03 is better up until Hughes is killed . The slower pace and darker tone it has in the early story gives key moments like that one greater emotional weight.

But Brotherhood is better from that point on, and better overall. The characters are more enjoyable (e.g. the homunculi) and Brotherhood has THE most satisfying climax + ending in Shonen, meanwhile 03 needed Conqueror of Shambala to have even a halfway decent conclusion.
