The Last gets funnier the more you look at it. Rewrite Naruto without his emotional intelligence, chalk up his complete disinterest in Hinata from day 1 at the academy through 19 years old up to him not understanding how he feels, remove Sasuke from the equation because he fills every role Hinata wants by being able to stand beside Naruto, make him smile and laugh, complete him as a complementary existence. Naruto going through genjutsu brainwashing, being scolded into responding to Hinata, confessing without a smile and with his headband on indicating village obligation. Compare to 5KS meeting Sasuke and making a pact to take on his hatred and die together while smiling.Also the fake flashbacks of Naruto having shadow clones half the age he gets the jutsu. Pure nonsense from beginning to end.

In comparison Naruto was afraid for Sasuke and wanted to end that match with Gaara. When Naruto actually cares about someone their safety comes before proving a point. Naruto also resists Hinata attempting to get close to him at the training grounds. She inquires and Naruto clams up, even reverting to his more emotionally closed off visual of squinting his eyes. He wasn't about to tell her that it was where Sasuke went out on a limb to attend to him despite the likelihood of punishment. In the war Naruto and Hinata hold hands while Neji is dead at their feet. Truly a macabre visual on how the chains of the Hyuga clan bind. Perhaps such a guilt trip was Neji's private joke.
