When he saved the day in the guild raid he did it just by stalling for time and he needed the leader to do damage.It doesn't get good until he gets the skill book. That fixes his two main problems: low damage output and slow speed.

The CC effects are super specific, the debuffs are single target melee, and the class has no taunt of similar effect to pull monsters off of allies, and the only area of effect ability requires completely nullifying an incoming attack and scales poorly. Every other brawler class is better in every way until you get the right skillbook to break the scaling and skillbooks are rare enough in this universe that people aren't experimenting.

In the story we are told the heavy knight class is not good without a skill book. We are also shown it is not very good without a skill book, despite the MC having knowledge from the real world. Once he gets the skill book his play style changes and he becomes very good.It's silly to argue about it. Even if they did a poor job of showing why it's bad (they actually did it pretty well) it's a fictional story and you can just suspend disbelief.
