He learns to accept there are people he just can't ever be friends with, and when circumstances do allow him to make friends with certain people he otherwise never dreamed of befriending, he's learned enough about them to know how to form trust with them, instead of just spamming "be my friend" like he does at the start.People may say he regresses back into his old character habits after seeming to grow out of them, but when you look closely, it's actually him regaining some of his strengths that he lost (his youthful optimism) and combining them with strengths he gained later (his wisdom and experience). In the end, he's able to stop fights before they even start, only resorting to force when he knows words aren't enough.

Mashima considered leaving it a mystery that readers could figure out themselves, but then the chapter count issue happened and he had it in his back pocket, so he figured now was the perfect time to use it.I say the padding makes the final battle all the better for it, though if Mashima really wanted to leave it a mystery, I'd have preferred it if he instead brought Void back for a last-ditch second wind and better fill us in on his backstory and motivations, which we got a bit of, but it left us with more questions than answers.
