And most of the "generic" town designs were done by Kadokawa and keep being reused in slightly altered form for other isekai towns, so blame them. Isekai anime adaptations that are not produced by Kadokawa tend to have a greater chance of having a great variety of unique landscapes for towns.

And obviously how Rapan (Lapan?) was a town built underneath the skeleton of a massive behemoth, so on... The anime did add its flair into some of the more "lowkey" towns and details, but the major cities/capitals are all pretty well described in the LN. I think S3 also has done a good job with this, which is why the background artist is such a GOAT. The Chaos Breaker had a lot of minor details that were included in the background drawings. Like how the first arch they go through has Zanoba pointing ou the dragon mark on it is similar to the one they found in Rudeus' house, and if you check the background in the anime it shows the mark right there. On the other hand, Chaos Breaker being basically a huge city and the floating island itself being that massive isn't something I quite remember, so the anime did some solo work there.

They are definitely more detailed than isekai towns are described on average, but there are still massive differences between having an actual illustration of a city by the LN artist (while in communication with the author) or not having it. Detailed texts give a good baseline on how to design it, but a detailed textual description of a fantasy city and an actual visual representation of that city are still very different and the latter still requires the city designer in the anime production to fill in the blanks regarding the aesthetics, especially in case of high-fantasy (and in sci-fi as well) where you can't just rely solely on historical reference material. So regardless of how detailed the textual description is in the WN/LN, it's still quite a big investment to create such a detailed city and most anime productions won't bother doing that.

The main thing though, for me, is that he could've done the usual route a lot of similar stories take which is make the world feel more like game stages where the cast goes into a location, does whatever objective they have there, beat some big boss then move on into an new location. Some stories have decent lore, have some worldbuilding info dump, but then do this shit, which makes the locations feel fake and just exist as a setting for whatever BS arc the author wants. On the other hand, MT did something a lot smarter, which is have the MC travel the world, set up each key location organically, then move on. Then revisit every single location with a lot more detail and allowing things to change from the previous visit. The plots themselves are things that were already hinted from the previous visits and a lot of things from before are brought back (why wouln't they?). This made the world actually feel like a world and not just game stages.

Ah and the surviving refugees of the other worlds poured in the human world thanks to a certain person.

Alright just watched the last 2 and a half seasons over the last week, can't believe how NOT edgy the show is considered all the discourse I heard about it prior to watching. On paper it seems like it'd be pretty bland but the execution is pretty top notch, the pacing in how they let things settle without dragging out (usually) and setting up things that pay off longer down the road in an organic way is really well done

I actually find it quite refreshing how grounded the fights in MT are for how much magic/superhuman bullshit is going on, most fights are decided before they begin and when they're not, it's usually only one or two mistakes that lead to defeat. Even the Orsted round 2 fight is pretty restrained while still feeling 'epic', they only exchange blows like 3 or 4 times throughout the entire fight. He does a really good job of making you feel the weight behind everything that happens, it doesn't ever feel like characters flying around trading blows forever for the sake of drawing out the scene.
