Motoko this ep:anyway good episode, set up for the last two I imagine. It was nice to have a mostly more relaxed episode. It is funny how bad this looks for section 9 and Motoko. As far as people are concerned they just climbed onto a boat, possibly even a correctly chartered one, and domed two people they didn't know had guns and then another one Major saw was reaching, but you wouldn't be able to tell from the angle of the camera because of the jacket. Aramaki's 'oh fuck, oh shit, oh fuck' reaction was fun.I'm gonna be mildly sad when this series is over anons but at least we'll have another entry in 'almost unmitigatedly good short series to recommend to others'. 2026 ain't so bad.
>>290445699>what will Motoko do now that she is public enemy number 1?Actually, why did she shoot that girlyboy? Don't say it was because he was reaching for a weapon, that kid was like 4 feet away from the Major and a 2/10 on the threat scale at most. I am not even talking morality, they specifically wanted him alive for interrogation and probably not the nice kind. Earlier, the Major went as far as hacking a Tachikoma and Togusa to keep them from killing a suspect they wanted to interrogate, said suspect was actively shooting at a movement restricted Major with a submachine gun while she was in the open. I don't think this was an "I feared for my life, I had no choice" situation.
>>290450586
>>290450586>Actually, why did she shoot that girlyboy?not having read the manga, I assume it has something to do with the puppetmaster hijacking her brain. Maybe PM has a stronger survival instinct, or she thinks lower of human life as she does her own
So Puppet Master is just another AI? Why did he say otherwise? He was obviously conscious/self-aware from the start. In the manga I got the idea it was simply an algorithm/program that accumulated enough data.
>>290450586>>290450638I completely assumed that Motoko killed the twink because she is slipping. That it was an act of incompetence, just like the way she's sitting there afterwards, looking around wildly.
>>290444541It, and other megamachines they were showing, are from Pandora.
>>290450929>So Puppet Master is just another AI?The difference between AI and humans is that only humans have ghosts which more or less means soul, they can't fully define it but they can detect it in humans and not AI. The Puppet Master developed a detectable ghost which should have been impossible based on what they know about AI.>He was obviously conscious/self-aware from the start. That is not the dividing line between AI and humanity in this world, the Fuchikoma are conscious/self-aware, probably the Operators too and a bunch of other AI's in that world but they are still just property that adhere to their programmed tasks. When a regular AI gets fed up, goes rogue and rebels without a ghost they seem to turn feral like in picrel. This implies that consciousness and self-awareness is not enough for true freewill which is what Puppet Master obtained. I suspect the Fuchikoma are developing a ghost too, the GitS world probably has a fast approaching debate on AI rights coming as more AI gain ghosts.
>>290451260It's actually very confusing because the Fuchikoma are extremely and obviously sentientThe discussion doesn't seem to be like, say, Data in Star Trek. It's literally about magic. In the GITS universe a Soul Detector is apparently just a thing that exists, and none of them fuss over it too much because who gives a shit about fancy things that got figured out and invented years ago? How often do you think about microprocessors?
>>290450586>>290450638>>290450929The Puppet Master hasn't hijacked her brain, but she's essentially brute-forcing her way out of S9 by making herself someone they more or less have to cut loose to save face to the point where she and Batou are prepared to have her death faked so she can start a new life for herself.
>>290446618The manga is good, it simply doesn't translate well to anime when done like this. Watching this series really doesn't capture the same feeling as reading the manga did. Maybe this adaptation is simply crap. The boring BGM doesn't lend it any favours. At least we finally got an art style reminiscent of the manga to be animated.
>>290451260But did he rise as a gestalt from the sea of info on the net or was he already like that in the lab? The scene we got this episode implies he was made with a ghost.
>>290445699this wasn't the only Major ass we got this episode.
TOTALOSHIIFAGDEATH
>>290451612>>290445699this show is so ass
>>290451546It's just pacing. The Art of Filler really has to be applied to these straight 1 for 1 adaptations to work really well. Ironically, something like Dragon Ball Z is a master class in that. Outright entire filler arcs aside, every common interaction and scene in the manga is subtly padded out. A few extra lines and tension here and there sprinkled in. It works well. So are fight scenes, and I don't mean power up sequences being a bit too gratuitous. Consider this, the manga only had 15 pages a chapter. That's wack. And it's why Kai sucked. It's not that the mangas are bad, but reading a comic is a different level of interaction. You can sit there absorbing the page for as long as you see fit.
>>290451612お尻大好きです!

>>290445699Did she really try to suffocate Puppet Master with her ass?
>>290451260This might be either out of the scope of the show, or a "keep watching retard" question, but>the Fuchikoma are conscious/self-aware, probably the Operators too and a bunch of other AI's in that world but they are still just property that adhere to their programmed tasks. When a regular AI gets fed up, goes rogue and rebels without a ghost they seem to turn feral like in picrel>consciousness and self-awarenessComing from shows like Astro Boy and various mecha anime where it's either implied, hinted, hoped, or outright explained to you that "robots are basically people"... is that the case here for our robots? The tachikomas seemed pretty conscious and self-aware, the operators not so much in initial episodes and so I didn't feel horrid about one short-circuiting or exploding... but now I'm a bit worried and sad about her and I hope she's okay. If Astro Boy had some friend running around in the Gitsverse and he told me that he doesn't have free will because the laws of robotics prevents him from killing and eating people, I'd still consider him as a friend just like humans. I mean, the tachikomas are our friends... right? Also, for ghost barriers, I take it from today's episode that it's something closer to "a natural barrier between souls except we don't like talking about souls" rather than any device or created thing?
>>290451612No nipples?
>>290451520Can you blame her?She was practically born in to a cyborg shell and raised to be a glowie. There's a reason she asks if she isn't just an AI they fed a backstory. It's understandable something like SAC changed her character and background. You need to reconfigure her to be more or less content or accepting of her circumstances if you don't want her skipping town eventually. And make her a bit more professional on the job.Yeah, frankly, I would start wondering if there's a difference in me and an AI too.
>>290451546This sort of thing usually goes >Machines don't have souls.>I'm a machine and I have a soul.>You can't prove that.>No. But can you prove that humans have a soul?>Oh shit, I hadn't thought of that.Shirow didn't want to write that kind of story so he invented the ghost to say humans have souls and machines don't--Deal with it.Anyway, if creating an AI with a ghost was something that could be done the programmers wouldn't have been shocked when it started acting like someone with a ghost. But it does raise the question of where and when the ghost came from. And that's the whole point of the story. Also, would it still have gotten a ghost if it was written in Rust or is Python a requirement? What if it used GTK instead of Qt?
>>290446787That's not her resting bitch face, that's her sneering at Nakamura. She is the Kundry to his Klingsor, she wants to be free of his pimp hand.
>>290452027If I remember, at one point 2501 wonders if she might be a chunk of someone else's ghost.I mean if Section 6 have access to the Channeling Agency too, it's not impossible, but that would mean she was never truly an AI.Still unlikely. What matters is that SHE WANTS A BIG ASS TOO.women amirite?
>>290451882No she got her shell when she was like 12 and it's not like having a backstory would help her perform better at her job. Quite the opposite.now, ARISE Motoko, that's another story.
>>290451554see>>290452133I'll add that there's a difference between AWARENESS and SELF-AWARENESS. Being conscious doesn't mean you're fully aware of your own consciousness and its limitations. I remember that kicked in when I was like 6.By the same logic, she might have been sentient all along but only became sapient after doing a lot of computing and connecting to other sapient minds. Getting a glimpse of the Net maybe. But that's just speculation, the point is it's not impossible.
>>290452133Channeling Agency?
>>290452246yeah they unfortunately didn't mention them in the previous episode. They're the official branch of the administration where psychics do their thing.I don't think they'll ever adapt MMI, because the Channeling Agency are very relevant to it. They collaborate with Motoko to unfuck the karmic balance of the world basically. There's also the Imperial Household Psychics but they never show up, they're just mentioned in the manga in passing.

I don't really understand who this new series is for. Oldfag here watching it, and I haven't hated my time with it, but I'm left thinking the episodes feel too short and we're just retreading familiar ground. Also, I want to see more Section 9 working as a unit. Paz, Borma, Saito, and Ishikawa are all there but usually just in the background or doing very little as a cohesive unit. Is their intention to stick to just Motoko, Batou, Togusa (sometimes?), and Aramaki? Then why bother with the others at all? Is their intention to nurture the unit cohesion? Then why have them be an operating unit before being branded as Section 9 at the series start?

>>290451716Yeah I agree, and I've seen japs say it on xitter as well. The manga is kind of episodic aside from the ningyoutsukai stuff and science saru didn't handle that well compared to stuff like SAC or Bebop
>>290453624Going out on a limb a bit but..Classic anime has filler by necessity. It's only when you have the leisure of a panel for panel adaptation that it becomes obvious why that's a bad idea. The pacing issue is otherwise fixed by sheer coincidence. By mistake.Well, filler also tends to help pad out characterization a bit where mangaka are often one-man-shows that don't have the staff to pad out conversations or add character moment.

>>290454964Anon, time is not free, the episodes are already jam packed and their run time is can't be extended because they are also for broadcast. Inserting a new scene means either cutting one out or pushing content to the next episode and since episodes need to have a satisfying conclusion, that isn't easy either. We had one mostly filler episode and even if we didn't, that doesn't mean that time can be inserted willy nilly. All this mind you to solve something that only some people believe is a problem. >>290447937Motoko Kusanagi, after merging with the Puppet Master, wanted to evolve the human race to the next level, but didn't understand how to. She didn't know what was the best plan and her creativity only extended so far.She created a series of daughters or clones that each was similar to her but distinct and then sent those off into the wild to find their own paths and ideas. She would periodically harvest these daughters for their schemes and plans and then determine whether they were better than her own. Motoko Aramaki, our protagonist and one of these daughters, manages to track down Kusanagi because Kusanagi was pirating her company's resources for experiments. We learn that Kusanagi worked with one of her daughters, Antares, to monitor the others like Motoko Aramaki from a distance, without revealing herself. Spica is another daughter that works with Antares to help process detained daughters to see of they should be absorbed, discarded, or otherwise. After encountering a certain file in Motoko Aramaki's data base, they are shocked at its contents and pass her through to the real Motoko Kusanagi. What the finale itself focused on was two things. First, that Motoko Kusanagi now basically lives at the heart of the Net (a mix of psychic energy and cyberspace) as a native, and that file Motoko Aramaki found early on in the story but didn't really seem to understand. The one she picked up while beating those pirates. What that file contained was a plan for a novel form of life based on silicon chemistry, natively merging software and biological functions rather than requiring an adapter like a E-Brain or a computer. This fascinated both Motoko Kusanagi and Motoko Aramaki. They agreed to work on creating this new life together. Motoko Aramaki literally heads up to outer space to meet Motoko Kusanagi in person to do it.
>>290447937>>290456293At the very end, Tamaki Tamai, that channeller that was following around Motoko Aramaki, tracks Motoko Kusanagi down at the heart of the Net, where time and space are warped and don't happen in strict sequence. She can see Kusanagi be reborn as a cyborg empowered with the spirit of the actual Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, can see Kusanagi have sex, fight for her life, or go through crises of identity all at the same time. Tamai can see it as Motoko Kusanagi and Motoko Aramaki head to the heart of the Net and ascend the Pillar of Heaven/World Tree that exists in its core to begin weaving that silicon life into being. Essentially acting as Goddesses (hence the overt parallels to Shinto creation myths). She can see as the tree splits and diverges in two directions, as the silicon life is linked to its own Net that exists separately from humanity's. The concept links to the idea of the universe going through phases linked to the 3 Sacred Regalia of Japan. 2000 years ago it was a Jewel Millennium connected to the Magatama, that led to a boom in religious evolution. 1000 years ago it was a Sword Millennium linked to the Kusanagi, an era of technology and violence. Now in the year 2000 AD, it is a Mirror Millennium, which was the most mysterious of all, and implies new forms of life. In this the Motoko's and their nature as a contrarian that always goes their own ways, but also as women that doesn't fall to nihilism but stays focused on both reality and her own motivation to advance, imprints on the silicon life they're creating.
So the old memes about the puppetmaster being a gamer girl were true after all...Like it's not just intellectual math shit like the Game of Life, she straight-up plays RTSWhat a world.
>>290456293>They agreed to work on creating this new life together. Motoko Aramaki literally heads up to outer space to meet Motoko Kusanagi in person to do it.Hmm incest much?
>>290449093GITS fanart is single-handedly hard carried by one Taiwanese Lesbian that loves Motoko more than you love your mother.
>>290456381Not sure she's a lesbo, though, she draws a lot of Batou x Motoko, it's very wholesome and based.
>>290450586I think the Puppet Master has a far stronger self-preservation instinct than Motoko does. Motoko will risk her life to get a job done, but the Puppet Master will abandon a risky job if it keeps it alive. Motoko would take the risk of wounding the perp in order to complete her assigned duty. The Puppet Master doesn't take risks.
>>290455209
The puppetmaster pov scenes are anime original right?
>>290456433It's a bit more complicated now that she's dead, but let's just say she's more of a planner than Motoko. But make no mistake, Motoko is obsessed with survival too, and she also has contingency plans, it's just that she's very impulsive, if that wasn't obvious, and relies on adaptation, which is why 2501 likes her. That and her ass.
>>290455059>it kinda didif it was just e-whores then no, it didn't.
>>290456422I think some people in Taiwan speak Cantonese, but maybe she's just Chinese instead.
>>290456667some models too, didn't you see all those runway shows circa 2018?plenty of high-cut girls, stunners too.
>>290455175if you carefully peruse my post, you'll find nothing you said is in conflict with what I saidthat said, I also think the pacing, while not terrible, could be betterthe manga is very dense and as a result the anime scenes rarely have room to breatheI am conscious of broadcast limitations, but even so splitting the stories across episodes like they've been doing feels clunkyit's like the anime can't decide if it wants to be episodic or noton the other hand, maybe it's what makes this anime specialI also thought the previous episode was marvellous, the one with 2501 deep divethe whole thing was sublime, like a spiritual experience, or hypnosis
>>290456717oh I'm sure she likes girls, what I mean is she's """lesbian""" like the Major, not a full-on turbodyke
>>290456742>it's like the anime can't decide if it wants to be episodic or notNeither could the manga, lol.

>>290457183also shown in some little omake he made around 1990.There are a couple of tiny references to terraforming and nanomachines in Junk Jungle. Not in the dialogue itself but like, in the advertisements. So Shirow had that in mind for a long time.
>>290456293>>290456327Ah okay
>>290457335some anons speculate that this is supposed to foreshadow bioroids in Appleseed, I find it believable given that some artbooks allegedly mention Gaia as a creation of Motoko or her daughters.
>>290457335It isn't super easy to get, but you really do just have to carefully read every dialog bubble in the latter few chapters of the story. The issue mainly is that the first half basically teaches you to ignore half the text because its all nonsense technobabble and then at the end every word matters a lot.
>>290457727The other big issue is that you cannot rely on any character's appearance to deduce who they are.For example I thought that Antares and Spica were other channelers or unrelated characters rather than Cosmic Seeds like Motoko Aramaki. Because there are so many girls with the same face as Motoko in this manga that it's impossible to tell for sure if you're dealing with a Motoko or not until it's been explicitly confirmed. And most characters appear under at least three different appearances and use a bunch of proxies.
>>290454964As the one who originally brought up DBZ having a shitload of microfiller people don't realize is filler at all...Anon is still correct. Time is not free. Noting we don't know how negotiating this series went or what was on the table, but time is not free. Even if you say you only get 50% more series for it, or a humble 25% more, that's money and time to produce it. And the adjusted pacing also alters episode planning. You'd need to figure out which events to split up in to multiple episodes. It's strictly better if you can do it, but that's an ideal. Not a reality. It all comes down to resource investment in the end. Time, money, talent? All the same thing. Also the simple fact that just investing more in something doesn't assure quality. It's NOT a given. Which adds an additional layer of risk for changing something you already know will work. Changing it just to change it is bad planning. Unwise. And frankly, as the Ur-Example, DBZ's original production crew was full of star talent. They made it work cause they were talented.
>>290451260Hey let's not forget about the Puma TwinsNot only are they fully sapient, they're also autonomous. It was very silly of 2501 to think she'd get political asylum just because she's sentient.

>>290456381Man, this is a really great compromise between super cute girl and something more down to earth in design.
>>290458143Why have an internal monologue when you can have a dialogue with your twin?Saves up on processing power. Now THAT's smart engineering. Section 6's little nugget girl could NEVER. Also she's flat.
>>290458145I agree, I think it's entirely disconnected from anything relateable. The only characters I gave a shit about in MMI were the secondary ones, like the cop girl or the chief of security.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaQ083rNUwc
>>290453054to be fair we do see them work as a unit a lil bit in episode 1. togusa and batou get most of the action besides motoko herself. i'm afraid in a show with just 10 episodes there's just no time to give other characters a chance to shine.in SAC ishikawa gets more screentime doing investigative research, sometimes borma, too. saito is the super-sniper of the team and has his moments. but paz got literally nothing except 1 episode about a crazy ex trying to chase him down and kill him. borma gets a handful of scenes showing up at crime scenes to take inventory of wtf happened, that's it.tl;dr motoko, batou, togusa and aramaki matter the most in that order. everyone else is filler.
>>290458075>Hey let's not forget about the Puma TwinsYeah, they seem to have avoided rampancy somehow. Is DTP set before or after Ghost in the Shell?>It was very silly of 2501 to think she'd get political asylum just because she's sentient.I think she was hoping to play Sections 6 and 9 against each other since frequently Section 9 targets government corruption. Almost all of her crimes were committed under Section 6's orders including the stuff in Ep 2 and 3 which is a pretty good legal defense for someone owned by them. It just needs to stay in Section 9's custody long enough to convey this and offer to turn evidence on Foreign Ministries shady dealings. This is why Section 6 was so desperate to get her that they immediately attacked Section 9 HQ to retrieve her before she could talk. They were so scared that they even tried to kill Aramaki and then blew up 2501's body when they were about to be caught. It actually wasn't that terrible a plan, 2501 just underestimated how cornered Section 6 felt, they were willing to do anything to retrieve her even if it meant open war with a Section that heavily outgunned them.
>>290458836Like Motoko seeing the Puppet Master become a true Ghost, she's basically had a religious revelation first hand.
>>290459009She's a channeler. Why the FUCK would any of this be news to her?

>>290459008>Is DTP set before or after Ghost in the Shell?Extremely unclear, might be an alternate timeline>I think she was hoping to play Sections 6 and 9 against each other since frequently Section 9 targets government corruptionRight, so the idea was to give Aramaki a flimsy excuse to investigate then. Probably should have spilled the beans right away but I guess that wasn't easy when strapped down to a table with 220V running through your ass
>>290459067Its not every fucking day that you see the creation of a new type of life, is it?
>>290459084the mechabare in this episode was INSANE
>>290459167Fair enough. Motoko's incredibly nonchalant tone, combined with the fact that we never see what that type of life looks like, made it seem trivial to me, a real dud of a final reveal. But I guess Tamaki would be able to see how it all pans out so it'd be a lot more exciting for her.
>>290459009That doesn't seem to account for the technician's confused reaction.
>>290453054All the censorship pretty much confirm that it was made for the western market, but nobody is buying the technobabble, they should have included the major to Fornite prior to this anime...

>>290459838yeah around 2015 I think.they replaced a bunch of aircrafts with CGIadded a bunch of hologramsmade everything glow yellow (which completely fucks up the color symbolism of the original release)dubbed the Puppetmaster with a female voice (that I can get behind, but it still fucks up a lot of cultural references)

>>290449531Unironically, its the jews at it again.
>>290459907>they replaced a bunch of aircrafts with CGIThis series has a weird love of crappy 3D, the original had it for a map which was inoffensive. The 2004 movie Innocence is full of it and most of it sucks, especially the PS2 tier aircraft. GitS Stand Alone Complex S1 intro has it and it looks awful. The "remastered" the 95 movie with it, no one was happy. It finally culminated with the full 3D SAC_2045 which is where I like to think they finally understood that everyone wants them to fuck the hell off with that shit.

>>290460951Man, the 80's OVA was my first exposure to Dominion and the beginning/ending made me think the manga was gonna have a cool sci-fi conspiracy plot. I was pretty disappointed when I read the manga and found the story to be half-baked. The book kinda reads like you're flipping through someone's high-school notebook and they have these really elaborate doodles that sometimes have a continuation and sometimes shit just gets dropped, and sometimes it's cool action and sometimes its just random gags or lore dumps about background characters. There's a lot that doesn't culminate into anything.Did anyone else get this feeling?>>290461062Lotsa great gifs.
>>290461258With Dominion yes, but Dominion Conflict knocks it out the park, I love it.Phantom of the Audience is just gags, I like gags.
I'm experiencing Fuchikoma withdrawal syndrome.
>>290461313sorry pal, that's it for them
>>290461307Yeah, Conflict was perfect. Eternally pissed there's no more. Phantom of the Audience was also great. It's not that I have a problem with gags or a more lighthearted story, the original Dominion just throws me for a loop with what it feels like it's trying to do, where it's going to go, how it expects you to read it and what it's trying to make you feel. I don't even dislike it, it's just feels like you're reading a senile person's mind.
M-66 F-6 did it first!
>>290461138Yeah I did like Leona more in New Dominion, her being spicier and more hotblooded than in the first OVA was fun. In the first Dominon OVA I was pretty interested in where things were going with Buaku's past but it just fizzled out in large part due to just being 4 episodes. Also wasn't very impressed in New Dominion how we're supposed to believe Leona really cared for her motorcycle cop partner but there's barely anything properly shown besides some very brief random flashbacks to back this up. There was a bit of something with the weapons sales conspiracy plot but that also kinda had a lackluster conclusion. I think maybe what I wasn't liking much about the OVAs is that they sorta felt like they were straddling between light-hearted villain of the week and trying to have a bigger plot with limited success, I think they would have been stronger if they just committed to the former more.

It's kind of silly how much bigger a deal the Puppet Master is in the movie vs how nothingburger it is in the manga. Is it true Shirow just didn't want to go in a serious route for the manga, and wanted to have his happy goofy fun portions? Or if he had done it over would he have made a serious work?
>>290465484I prefer the episodic format.Ghost in the Shell should have a newspaper funnies section every sunday.
>>290465484Anon, Shirow made the manga. He made it more serious in 1.5, less serious in 1.0, a bit in between in 2.0, what made you think he would have wanted it to be any different?>It's kind of silly how much bigger a deal the Puppet Master is in the movie vs how nothingburger it is in the manga. She definitely isn't a nothingburger in the manga, but she's a component of something bigger like every other character. In the movie the puppetmaster is a huge deal because Oshii likes to re-tell variations on the same story, it's like a fairytale with 3 or 4 stock characters who come back in each film he makes. So obviously everything centers around them.

>>290458954Honestly, it's amazing how much SAC diverged from the OG plot at times, or outright rearranged some things.Hard to believe that Mr. Wife Guy Togusa got divorced by SAC_2045 because his wife didn't want him working such a dangerous job and took the kids with her. Which isn't surprising, since their daughter was kidnapped during the events of Solid State Society and there was no way for him to hide the fact he worked as a field commander of Section 9 by then. I think another part of it was that she suspected Togusa had feelings for the Major that he was too professional to act upon.Frankly speaking, if my husband's boss looked like the SAC Major, I'd feel inadequate as hell, too.

Japan is still a democracy in this too so the political opposition will gladly use this. The Major wasn't even supposed to shoot him, her own organization is wondering why she did that.
There's been some speculation about the Puppetmaster's involvement in Motoko's behaviorpersonally I think that EVEN IF she was channeling 2501, the worst effect it had was that it made her a bit distracted, and later on she might have given Motoko a couple of ideas that she spewed back out.But I don't think Shirow wants us to think Motoko is under control, he isn't the type to pull that kind of twist. When he shows characters being mind-controlled he's pretty explicit about it.

He receives an answer in the form of her active participation. >I'm willing to go from "rape" to "forced marriage" / "forced procreation"I agree that you've identified the correct metaphors, but I don't see why we should treat their merger as forced when she contacts him herself, is fully informed of his plan, and does nothing to reject or resist him. >If Motoko isn't aware of what it is, then that's another level of deception / violation, correct? She receives the same essential information about their merger she got in the manga, their conversation just doesn't have the explicit spiritual framing that prompted her to conform to the standards of marriage. Religious elements are kept ambiguous and in the background.>There's more marriage implications in the film than in the mangaThe manga is the only version where it is a directly addressed part of the plot, and there a few other references to in that section, with the PM becoming her "crown" as they merge, and reincarnating as a hermaphrodite (A union of man and woman). I still think marriage is a reasonable analogue, but it is secondary to reproduction in this version (e.g. Motoko reincarnates as a child).
>>290468622ARAMAKI tells Saito to trail a guy*and I'm talking about this page
>>290468650>>290402920>if the angel is indeed the sign of a spiritual experience, then what are we to make of the garbageman's daughter? I am arguing that Motoko's angel vision is a product of accessing an ambiguously supernatural "vast and infinite" network she cannot yet comprehend. The girl's smile might seem angelic because she is an image (the only unambiguous illusion seen by a puppet) generated out of data from the same incomprehensible network. Actually, unlike his brunette appearance in the manga, "angelic" could be used to describe the PM as well, and he is likewise a native of the "sea of information.">>290403005>I think it's a massively important difference (among others) that reframes the ending of the film in a negative light. I think part of your aversion to this version of the PM is because he is more fearsome and controlling than he is in the manga, a bit more like a classical deity (a view supported by the music). It is easier to imagine that this version might try to force a merge if Motoko attempted to resist him. However, if we view him as some sort of spirit or deity, the question of consensual pregnancy or marriage does lose importance. It really isn't reasonable for someone to seek out a god, have sex with him, and then say "actually I don't want to get pregnant." Motoko was committing to some sort of major change as soon as she chose to dive him. Her willingness to embrace such a force in order to escape the constraints of her current life is already an significant expression of agency, regardless of what could have happened after. Given that on top of this her gamble paid off, I don't see much room to view this as a bad ending.
>>290468295Very cute. Would be a shame if he got blown up by Not Israel.
The government gave Motoko a giant ass so they could go after the news for violating obscenity laws if they showed her on tv.

>>290466790He was reaching, duh
Look at him go!
>>290468650Okay let's do away with all the symbolic stuff for now, no matter how pervasive it is.We can both see quite clearly that it's a reproduction proposal. That's explicit.Don't you think that reproduction, even moreso than marriage or sex, requires explicit consent? Especially if it's presented as an oral question rather than as a statement?I mean there are many different ways the Puppetmaster could have phrased it. Instead it went for "I have something to ask of you" and went for verbal communication.>>290468676Do you mean that the garbageman describing his daughter as angelic is a pure coincidence, and not a result of the Puppetmaster's manipulation?Or do you mean that mere contact with the Puppetmaster automatically induces religious bliss that prompts people to perceive it as an angel?>However, if we view him as some sort of spirit or deity, the question of consensual pregnancy or marriage does lose importance. On the contrary, it being either a spiritual entity or a program can frame Motoko's vision as either an authentic access to the truth, or as a digital construction. If it's the latter, it has no inherent value and shouldn't be considered a valid reason for consent. Also being a god doesn't mean you have more rights than mortals, it just means you have more power.>It really isn't reasonable for someone to seek out a god, have sex with him, and then say "actually I don't want to get pregnant." Once again I'm not saying Motoko is being reasonable. Both sides can be in the wrong.>Given that on top of this her gamble paid offThat's very arguable as well. Let's suspend our judgement on that for the moment.I'll try to answer again tomorrow morning, if not, by friday

A Ghost in the Shell continuation?!Hoping for a Vol.2 anime.“To reach the ‘beyond’ Shirow Masamune drew (Vol.2),we first had to finish the original (Vol.1) — faithfully.”SARU’s screenwriter, Toh Enjoe, has been talking about that horizon in his interview. He argues the franchise leans too hard on Motoko as icon — and that the real charge sits in Book 2. So they wanted Book 1 done properly first. We sit with Vol.1 again, then wait for Vol.2 as the next apocalypse past our present tense. And then—He sayis in interview following;Theme: return to origin / return to the source text. Reality is catching up to Shirow; faithful adaptation has teeth now.Hard parts: keep the rush toward the Puppet Master; brain-dives/cyber-war often exceed what a script can carry — “art crew, do your best,” collaborative. First drafts were near-literal manga lifts; Enjoe as moderator. World-building is absurdly dense (e.g. Emergency Call-up Flat 17 is a labeled building in-panel).Why fidelity: you can’t move forward without resetting to origin. Franchise over-icons Motoko, so Shirow’s “beyond” (manga Vol.2) stays out of reach. Enjoe feels Vol.2 maps closer to today’s society — but Vol.1 must be drawn faithfully first as foundation. Connecting to the present requires that reset; with AI this deep, now is when to stage the Puppet Master. Why it doesn’t age: architecture, cars, robots — all Shirow-original, not period pastiche or borrowed memes; no 1989 politics/lit/film gags anchoring it to Showa smell. New staff still get as confused as his generation did.Cross with 2026: cyborgs/BMI enter on convenience; Enjoe personally hesitant on invasive mods; later generations won’t be. Users ignore where data lives — like cyberbrain civilians. Fuchikoma-line feels nearer than Puppet Master-first. Vol.2 AI ≈ today’s agents; conspiracy spam risk; human bandwidth is the bottleneck. Nothing has replaced GITS as the work that hacks the next generation yet.https://dime.jp/genre/2137854/

>>290469739I'd personally prefer a 1.5 adaptation first, but IF they did a MMI anime, they'd make it a little more digestible and understandable to the layman, right?
>>290470968Presumably they'll just give Israel as pseudonym like they gave Russia or America.
>>290471043I think 1.5 and MMI were meant to be running concurrently or something--maybe a Man-Machine Interface adaptation could work if they interspersed some bits of Human Error Processor here and there to help fill out the runtime or something as an ongoing B-plot of some kind, since Human Error Processor was meant to be included as a part of Man-Machine Interface to begin with before Shirow changed his mind.

That act of faith is a slippery slope that can lead you down to full-blown animism, just like doubting animism is a slippery slope that can lead you down to full-blown solipsism. People can easily manipulate you to go down one path or the other, because your perceptions are inherently unreliable and communication technologies make them even easier to manipulate. "Communication technologies" includes such basic things as language. So the more you try to understand people, the more you run the risk of misunderstanding them. Some people think they want friends, but what they really want is a mirror.

The rest were linked directly to the PM>PM was created as an artificial intelligence with the purpose of high level espionage and le hacking>she le achieved consiousness>when the people creating her tried to format her to prevent her from gaining more sentience, she escaped. They did not realize that she was basically observing them the entire time and immediately learned to hack people's souls basically>so she jumped and got away, then started doing a bunch of bullshit but idrk why at this point. Some of it might've been operations started when she was still captive, but some of them were definitely her fucking with people for lolz apparently>section 9 grabs her after a car accident > most intelligent cybernetic being, who claims it's alive, doesn't look both ways when crossing the street>section six or whatever comes in to reclaim her>they make it look like some 3rd party did it or she herself maybe, but really it was them kidnapping her. Motoko and aramaki clocked it immediately.>after the chase scene, they try to blow her up. PM is dying>motoko dives into her brain to try and salvage her, instead realizes that she's just made contact with a first of its kind actually living GHOST that spontaneously arose from a primordial soup of information.>project 2501 as a consiousness starts to die, motoko starts to die, too, alongside her because they are sharing the same brainspace at that moment>when motoko is rescued by batou, it turns out that somehow the PM consiousness survived inside Motoko, so basically she's gotten free schizophrenia from the dive

>>290479643Frankly, we need to go further
You have about 7 episodes of unfunny, uninteresting, episodic shit with no real overarching purpose before it delves into a REAL plotline that does little more than come out of left-field with meandering "OMG, I'm 14 and this is deep!" dialogue and the animators jerking themselves off over how many colors they can vomit on the screen before they give you a seizure. Why should I give a fuck about these surface-level philosophical questions when the series itself doesn't give me a reason to care? I don't like the characters, and the world isn't interesting, so why does it matter? The proposed introspection is incumbent on the fact that you AREN'T drawing these reflections from what you've seen in the series itself but from elsewhere. Motoko doesn't think, Batou doesn't think, and Togusa doesn't think; they act. If that's the case, then what was the point of bringing it up? Any quandaries to the meaning of life or any other existentialist question always devolve into some uninteresting resolution of "it doesn't matter; do your job." Definitely a quintessential Japanese work.No ideas presented in the story have any weight because the story itself doesn't have weight. It's a glorified OVA with a runtime that's too long for how elementary its themes are. This adaptation is the equivalent of Resident Evil 1.5: I'll concede that the prototype existing is pretty neat, but the game is NOT better than 2. Elza is NOT better than Claire, and this gremlin slag quirk chungus Major (OMG (S)HE IS LITERALLY ME!!!) is NOT better than her granny counterpart(s).

>>290486178Well, you can believe what you want just as I can. At the end of the day, we don't know what the soul is, if it exists, if there is something after death. Science doesn't have the means to measure it and thus prove it's existence, but it also cannot prove that it doesn't exist, just that the brain is inextricably linked to our consciossness, without knowing why or how exactly though. Similar to how we can interpret the laws of physics without knowing why they are the way they are, we just know that they are. I choose to believe the soul exists, that's all.
>>290485484Would be a good analogy but if the soul is the internet and the brain a router then any router would work the same, meaning I could give you a brain transplant and you would have the same personality >>290485855No, its no meme, your personality, memories and everything you call a "soul" can radically change with trauma, surgery, drugs or even just something pushing into an area of your brain like a tumor Which is irrefutable evidence that souls dont exist but Philosophy majors are intellectually dishonest so the debate continues on
>>290445699Gooning to both Mokoto's fat massive asses.
>>290486394Obviosly that analogy is within the limits of what we have at our disposal which is not enough to even begin to understand the soul. Talking about brain transplants is useless has it has never done before so we don't know what would actually happen.>No, its no meme, your personality, memories and everything you call a "soul" can radically change with trauma, surgery, drugs or even just something pushing into an area of your brain like a tumorWhich is irrefutable evidence that souls dont exist but Philosophy majors are intellectually dishonest so the debate continues onIt doesn't, it just proves that damage to the brain alters your personality, not that the soul itself doesn't exist, just that it manifests differently, again similarly to a faulty router.
>>290486394cognitive philosophy has moved waaaay past the question of souls a while ago bruh
>>290486524Peak.
>>290486553It makes sense, they cannot explain the soul so they focus on what they can measure. That doesn't mean it cannot exist, just that we don't have the tools to measure it
>>290486524What is the use case for a fat cyborg ass?
>>290486530This is a ton of mental gymnastics to justify your cultural preconceptions and biases tied to religion (whatever you're religious or not) and a magical view of reality
>>290486627For strong force, she falls she'll be protected in the back, same reason large breasts would protect her chest plate.
>>290486650Yes, I do believe that we are more than what we can measure. And until proven otherwise, I will keep believing that. Remember, though, that science is fundamentally human and thus fallacious, we will never know all the answers because we are an inside viewer of our own existence, like a rat in a cage.
>>290486627interrogative buttjobs/hotdogging
>>290486627Balance, lifting power and sprinting/jumping strength All very relevant things for a combat body Have you ever seen a special forces or firefighter with a flat ass?
>>290486699some /a/non drew this
>>290486784This shit can bounce off bullets.
>>290486753The burden of proof is on you and your belief can be easily traceable to ancient superstition surviving through tradition so it matters nothing to me
>>290486795Based anon.
>>290486831How can i prove something that not even science can measure? Have you read my post? We will never know the answer, it simply a matter of faith. You know, the thing that makes us human?
>>290486865How can you prove that I'm not empathically fucking your mom right now?
>>290486883Kek what does that even mean? Did you mean telepathically?
>>290486852Artist did a good job on her fucked up doll/bug eyes.
>>290486909No, like we are connected emotionally and give each other orgasms over vast distances
>>290487038That would be nice, if we could transcend our boundaries, wouldn't it? Alas, as long as we live, we are imprisoned in our bodies
>>290479070>most intelligent cybernetic being, who claims it's alive, doesn't look both ways when crossing the streetPlease be patient with her, she was literally raised in a lab playing board games. She's just a sheltered gamer girl who wants to be pretty like Motoko. Also she's only 5 years old.
I decided to go ahead and check the rest of Shirow's stuff out since I only ever watched the movies and SAC. Gotta say, Dominion: Conflict was amazingThe prequel OVA - structured like a children's show but with adult jokes, overall fineThe original manga - extremely hectic, I also feel that in this anime adaptationThe New Dominion - a generic cop show, kinda boringConflict - actually mindblowing, a dozen of little plots all wrapped up in a single in-universe day
>>290488178I know, it illustrates the theme of connexions even better than GitS
>>290486181the autistic world building in Confilct One was very nice, but the general mood was comfier in the OG, and removing Leona's copilot was harsh. it's a shame we can't have a fusion of both versions.
>>290465484Stick around. The Puppet Master isn't over.
>>290469739I would cum actual buckets if they did a Man Machine Interface anime.
>>290470560A man and a doll aren't that different in the end.
>>290486394>your personality, memories and everything you call a "soul" can radically change with trauma, surgery, drugsso according to your logic even a life experience can change your 'soul'. The problem with your dumbass argument is that you don't actually define what a personality or soul is, so you can change the definition depending on what you want to prove, and since there is no universal definition your gonna keep making retarded argument to try to prove your point, so no more (you)s for you
>>290469739holy shit!
>>290489390simplistichow about this then>>290475292
>>290489408Define soul then Why should the burden of explaining the exact definition of your retarded metaphysical concept fall on me? I'm just using common traits that third worlders like muslims, latinx and americans use when describing this supposed entity
>>290489358then buy blurays of this show
>>290489494Some people want a mirror, some people want a doll to play with. Other humans aren't thinking beings, but objects for one's self-satisfaction. This is inescapable. Beyond saintly altruists other humans exist in your life so you can pantomime the experiences you want with them. Thats why Batou wanted Motoko - to go back to the old days. And why he couldn't have her as he wanted.
>>290489592there we go that's more like it
>>290489186Conflict One is probably the best Shirow manga, imo.
>>290489554NTA, The soul is that which experiences itself through the body and the mind, it is not the person, it precedes it and follows it
