His name is Squealer!!
>>
>>290363286
I always thought what the anime would look like had it been told from Squealers perspective

Nothing would change but I think the audience would have infinitely less sympathy for the "humans" if they had the context from the start instead of it being slowly sprinkled as the series went on.
>>
Did nothing wrong.
>>
>>290363757
The Squealer petri-dish was sentient? What are you implying?
>>
>>290363841
He failed.
>>
>>290363841
he FAILED
>>
This story is so weirdly neutral the more I think about it, Squealer did nothing wrong and was right in trying to free himself and his kind from the tyranny imposed by those with powers.
But Saki and the society she lives in also feel like they did nothing wrong in a way, this felt like the only way they could find for humanity not to be wiped out by their kind, they did not cause the wars from centuries ago but they had to find an answer to avoid them.
I think keeping Squealer and his kind as slaves was the most immoral part of the whole arrangement, they should have either left them alone or exterminated them all
No one felt evil in this anime
>>
The single thing that I remember about this anime is that there was some forced faggotry in episode seven that made the board explode.
>>
>>290363989
It was so much tame compared to the shit you get today, not to mention it served a narrative purpose
I doubt anyone would care had the anime aired today
>>
>>290364025
I am not trying to make a point. The day the episode aired the board was nothing but shitposts about that. It was amusing.
>>
>>290364058
I know, I initially dropped it back then because of the homo shit as well, I only came around watching it in a rainy afternoon years later when I was bored.
It really is a great anime
>>
someone post the laughing_girls.jpg with squealer at the podium
>>
>>290363286
>Squealer believed all the casualties of his kind were worth it so their future could be better
>Human society believed the death and repression of normal humans was worth it so they could preserve their current society
It was kind of ironic how the humans behaved more like a colony than Squealer and his colony ever did, they were so preoccupied with survival and keeping the herd in place unlike Squealers very humane drive for change and evolution.
>>
Why was everyone in the story in love with Saki?
>>
>>290363817
The humans lacking context is important to them being sympathetic though.
>>
>>290364216
True, it was just a thought, I still think being presented the story from the human perspective makes it much better
>>
Kiroumaru > Yakomaru
>>
>>290364164
There is no "humane drive for change", people strive for personal comfort which can manifest as challenging disadvantageous systems as well as upholding advantageous ones.

I watched it completely blind last year and the gay stuff after the first timeskip really caught me off-guard, luckily years of 4chan use desensitized me enough to finish the anime
>>
>>290363974
That's the mark of good stories. If you need a villain instead of an antagonist then it's probably not a great story.
>>
>>290364249
Is this your personal belief or did you pulls this from the anime?
>>
stupid poo people
thinking they can stand alongside us, the specials, the only TRUE humans
i sentence you to suffer for ten thousand years
>>
Pretty sure Saki explains why they have to be gay in that very same episode.
>>
>>290364629
personal opinion, the story being told from Squealer’s side makes it seem too generic for a dystopian story in my opinion, but from the humans side and how "utopic" their society seems on the outside it feels like a better approach imo.
>>
>>290364914
Yeah. As a science fiction story it's pretty good and interesting. However the way it's told- revealing new information and peeling back layers elevates it quite a bit.
>>
>>290363286
>>290363974
>the only way they could find for humanity not to be wiped out by their kind
>the only way they could find for humanity not to be wiped out by humanity
>genetically modify real humans into molerats so the psychopathic telekinetics who need to be drugged/ conditioned into not destroying reality/ killing everyone around them for shits and giggles can survive
Raman-Klogius bros...are we the baddies?
>>290363989
it's the only way to stop these lunatics from murdering each other
>>
>>290363891
of course it was sentient. they explicitly made it sentient so that they could torture it.
>>
1. Squealer was right
2. Cantus users deserved an even greater genocide
3. Kuromarou was a beaten coward and a quisling

I will not be taking any questions.
>>
There's several layers to this anime and the most infuriating one is the realisation that human potential is vast but it will never be realised even halfway through because of the ineptitude and stubbornness of the worthless majority
>>
>What if everyone with powers turns out to be a psychopathic, mass murdering rapist?
Damn, riveting philosophical scenario.
>>
>>290363286
Saki's smile when she was still ignorant and innocent.
>>
>>290365791
Nothing changes once she learns the truth though, she still lives on with her life and perpetuates the same system
>>
why didn't the society genetically engineer Death Feedback into powerless humans as well, so that ordinary humans would also be biologically incapable of intentionally killing other humans? is this not the logical move?
>>
I remember my friend making me watch this with her. Literally what did she mean by this?
>>
>>290365867
Everything about this show is contrived>>290365578
>>
>>290365867
Had they done this they would stop being feared and worshiped, they would become just average humans who happen to have some pretty nice party tricks, their entire society is not just built on a way to stop bloodshed, it was built so as to enslave the majority of people
if they lose the ability to inflict violence upon normal humans then they lose their control over them, which is the reason I laugh when people like >>290363974 think there is any moral equivalence between Squealer and the monsters he was fighting.
>>
>>290365578
I've always considered the story to be a bit of an allegory to today's world and mass shootings. It's Psycho Pass-esque, if you will.

>rapist
?

>>290365889

>>
>>290365954

Read the history of the cantus users. From the first lock picking serial rapist to the mass raping cactus biker gangs and emperors.
>>
>>290365990

>>
I just find it funny the entire premise the sex stuff was based on bad research. Bonobos are only like that towards other bonobos, they're incredibly vicious towards other kinds of primates.
>>
>>290366007
How does that contradict the anime? Cantus users are also extremely vicious towards others
>>
>>290365578
It's not "what if they all are", the danger is if literally 1 is. Didn't the very first awakened psychic wipe out like half of Tokyo before the military brought him down?
>>
>>290366040
Because the research at the time thought bonobos fucked as a form of conflict resolution (which is why its baked into the cantus users). That turned out to be dead wrong.
>>
>>290366048
No. IIRC the very first psychic could only move objects. It was the lock picking serial rapist that starts off the backlash against cantus users.
>>
Can I just say that I hate how this anime looks? I don't think I've ever seen a shadeless, more flat-colored anime ever to the point that it had to be intentional.
>>
>no humans cant use powers against other humans because brain washing!
>uhh just steal a baby and raise it like a savage to get around it
i could have killed everyone in this world because i think everyone is a faggot
>>

It was definitely intentional, and I like it that way, it gives it a more unique look

>>
I remember watching this weekly with /a/.
Loved the show but the anon who kept comparing the queer-rat war stuff to lotr really overhyped it, at least in the way they ended up adapting it. The QUALITY also really didn't help.
>>
>>290365578
I won't blame you for misremembering the premise since it was a long time ago.
Most psi users weren't psychos, the whole problem was that it takes one single crazy fucker to start a disaster.
They thought that the only way to avoid huge disasters while remaining as superior psi users that dominates the origial humans was this stupid system.
>>
>>290363286
And he is HUMAN!
>>
>>290370314
Counter argument most depictions of cantus users post collapse almost universally is about them being rapist mass murderers. The only (somewhat) sane cantus user group were the scientists.

>Government controlling history
>Nazi-level eugenistic control for children failures
>Higher-ups pushing LGBTQY+ for population control
>Stupid thought gun control system that ends up causing mass murder shooting because everyone else becomes vulnerable
>Tyranny level so high that the villain communists commits mass murder and still end up getting sympathy because it was the only one that revolted
>>
>>290370938
They should adapt more proper novels instead of LN slop.
>>
>>290370938
So it was an unholy mix of our current extreme left and extreme right.
>>
>>290363286
Reminder that any hope of a resurgence of anything resembling a human society died with his revolution. The nature of the cantus users totalitarian society, along with the fact that their mere existence keeps fucking up the rest of the world, means that preserving their gay little orwellian village as long as they can is the best they can hope for.
>>
>>290363286
This anime gives me a strange feeling like nostalgia but not exactly, like things used to be better in childhood knowing they will change , ignoring the horrific points. The Dvorshak 9th largo now triggers that same feeling. Havent seen anything that had a similar effect
>>
>>290371173
Their society is quite literally unsustainable on the long run, they have to keep their numbers low and keep tabs on every single child born just to avoid a psychopath emerging, it only takes 1 fiend to end them all
>>290370938
dystopian stories lend themselves to whichever ideology you dislike, which is the reason every single person keeps quoting 1984 to make a point regardless of their politics

Saki and the people living in the village were not responsible for the crimes of their ancestors, and the system they cultivated is necessary otherwise their village would get wiped out by a fiend.
Believing Saki is in the wrong is the same as blaming white people for colonialism

Abe-san? It's you?
>>
>>290374442

It's really not. There would be numerous ways to deal with a single fiend every now then which are not at all explored in the show. You could get around the attack inhibition with indirect fire for example.
>>
>>290374632
no you could not, attack inhibition works on intent
>>
>>290374672
Saki almost gets killed when a random kid throws giant boulders at her, thinking she's a rat. You could use similar tactics with a spotter.

No, they're responsible for their own many crimes and atrocities.

The events of the show clearly demonstrate that this is a profoundly flawed system that produces fiends
>Believing Saki is in the wrong is the same as blaming white people for colonialism

This anime (light novel) did one thing extremely well that I don't see mentioned often enough.
At the beginning, it showcased a horror story from the perspective of the children with adults as the monsters. At the end, it managed to show a horror story from the perspective of the adults, with a child as the monster.
Also it's crazy that the protagonist's story ends with her raising children-killing cat monsters that she feared as a kid.
>>
>>290373563
It is also explained in the anime but people don't fucking pay attention to the setting
>>
>>290374990

haha already felt old with 20, not so much physically but mentally, in retrospective and in relation to the show I recognize and understand the changes in myself and society, even if I don't like them, kinda like saki herself and with the Ningen final solution. Being aware of those changes and the longing for rusted-golden past times triggers that sensation, also by watching the leaves fall or seeing my face reflected in the screen after a show finishes. I don't know , many other shows made think about life and shit, usually from an intended moralizing angle , but not as a collateral efect existential side like this one did
>>
>>290375083

You could say Saki isn't in the wrong, but it is vexing to see how she went from being a rebel who wanted to bring down the village's oppressive system in the first half, to then watch her becoming just another part of it in the second half.
She definitely isn't a likeable protagonist, but then again no character in this anime is very likeable or hateable, and that's what makes this show so unique.

She lost thats what the anime is about she fucking lost its over she fell in line like a good girl she married a faggot and now she has an office job this is the story of every middle aged unhappy sour cunt and there's way too many of them around they're all exhausted, bitter, there's no fight left in them and there's no hope left in their eyes while they delude themselves that they'll do things differently because now they learned that yada yada the old cunt before her was like her and now she's the new old cunt married to a faggot and it's her turn to kill children.
>>
>>290381134
>its over she fell in line
she was predestined to fall in line since meeting the hag, she told her to her face that she wants her to succeed her precisely because of how unfazed and accepting she was despite hearing the brutal truth of their society, Saki was never a hero

I'll always love the way Shinsekai yori is directed. I think it's about as good as it gets for a lower budget show. Lots of great minds behind this project, like Shigeyasu Yamauchi.
The subconscious and supernatural blending into reality; the way history is told like a macabre fairy tale; silhouettes and shadows depicting things humanity is meant to fear. Even the hues of the sky are used as a storytelling device. Very striking visuals overall.
