Watched the first batch of episodes of One Room TA that was released a couple of days ago. If anyone else is reading Eoshinki you probably got a laugh out of my post last week. The very next chapter slapped me in the face with self reflection that revealed how the MC wasn't thinking straight since the start. I was too influenced by simple sounding MTL and how incredibly bland-generic that opening arc read, I didn't have faith that there would actually be a plot reason for it as characterisation. I liked a ton of art and speculation about Goyo's unstable moments but they seemed brief enough I didn't entertain the thought he's meant to be consistently warped and inhuman, something the rest of the cast has been disturbed by this whole time. I just took him to be the usual anxious-on-the-inside protag going through horrors with prior knowledge, albeit one who comes across as young and helpless while everyone else dotes on him warily. It's rewarding after those humdrum action chapters to see other sides to their personalities that explain their reactions in previous arcs and show they have low energy modes when they're not trying to be social with the man exploding freak. Never forget Goyo exploded a man and enjoyed it. The prose is still not as dense and evocative as something like Our Hotel, and the game theming takes the edge off the cosmic horror for long stretches, but like you say, it's fun slowly piecing together a mystery and looking back at the clues. Also in its favour we get so used to the "play" that one arc can deceive the reader for a ch, and when significant anomalies occur they feel appropriately discordant. Despite doing two bloody horror game arcs it hasn't relied on gore to make scenes feel uncanny, it's utilised liminal spaces and unpredictable behaviour/communication. In Slay2Plate the eeriest part was just recontextualised RPG boss fight mechanics and a nice dream.I'm getting strung along by the promise that something ain't right and now I think about it there's plenty if you're willing to imagine it. I just worry that people will read it like straight fantasy and go "what's scary about an animal headed monster? just fight it lol". We got Je Hyuno, Mr Crow McEdgelord with knives for fingers, who can cut a building in two with a swipe, and no matter how moe he acts he's not a cosy instant win. The author finds ways to prevent totally stomping everything (but I do feel Goyo has done nothing but make progress in the ch I've read, I'm waiting for a real failure. The universe has been forgiving even when everything goes tits up, and he should find a limit to bending rules. Give us a kindergarden hangman kinda arc for the flavour, make Dominic misbehave).
