It has a genuinely interesting premise where society has failed to answer the problem of what to do about quirks and had instead settled on a system that is far too stringent and instead creates the sort of supervillian threats that it most fears by giving people no way out once they fall through the cracks. This allowed a number of the villains to be sympathetic, because while they made bad choices the system also failed them along the way. Toga needed an outlet for her quirk, and Twice needed a fucking therapist not a jail cell. The myriad flaws in their society are never thought about, with the sole exception of the heteromorphs which were introduced as a social pressure WAY too late in the story to matter and only a heteromorph hero gives a shit about them being treated unfairly, nobody else. A lot could have been done with this setup, but because the story only REALLY cares about OFA vs AFO none of that gets any development.

Bam! Now you'd joined together the social themes and the AFO vs OFA plot in a way that means that while AFO is the big bad that needs to be beaten, but the government has failed the people and needs reform as well in the aftermath when the news gets out. It would be a tidy way to work it all together.

Like, it seems that society genuinely just never gave a shot about Deku after that despite by all rational logic he would have been a massive celebrity even without a quirk. If anything, that would just make him MORE famous: the hero who gave up his quirk to save the rest of the world!The ending of MHA is just... sad. The timeskip was too long, and Deku was too unsuccessful. It genuinely makes it seem like he saved the world and then just fucking floundered for the better part of a decade with no accomplishments or progress on any front, just wasting away without even any close friends anymore until the ending tries to be this unearned triumphant thing way too late to feel natural. Allmight survives the fight but Deku is the holder of OFA now... despite the fact that he didn't really EARN it. He was just in the right place at the right time.Now Deku has the power of OFA on top of his previously established team leader skills, so he's set to be a hero. But the other candidates that were in the running/the people who backed them are pissed because Deku is an imposter in their eyes and they want him to pass OFA on to someone better. Deku needs to prove himself worthy of the power that he now has, both to the other candidates and to himself.
