There are a bunch of breadcrumbs that IMPLY she is lore important in some way, and she 'wins' Shinji in the end, but we never really get any fucking sense what her role in the plot or the world is during these movies.Perhaps the most infuriating part of the 15 year timeskip was that it mean that we skipepd over the bit where Mari would have had to actually introduce herself to Nerv/Wille, which would have obviously involved them asking who the fuck she was and having to get at least a satisfactory answer to that question. We never get that. And then movies 3 and 4 she basically doesn't appear in aside from during fights, where she is just talking to herself, so there's no room for character exploration or development there. Mari is character-shaped, but she isn't a character. Its borderline impossible to glean any information about who she is, what she wants, or what she would do in a given situation. And that means we don't understand her or her role in the story. In a franchise that is known for its nuanced and developed characters with their own inner worlds, Mari being a cardboard cutout sticks out like a sore thumb.

There is no deal.Original series+EoE (like most good art) is a result of people with good ideas getting lucky.Rebuilds (like most mediocre art) is a result of people with no good ideas not getting lucky.Mari is just the most obvious representation of the mediocrity of the rebuilds, because (unlike with Shinji/Asuka/Rei/etc) the viewer is unable to project the quality of those characters from the original series onto the characters in the rebuilds, nor are the rebuilds able to borrow ideas from the originals to make their characters (i.e. Mari) more compelling.
