A lot of their 'coming of age' bullshit plotline/stories involve having some fantasic or bizare adventure of a time as a teenager then accepting their cultural notion of being a 'member of society' and basically being an urban office drone, for some reason, for the rest of your life. Or at least giving up on whatever it was you were doing that was different, special or odd, including in some cases giving up on romances which are seen as abnormal. This is treated as the path to adulthood in a collectivist society.

Because stories are told to reinforce cultural mores.

There is nothing weird about this at all, the vast majority of us will have wild dreams in our childhood and throughout our teenage years, yet end up settling for the same thing everyone eventually years for, having a stable job and a loving family.
This is just the way life is

>you'll understand when you grow up
Translation: Old age has made you cowardly and entirely risk-averse.
