Also all early digital anime has a horrible DVD look due to the low resolution.
>>
Modern digital animation at its peak has way higher highs than any non digital show has ever seen, and it will only continue to get better as techniques are improved.

Yea I mean this whole season is visually better than pretty much any predigital show. After the BDs come out and it's fully fleshed out it will be a visual masterpiece, even if the story itself is pretty garbage.
>>
>>290286950
Remember my Memories sucks regardless of animation process
>>
>>290286950
To be fair, the studio making the first season used their own character designer while the second season was more faithful to the original game designs which had the typical late-90's jank look to them.

This entire debate is cringe because art is subjective.

>>290287102
Not even true.
Old anime did stuff modern anime just won't do anymore.
But at the same stuff modern anime has a level of refinement and freedom of expression old anime can only dream of.

>>290287758
It is true. There may be some lost/unused techniques but the peak of the modern industry, the shows/movies or whatever sakugafest garbage is being released has significantly better animation than anyone could have hoped for in the 90s. Cel animation just doesn't have the same resources that digital can. I agree that art is subjective, and people can like what they want, but cel animation has flatlined and digital surpassed it in quality years ago imo, and as it constantly improves more people will be forced to admit it.

>>

You don't actually watch anime so you wouldn't understand.

>>290288046
It's more about how old anime had different sensibility and you would get stuff that modern anime doesn't do anymore. Not because they can't but because styles have changed.
I agree that generally modern tv anime has made a lot of advancements though.
There's a reason people who glaze forgotten 80s OVAs will only post the same couple of webms. They do look great but it's still a trash anime.
>>
>>290288483
What, in your opinion, would be the most important of the "sensibilities" missing in modern day? I did say earlier I can agree that it's not 100% an improvement, but a slight trade off, and that I think it's better overall.

Speaking purely visually I'd say dark colours and contrasts.
Digital colouring has improved a lot since the 00s. Modern anime is great at doing bright and colourful worlds.
But looking clean isn't always the best. I want dark colours, strong contrasts, dirty characters.
People used to complain about "lack of shading" which was always bullshit but I think there's some truth to the sentiment. Problem isn't lack of shading but poor contrasts and overall tone.

>>
>>290288853
That's a good one, I think modern shading is solid but every show is vibrant with little contrast, especially in night time scenes, everything has a dark blue hue because visual clarity is prioritized over stylization. I watched the Angel Egg 4k remaster recently and the whole thing basically being shot at night reminded me of a similar idea.

>>
>>290288853
>>290289031
Modern anime hates dark tones and vivid colors. Also, really good shading is completely ruined because everything has to have the "Instagram look" with overblown bloom filters and color bleeding. When you take that out you get shows like the GiTS reboot that looks just like late 90s cel anime.
>>

While they are no longer wiping the floor, the modern Resident Evils, Final Fantasies and Souls and the like are on-par with anything released in the West. And miles ahead of any CGI shown in anime.

In fact, CGI in anime has somehow receded since the early 2000s.

>>290293863
This is a good example of why modern anime sucks. It's made by hacks who know nothing about the visual medium. They think sakooga and le funny gags are what makes anime good when in fact it was direction all along.
>>
>>290295911
Modern anime fans are sadly incapable of that. They'll need to spend at least a few hours asking for opinions and getting things vetted so they don't waste their valuable time on god's green earth.

Style vs Sense. The left is obviously better but is incredibly pretentious and tryhard for a casual explanation sequence.
>>
>>290295961
See, everyone always complains it's the animation that's the problem but the big issue has always been a lack of competent directors. Even a low budget show can look half decent if a good director knows how to actually stage things.

>>
>>290296051
>It's choice paralysis caused by having like 60 anime on your backlog,

See that's the part that troubles me. Having to download and actually wait a while for said downloads to finish is certainly a bit more of a process than today's options but it's not as if we weren't given plenty of choice on what to watch. We had a lot of available. The difference is that if we had our share of all of the Gundams to watch our reaction wasn't WHAT DO I WATCH FIRST! It was.... fuck yeah. No. I put the blame squarely on social media. People don't want to watch anime to watch anime, they want to fit in with the group and that means blindly following group think.

Fucking Jurassic Park 1 still blows most of modern Hollywood out of the water, simply because of how incredibly well the early CGI has been used and implemented by ILM.
Another fantastic example being Davy Jones in Pirates 2.
But yes, Transformers is another high point, simply because "we know how to light cars" due to the TV ad industry, also because Michael Bay unironically knows how to make things look good.

i think it's also because back then CGI was still new and they actually took their time with it
now it's seen as the norm and cheap, last minute additions you'll just add in post

Have you just not been paying any attention?

/a/ not actually watching anime isn't a meme. Hell, it seems many of these people don't even browse the site somehow.

At the very least it seems like there was a fascination with a still nascent technology. A lot of early 2000s stuff, for example Gonzo's entire body of work, feels more like they were trying something exciting and new. maybe it aged them poorly but it was clear they weren't, always, cutting corners. Some of the stuff I've seen studios use CGI for is honestly baffling.

feels like that's less of an argument against digital and moreso an argument as to why the character designs were so shit in the second pic.

sort of a symptom vs the disease kind of situation

Genuinely why is it so difficult to recreate the cell shaded look?

>complain of digital.
>post digital made anime made on different times.
I laugh.

You're such a boomer, no one wants to recreate old art. We want new art styles, new stories, new cinematography...etc. It could be worse than the past but it's not stagnant, that's the important part.

It's not. It's probably just expensive and there's no real value in doing so when most modern audiences don't want it. G-reco looked very retro and there was that Eva short a bit ago. You're also missing half of it. Things aren't recorded on film anymore. That's largely what you're seeing. That's were the beautiful beautiful grain comes from.

long riders changed my life. got me biking for over 3 or 4 years now. Can put away 2k miles a year just biking after work. I dont remember any other scenes as bad as this. Even with the obvious CGI. Give it a chance

I always hate this term seasonal anime. Id say 95% of anime are seasonal. So just about every anime is seasonal. They air, they come and go. What the definition for anime that is not seasonal? Permanent mainstays like sase-san? or whatever?

Its easier to count the animes that arent seasonal
>>
>>290308661
A seasonal is just someone who jumps from fad to fad with no lasting interesting or impact. It's a pretty effective term for the kind of fast food assembly line content production that just shits out thing after thing because the audience can bear the sound of their own thoughts for a minute.

the part that always gets me is you can see the aliasing. they don't even know how to render at high resolutions and downscale. did they hire third worlders for this?

You know there was a very brief period in my life where I didn't feel the need to hide my power level and I think I wasted it.
