So I finished this and thought it was a pretty heart-warming show, is the sequel really that bad? I'm kind of content leaving it like in all honesty.

My all time favorite, one of the absolute best. Don't touch any of the sequel material.

the sequel is extremely bad. the movies are like, not even the same canon. you can and should probably just stop now.
>>
>>290374420
Don't bother with the sequels anon
But if you really have time in your hands there is Ao(the actual sequel but its bad but full of fan service for the original show tho) and Hi Evolution movies (that's like a retelling but different timeline shit)

how's the pacing? does it take forever for shit to start happening

Let me break it to you.
The movie reveal that the entire original series you just finished was one of Eureka's dream as a coping mechanism after she accidentally killed Renton.
>>

Leave E7 here. For the love of god, don't watch anything else with the E7 name on it.

Here's what you need to know: E7 was originally supposed to have a tragic, angsty, bittersweet ending. But when the staff got to the last arc of E7, they felt it no longer fit and the head writer was forced to change the ending to the much more optimistic one we got, which fans loved.

Every single spinoff, sequel, or side story related to E7 is that head writer SEETHING that he was forced to write a happy ending, and either rewriting the story to be more angsty or lashing out at fans for "incorrectly" enjoying the positive ending that he didn't want to write.

I am not exaggerating when I say that if you liked the way the show ended and the message of the show, the writer of all of the sequels actively hates you and wants to cause you pain. Watching any E7 spinoff of sequel is basically just you opting-in to get trolled.
I cannot stress enough that I am 100% serious about this, and that this is not a joke.
>>
>>290374420
>is the sequel really that bad?
No
Its worse. Whatever your expectations, they are worse.
>>
>>290374420
There are no sequels, there are no movies, there are no spinoffs, the 50 episodes of the anime are it.
>>
Sex with Eureka.
Is this acceptable?
>>
>>290378386
Showing that would be part of a better sequel.
>>
It's hilarious just how vehement and consistent the "don't fucking touch anything after the series" sentiment is every time this comes up. It must be one of the things /a/ is most unified on.
>>
>>290379831
Objective truth is pretty rare, but sometimes you end up with something so blatant that only actual psychopaths would disagree with it.
I actually wonder how E7 even got as many sequels as it did. Was there a market for this sort of cynical misery porn int he E7 fanbase in Japan? Or did the writer just have that much pull at Bones that they could force through these projects even without anyone who asked for it? One bad sequel is a wild misstep, but it happened too many times to make any sense.
>>
>>290379831
I also think you should not watch anything that came out after the original code geass show.
>>
>>290380170
That seems reasonable. Season 2 had its weaknesses compared tot he first one, but its ending is what saves the show and anything that seeks to follow up that ending can only dilute it.
>>
>>290380170
I disagree with yo

The only other piece of Eureka Seven content I consider decent is New Wave/New Vision games and its short prologue manga. I still cannot believe to this day that they managed to go after the main hero and heroine from the games in the movie as well.
>>
>>290379831
it's funny that basically the same thing happened to another bones show in Darker than Black, but only for S2 and not the OVA
>>
>>290380821
>I still cannot believe to this day that they managed to go after the main hero and heroine from the games in the movie as well.
That felt genuinely mean-spirited. Like, why? And making them like that?
>>
>>290380836
Was DtB S2 actually that bad? I watched the first season ages ago but never got around to watching the second, I only know it by its despised reputation.

Obvious the E7 continuations have earned their radioactive status, but I'm wondering if DtB S2 is really as awful as people say or was it just a matter of expectations being too high after the first season?
>>
>>290380821
>they managed to go after the main hero and heroine from the games in the movie as well.
story? only seen the OG series, haven't played the games or seen the movies
>>
>>290381476
It's fine if there was nothing else before it. It's not great as a sequel.
>>
>>290379831
I watched AO.
As a stand alone anime that you can watch while literally thinking its on the same complexity level of kodomo anime its alright, but my god its an absolutely shitshow if you tried to tie it to the original, I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone ever because its so shit if you tried to think about it for more than 5 seconds.
>>
>>290374420
No, in fact Astral Ocean was an improvement and Pocketful of Rainbows was better than both. Hi-Evolution had technical issues with aspect ratios.
>>
>>290375640
I've seen Hi-Evolution, this did not happen. Re ton never died, he got separated into another dimension.
>>
Astral Ocean was the TLJ of its time. It's that bad. The movies are all shit for similar reasons, too.
These days there are so many series/franchises where the original is literally the only good aspect of it and EVERY attempt to revisit the world is abjectly terrible - but it wasn't always the case, and back then E7 was almost unique in how bad its extra entries were, relative to the quality of the original.

There is only the original 50-episode anime series. It is excellent and also the only good thing with the name "Eureka Seven" on it. Literally ignore anything else, pretend it doesn't exist and you'll be a happier person for it.

The story is actually much more mundane and gay than you could ever imagine - the director of the original 50 episode run wanted to take the anime in a direction closer along the lines of the manga, whereas a non-trivial portion of the production team wanted to go down the route you are more familiar with, which is the classic, feel-good love story/happily ever after ending we get.
Something something "I want to be like Gen Urobuchi and run the classic Japanese tragedy but my studio won't let me"
I'm being extremely reductive but that's the gist of the situation. And given the riotous success of the original production, our director friend never lived it down and seethes about it to this day, forever pumping out trash that tries to undermine/cancel/ridicule the original's execution and premise of the ending/love story.

And that's it.
>wahhhh I didn't get what I wanted so I'm going to shit on the work's legacy out of spite, forever.
Any artistic, design, or musical value the "sequels" have is entire coincidental at best, and most likely entirely as a result of the rest of his team - people who actually like the source material.

Sounds like a case of the guy being convinced that he had a much better idea than he really did, and the rest of the production team saved him from himself and he never got over it.
Looking at his filmography, he's been a part of a lot of great projects but only ever in charge of E7 related ones. You'd think that if he was held back by his team from his masterful vision, he would have moved on and made something more in line with his aims on some other work instead of returning to the E7 well and undermining his own past success.
>>
>>290384684
He keeps saying that stuff was 'derived from worldbuilding' as a dismissal, which sounds a lot like one of the other writers with a clearer idea of what the project actually was really came up with most of the setting, world, and themes. I want to know who THAT guy was, and what else they've done since.

Correct. He's similar to George Lucas in that respect - he has talent, skill and ability, but can't be left to his own devices or his own vision blinds him to more obvious problems/solutions. And as he's a director, his ego never allowed him to heal from this slight.

Correct, that's exactly how it went down.
>I want to know who THAT guy was, and what else they've done since
The people you are looking for are Dai Sato, the script writer, and Kenichi Yoshida, character design.

>>290375640
grim
no wonder this show had no staying power despite being such a hit on release

The director wanted to give it a bad ending, the rest of the staff reigned him in and said no, then he spent every sequel shitting on the franchise out of spite.

Let's just say the creator crashed out and went bat shit insane due to his spats with Bones, like holy fuck did he lose his shit.

Why did they make Eureka ugly in the second half?
