completely blank stare. The image cuts out, and there's one final phrase - "Oh, Kami-sama e...".
I think that would actually be brilliant.
>>
>>290373872
that would be hilarious , Manga Tanya does notice her missing memories and the fact that she starts to have more religious items on her person like the rosary she had in the anime

In the manga that was her clue along with her team commenting on her religious fervor that the MORE often she uses being X power the more she is brain washed. Its why she's sometimes reluctant to use the power

I dont think being X cares if she actually worships him but is using her as more of a mouthpiece for faith, which she is doing a good job doing, willing or not
>>
>>290372572

>>
>>290374682
I wonder if this plot point exists in the book, because if it does, it changes everything, and I've no idea why the anime guys ignored it. With this, anytime Tanya uses Being X's nuke, she's making a choice of giving him an inch to save herself or those around her. It's not just a big red button she gets with his name on it. And it would also show her character development - doing this means she's giving up the selfishness she valued in herself for the sake of other people.

In the books there are multiple gods, a pantheon. Being X is one of them but he only interacts with Tanya the one time, reincarnating her into this alternate world. The pantheon together decides on the T95 as a miracle to help spread faith, see pic >>290318181
So she knows from the start that the orb influences her. It forces unto her genuine pure faith along with letting words of prayer flow from her mouth. But they are not forcing her to use the orb itself, she voluntarily does so.

Initially though she believed it was purely limited to the time she was using the orb but as mentioned some effects lingers. And so she calls the orb cursed, it is corrupting her. This makes her double down into some different mental and physical routines of cursing/spiting Being X as a way of mental hygiene, to keep her mind clean and remain herself. Sometimes she catches herself with some stray thought that is usually very far away from her original Salaryman mind and curses Being X for corrupting her. But is it?
>if she actually worships him
In the LN so far as the anime is the gods have done 4 things. Reincarnate Tanya, give her T95. Bless Mary Sue. Antagonize the Federation plunging them into the war in order to rid the world of godless communist and see faith flourish again.

Meant to say that they don't particularly care about Tanya too much as we have seen. They want humanity to regain faith which is the path to reach enlightenment.

I'll add I think she also loses some memories as depicted in the manga and somewhat in the anime. They become a haze but she might remember some particular here, you can imagine a comedy hangover memoryloss. This mostly only happens when she abuses the use of the orb, as she did on the Rhine front or when training the 203rd battalion and why she was particularly malicious towards them in the training. (She does not become malicious per her blessing, maybe more zealot like but does so as an aftereffect when her spite/anger sets in.) Also it is not really evil malicious, more taking out anger.

>Most countries don't give soldiers a choice in their MOS or deployment.
Yes, there is of course no guarantee where she will be placed. Only a decent chance that they might take her age into account while deciding placement. It is usually a better value to place her somewhere where she has time to grow up a bit contra the front lines. And as you've stated her placement was as a non-combatant in peacetime. But because of multiple miscalculations from the Empire she commissioned and deployed there because she was in the vicinity when the Entente invaded. Her thoughts if you're interested.
>Under normal circumstances, if the Empire entered a state of “semi-war” at this point, Tanya’s position would allow her to fall back to the rear echelon and serve in noncombat roles. After all, Warrant Officer Tanya Degurechaff had been a cadet attending the military academy up until the outbreak of hostilities. A greenhorn would only get in the way on the front lines, so it would be normal for her to serve somewhere in the rear, such as in the Technical Arsenal or Logistical Command, once the Empire began making preparations in anticipation of war.
>Yet despite the unsettling state of world affairs, Tanya’s optimistic superiors decided this was all merely brinkmanship diplomacy. Thanks to them, she was stuck completing her training out in the field. The flight patrols she took part of in coordination with the army were only intended to serve as an extension of the education she was receiving at the academy. Having lost her opportunity to withdraw to the rear, Tanya was officially commissioned as a second lieutenant and deployed upon completing her training.

Man, the art in the second season is so much better than the first. The first often had issues with Tanya going off-model in non-static poses, but here, she always looks on-point. The combat is very fun and dynamic. CGI is not as obvious. Considering how much damn time it took them to produce, at least I can see where the effort went.
Also, Tanya mentions being brainwashed by Being X, but it's an off-hand remark. I wonder if they just realized that they kinda skipped this plot point before, and now they're trying to sneak it back in.

This is actually surprisingly insightful. People who fought in WW2 didn't fight for some ideology like communism or nazism; to most soldiers, it was a war of extermination where you kill or be killed along with your family. Everyone was fighting for their homeland, and only party people gave a shit about ideological fluff in such dire circumstances.

This isn't entirely true, though. WW2 was one of the most ideologically charged conflicts in human history, with WW1 being a close second. Most people DID fight for ideology.
The actual realization to be had is that the Empire are viewed as the aggressors in the conflict, not that nobody is actually communist in communist Russia.

I'd say the Cold War was far more ideologically charged, for obvious reasons. That's when Tanya's earlier sperging out about the commies would've been more appropriate. In WW2, Germany used ideology to explain why their sons suddenly had to be shipped to some frozen hellhole and die there, but they were the only ones who really needed it. The USSR was quite ideologically charged (though not as much as they were in the 60s, which I would consider their peak), but the Red Army didn't need Marx and Lenin to explain why they had to drive the Nazis out by any means necessary, and the same goes for the Brits and Frenchmen. That made the Allies a far stronger alliance than the Axis - they were united in defending against the common enemy, while the Axis only had vague ideas of invading others because lebensraum or some shit I dunno.
>>
>>290398356
>>290398536
WW2 was a war initiated by economics
the ideology of the nazi party was more about explaining why the previous system of government was bad and needed to be replaced
I don't think anybody needed to explain to the german people why the war was necessary after living through hyperinflation induced by *other countries* enforcing an unrepayable eternal debt.

WW1 was caused by brinksmanship; a primitive version of mutually assured destruction where economics was supposed to explain why war should have been impossible. In actuality, it was guaranteed by contracts and balkan retardation.

I haven't read youjo senki in a while but I'm not really sure where the justification for the war even really comes from other than a series of unhappy accidents.

Cold War was fought over ideology, but there was actually a decline in the general public's perception of ideologies following WW2. Just look at Vietnam if you want to see the disconnect between the government's view of why the war is happening and the public's.
>>290398728
I don't disagree that the cause of WW2 was economic and resource based, but it was the height of ideology as far as the average soldier was concerned.
Like no Japanese soldier would say "I'm fighting for oil in southeast asia". They'd say some shit like "FOR THE EMPEROR" or "DOWN WITH WESTERN IMPERIALISM IN ASIA!" And the same is true of Allied Soldiers, Soviet Soldiers, and other Axis soldiers. The man on the frontline couldn't give a fuck about economics or resources; which is the problem with Tanya's little revelation. She's once again misapplying a modern perception on an early 20th century problem.
