Okay, let me put it this way. Imagine there's a beautiful elf in a story, but she's specifically not for the protagonist. Like, she's beautiful, charming, elegant and so on...And completely uninterested in humans.
Then when an elf dude finally shows up, she hooks up with him. Realistically, that makes perfect sense, she's just along for the ride. But it's also de-protagonizing, that the hottest girl isn't interested in the main character.
It's like if Failure Frame (just an example) had Seras be a completely platonic friend to Touka, and mention "Oh yes, I'm waiting to return to ELFLAND to marry an ELF."
