how do you decide which word is left untranslated? Like in HxH the Nen techniques En or Ken, which means circle and harden, are not translated, whereas in Naruto the different Ninjutsu are translated as Fire Style Fire Ball instead of just the Japanese words.As an ESL it's kinda odd to me.. It feels like the translator just assumes that reader knew certain Japanese words

Tora! yesterday (which is an American movie but has plenty of dialogue in Japanese) and it sometimes didn't even bother subbing Japanese dialogue. And when it did, not only did the subs not line up with how the character was speaking as much as you typically see in anime, but there were plenty of times where the subs were completely wrong. They felt like dubtitles. And this seems pretty common to me for live action film subs.
