Nowadays, it seems most people can't discuss it without mentioning the dogshit sequels Zeta, ZZ, and CCA which were made by completely different people and should be considered non-canon. It really devalues the original masterpiece.
Americans in particular are bizarrely obsessed with Zeta, which was quite disliked when it aired and was much less popular and successful than the original.

Bad writing

It's overrated but I don't think enough anime fans especially new anime fans have actually watched Gundam largely because there's so much content to wade through.

0079:
>As the show was rebroadcast multiple times, the average viewership exceeded 10%, reaching 17.9% in the Kanto region in 1981 and 25.7% in the Nagoya region in 1982 (highest viewership of 29.1%)

Zeta:
>In the Kanto region, the average viewership rating was 6.4%, with a peak rating of 11.7%. In the Chubu region, Nagoya TV, the key station, recorded an even higher average viewership rating of 12.3%, with a peak rating of 17.7%.

Zeta's gunpla sales were even less than half of 0079 at its peak and Katsumi Kawaguchi stated that it "failed to meet Bandai's sales expectations."
Zeta was only voted second place in the Animage Grand Prix, losing to Dirty Pair of all things while 0079 won two times in a row in a landslide.
The mixed reception from old fans is noted pretty much everywhere in Japanese sources. It's like American Zetafags are living in an alternate reality.

I really can't think of a gundam series where the toy advertisement part actually held it back. At their absolute worst you might get a little monster of the week filler, but half of that is butt ugly MAs that clearly aren't a merchandising focus. That's more just regular old filler.
>>
>>290496455
Zeta's pacing is atrocious. It does the same thing over and over for 1/3 of its run, with uninteresting villains and lots of fights that feel meaningless. The show only takes off when Haman shows up. Those last ~10 episodes are really good.
Also the whole thing is *really* Tomino, for good and for ill. If you dislike any part of his directing, you will strongly dislike that part of Zeta.

Yes, at least by westerners. I've considered 0079 to be a masterpiece since I first saw it in the 00s. Later on I watched the rest of the Gundam franchise, barring some entries, and I have to say that none of them are on the level of the original. Some series may do some individual things better but none of them reach that ultimate form that 0079 did.

I think in general you divide subsequent Gundam series into two camps: those that meander like Zeta and others that have momentum but are shallow.
When I say Zeta is meandering I mean it has a particular style Tomino likes where the series is mostly about political factions having mandatory skirmishes while characters wax poetic. The overarching plots doesn't really tend to pick up until the home stretch. You can see this in works like Turn A.
The other type, the momentum series, are works like 0083. They tend to focus on the military aspects more and the plotline is more central and conventional in its pacing. However that also goes for the characters.

0079 is a series that perfectly fused the meandering and momentum styles seen in later Gundam series. 0079 has a plot and sticks to it, while also doing lots of sci-fi/military world building, but also manages to seamlessly integrate Tomino's character drama style and the eventual big finale without ever really falling into the meandering narrative trap. It's this integration of elements which ultimately elevates 0079 above the rest despite its rough production style.

>How can anyone dislike Zeta? Any fault in Zeta is also present in 0079 but Zeta expands on all the original's concepts while also being much higher production and having cooler mobile suits.
For all its pretensions of being a much more mature series, Zeta’s conflict is actually much less nuanced and morally gray than the original’s. The Zeon were often good people with a valid point who had their movement taken over by corrupt leaders who distorted and twisted its goals. It felt like a tragedy to see people like Ramba Ral or Lalah get killed. And even then, Garma, Dozle, Kycilia and Degwin showed that even the Zabis could have noble aspects.
Meanwhile, every single Titan is either a piece of shit or a brainwashed soldier. They hold discriminatory viewpoints and are basically all just in it for themselves. There is no nuance or tragedy to fighting them, save for Four or Rosamia. They all suck.
Zeta’s mobile suits are also pretty inferior to the originals. The Zaku to Gelgoog pipeline is filled with memorable suits, all with their own abilities to make them standout. Zeta, meanwhile, is just a parade of suits that fly around, shoot beams and, later, transform. Of sure, we’re told they’re more powerful. But what really is the on-screen difference between the Ashimarr and the Baun-Doc in terms of how it fights? The only one that really sticks out is the Psycho-Gundam, and that’s just a fusion of the Big Zam and Zeong.
>>
>>290499989
At least Zeta got to finish its run tho, no 43 episode bullshit

I´d say that the plot/characters endured the test of time but the art, pacing and animation did not. Too many filler battles leading to absolutely nothing and only made to show mech designs. That automatically prevents it from being a masterpiece too, if the audience has to endure mediocrity for the sake of the good stuff then, even if the good stuff is good, the test of true mastery is failed.

Zeta has better production values that still hold so it´s probably more accessible to revisionist audiences but the actual content is pretty unremarkable and Camille is a little bitch. One could tolerate Amuro for the sake of Char but no amount of Char is worth tolerating that little shit. And you know the UC only gets worse as time goes by. I´d say the best Gundam shows are not even part of the UC at all but rather self contained shows that take the best ideas from the UC and are just better at executing them.

>>290509414

Zeta is "potential anime", as the kids would say
It has a strong concept, an entertaining main character, the main antagonist of its predecessor in a supporting role, and much larger part of the setting to tackle. But it just... fucking drags. It wastes so much good setup.
0079 had something happening all the time, white base either had its own problems to deal with or orders from the feddies that kept it moving. The progression of zeon mobile suits was really felt; the dom, gouf and z'gok all presented very real threats and Amuro got his ass beat a little. Yeah sometimes it felt like "filler", but at least shit was happening.
Zeta spends so much fucking time setting up large arcs that just aren't interesting at all (even if the payoff is usually good) with retarded characters that repeat themselves over and over and seldom explores spacenoid politics beyond the Axis when that should really be a bigger part of it.
I also hated how it did that "side-switching morally confused character" bullshit when the Titans are just objectively evil in every way, and far less interesting than Zeon.

I love Kamiyu and the mobile suit designs and Z Toki wo Koete but I really wish the anime actually paid off what it set up
>>
Tomino forever MOGGED by his eternal rival Miyazaki because Miya’s films are internationally famous and critically acclaimed whereas Gundam is only well-known in Japan even despite his DEIfication of it.

And to think Miyazaki didn’t have to get to where he currently is by adding tons of non-Asian POC or racemixing either, just making normal anime with good stories, good characters and good animation instead of pandering to the Hollywood/Disney crowd goes a long way.

Newtypes were cool in the original for one single episode (41) and all the rest of the time, before and after, they suck actually. Yes, including in the last episode.

It's not the concept of psychic powers/empathic connections I'm objecting to (the obvious ubermensch angle the fans pretend doesn't exist despite it being inseparable from the concept of Newtypes in general is shitty though) but just the way it's implemented in the story.

I'm rewatching the 0079 episodes from the point the Newtype bullshit is introduced on to see if my opinion has changed now that I've seen the entire series. (in dub form this time instead of Japanese for variety, which has no bearing on my takes since the stuff I'm complaining about here exists no matter which language you watch it in) I just watched episode 32 for reference, so a little before Lalah's introduction + Amuro's heavy usage of Newtype powers in the final stretch of the series.

Newtype stuff actually disappears entirely from the show after its introduction in 24 all the way to episode 31 (for Sayla) or 32 (for Amuro). The lack of Newtype bullshit for this stretch of episodes actually pisses me off in retrospect. This is because despite me disliking its implementation in most episodes, it feels like there should have been more of it considering how loaded the final episodes are with it, both visually in the context of the fights and on an explicit text level since eventually every other line out of characters' mouths becomes about Newtype bullshit.
>>
>>290512699
Amuro very quickly becomes Newtype god and it actually feels insulting next to a character like Lalah (an actually interesting use of the Newtype). At most Amuro has only used Newtype abilities, like, ~10 times give or take before Lalah's death, possibly even a little less if any of the later episodes don't have it, though I suspect they all do after a point. Lalah has been training at an institute specifically for Newtype bullshit for months, and before that already had powers notable enough for them to be noticed even by Char who is canonically meant to be a shitty Newtype, so shitty that narratively you might as well not make him one at all and you'd get essentially the same effect in all of his interactions with Amuro.

Amuro is able to match if not beat Lalah when using Newtype shit, I'm not up enough on the minutiae of this aspect of Gundam lore to know exactly which of them is supposed to be better but just from 0079's writing patterns I'd expect it to be wunderkind Amuro, who's always written as the best at everything except I guess treating Fraw Bow like an actual human being by the end of the series this is like the only interesting thing about Amuro left, his one flaw He just speedruns being a Newtype and it's not that interesting.

It's not interesting because in the episodes without the Newtype bullshit in between his lame awakening and then his lamer Newtype hax marathon, he actually is shown winning challenging fights in interesting ways and making clever deductions about situations on his own entirely without space magic, then after a point that disappears entirely. Like to the point I wonder why he even needed the space magic at all. All it does is make Amuro look dumber and less competent if "really" the space magic is carrying him.

I'll never really get why fans find it more interesting to see him win fights with the stupid flash effect instead of without it when you know he actually used his brain.

I have some more Newtype shit I want to bitch about but it's just going to be disjointed from here, because I'm looking over my notes from the episodes I watched recently in order. But maybe there's some interesting points in there anyway, and if not then fuck it, more than anything I'm writing this for me.

>Amuro's awakening is lame
Feels like a missed opportunity kinda that the episode where Amuro obviously awakes to his Newtype powers, ep 24 AKA Matilda Fucking Dies, doesn't actually connect this awakening to Matilda at all despite these powers supposedly being based on like human emotions/connections/empathy/whatever, it's basically whatever to make whatever plot device work anyway. Like the episode spends a significant chunk before the fight scene showing Amuro's feelings for Matilda and putting up death flags for her, and it kind of feels like an obvious opportunity to connect the awakening of Amuro's powers to his feelings for her and desire to protect her, yet this doesn't really happen at all. The episode hypes up Amuro's feelings for Matilda in the first half, and then he happens to use Newtype stuff in a fight in the second half, but there's no indication these things were connected. Like it's not like the powers arise based on concern for Matilda or rage about her death or whatever; I think they first show up before he even realizes she's in danger. Like it was just coincidental.

I don't like the space magic giving Amuro easy wins but I feel like it'd at least relate better to the themes/ultimate conclusion of the series if you can first see his Newtype powers arising based clearly out of his concern for another. Maybe you could say that subconsciously that's what's happening, but it really feels like a stretch. Mostly since, and I'll talk about this more later, the Newtype bullshit is pulled off so casually in this one and doesn't seem to be arising from a place of emotion beyond the fight itself.

I notice that Gundam fans/maybe Tomino fans specifically get really defensive if anyone says maybe something could've been implemented slightly differently, usually something along the lines of
>WELL ACKSHULLY that's the more standard cliche storytelling beat and so it's actually genius that Gundam didn't do it, sasuga Tomino-sama
and so I guess someone could say this here, but it feels like there was an obvious opportunity to sort of give his Newtype awakening more dramatic/emotional weight that I feel like they didn't take despite all the pieces for doing so being in the episode already.

At least I can say I maybe would've actually liked it if it'd happened that way instead of it just doing nothing for me.

>Newtype stuff used too casually, to the point where it's not even clear why it was needed at all

Amuro's first two usages of Newtype shit are implemented really oddly, I don't know if it's an animation direction issue or a writing one but it's not even clear to me that these situations required Newtype bullshit at all.

The first time is with the Black Tri-Stars and I think his powers let him know that there's another guy behind him maybe? It wasn't that clear to me even on rewatch and I don't remember it too well, but it felt like that moment needed to be given more weight. Like it wasn't even clear to me that he would've instantly died to the guy or something if not for the Newtype flash warning him; like isn't the Gundam designed to withstand that type of bullshit anyway? It doesn't feel particularly notable or interesting and seems like something he would've been able to notice on his own in a typical fight anyway (also Gundam has monitors doesn't it, I swear like 2 episodes after this he realizes a different guy is behind him because of those)

>>
>>290513899
The second time is in ep 32 against a random Rick Dom; the guy moves his gun or whatever and Amuro gets a Newtype Flash to tell if he's going to move it up or down. This felt particularly lame because it feels like a soldier with experience/good reflexes could've done this on his own anyway (and Amuro's definitely meant to have experience at this point, over 100 enemy units taken out at this point and not even counting the use of Newtype abilities), and this wasn't even a dire situation for Amuro. Or if it was meant to be one, the direction didn't indicate it. Also there was even less emotion from Amuro involved than the Matilda death episode, unless you want to say it's based on him protecting White Base maybe.

Sayla's Newtype awakening in ep 31 is the one time in these episodes that the Newtype stuff used in battle feels like it makes sense actually; she's in a bad situation, like possible imminent death and wondering how she'll get out of it, and gets a Newtype flash to help her shoot the enemy or whatever. This was fine actually compared to the Amuro stuff and closer to how it feels like it should be used to show it's something exceptional and not just being a good pilot (saving a character from otherwise certain death or helping them achieve something otherwise impossible). It also helps that Sayla's canonically meant to be not a great pilot, like yeah she's better than a random Zeon grunt but she's clearly often struggling and uncomfortable with it. It makes more sense that she'd have to rely on Newtype abilities than someone like Amuro, who doesn't even seem to need it in the first place (except when fighting someone with the same abilities like Lalah, which was good)
>>
>>290514164
Although this Sayla scene is still actually a lot less interesting than the feats without Newtype stuff involved. There's a scene in the immediate next ep where Sayla like shoots both legs (?) off a Rick Dom before going for the kill shot, entirely on her own, with no Newtype stuff involved that I remember, and it's kind of crazy that people prefer an instant win with an overused flash animation/sound effect to something that actually shows her skills developing in a novel way.

>weird lack of curiosity/introspection from (almost) everyone about Newtype shit

It's also pretty weird to me that characters never seem to notice/reflect on Newtype ability usage from themselves or others until it abruptly becomes like the defining feature of the plot in the last handful of episodes. Like no "in this battle I got this feeling that saved me, but I don't know where it came from" or characters asking how Amuro pulled something off or whatever. I feel like just a little of this could've gone a long way in just making the characters seem a little more self-aware and the Newtype stuff's rise in plot importance not feeling so sudden. People might argue that Matilda saying Amuro might be psychic counts as this, and yeah I agree it was intended as foreshadowing, but this was actually long before his abilities awakened so wasn't accurate at the time. I mean I'd like to see more discussion of it after the abilities are actually used.

Again, people could say this is too cliche, and I'm not saying to explicitly spell out everything about it so as to ruin the intrigue, but just characters even subtly acknowledging that something weird just happened in that last fight might have been nice.

The only exceptions are Char and Lalah, which makes this weirder. Lalah is the only character in 0079 whose Newtype abilities are utilized in a way I actually enjoy all the time, at least up until the last episode anyway (living as Amuro's tulpa girlfriend forever feels pretty offputting)

>Why do people like old shows?
Usually a healthy relationship with their old folks.
>>
>>290514677
It's made clear in the Texas episodes that Lalah is aware of how different she is from others and is interested as soon as she realizes there's someone close by whose soul vibrates to the same frequency or whatever (this is one of the aspects of Newtype stuff that's actually interesting to me). Amuro realizes the same thing about Lalah's presence. But while Lalah is aware of her own abilities, Amuro just doesn't seem to show any introspection or anything about them at all. You could say that the difference is that Lalah spent a while at a place focused entirely on the development of Newtype shit, but the weird part is that Char is the one who noticed her abilities and brought her there.

As said, Char is meant to be a shitty Newtype. People can and do connect this to like a lack of empathy on his part or at least unwillingness to make a true connection with others, or something, which yeah does relate to the show's intended themes. But all this makes it weird that Char of all characters is the one who identifies that Lalah is different at all.

>there could have been more Newtype shit, actually

I actually found it really weird on rewatch how the Newtype bullshit vanishes for like 6 straight episodes after its introduction. I'm obviously not a fan of how eventually Amuro is using it constantly for example, but since it's clearly meant to be a major part of the plot, maybe they could've worked it in a bit more at appropriate moments. I actually believed on my first watch that it must have been in the show constantly after its introduction and maybe I just missed some of the flashes, because it is constantly in the show in the last few episodes, but it disappears for a long for a while actually and that's weird too.

That interview where Tomino copes saying he wanted young blood working on Zeta really exposes him as an idiot. He let a bunch of proven, experienced and decently talented people go and replaced them with randoms that even with the benefit of time either never amounted to anything or failed to surpass the old staff. I've even read interviews of Zeta staff saying they see it as their training work.
>>
Gundam is more interesting without newtype crap. Gundam is most interesting when it's about the OYW and leans on its military elements.
>>
>>290515211
The compilation movies do add moments with some Federation officers and Bright talking about Newtypes and Amuro likely being one, leading to the prominence later, but the actual awakening of the characters is still treated in a subdued way.
>>
>>290515211
Amuro does some crazy shit in some of these non-Newtype episodes, like cutting a thermonuclear bomb in midair along a dotted line seconds before its intended explosion, diving out of a car just before it plunges over a random cliff, and immediately waking up to kill an enemy after being literally passed out and drooling due to the gravitational forces. Again I question why he even needs Newtype abilities at all if this is the kind of shit he can just do normally without them, but some of these moments could've had the Newtype flash instead of or in addition to the other stuff. I think Newtype abilities being used would've felt more appropriate for some of this shit instead of whatever was going on with the Tri-Stars for example.

>once Newtype stuff is on the table, you can't take it off

I spent most of the fight scenes of episode 25-30 just waiting for Amuro to use more Newtype bullshit in the fight scenes. Partially because I wanted to make note of it so I'd have actual hard numbers for how much it's used, but also just because it's often lame and I was expecting to be disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised when he didn't and several of these episodes felt stronger on a rewatch, but I think it's kind of notable that just the anticipation of Newtype bullshit kind of took away from getting truly invested in the fights. Like the entire time you're expecting it to be used, and even if it's not, you know it can be used and so now fights feel a little less life-or-death when you know Amuro now has another secret weapon in addition to the Gundam.
>>
>>290515598
This feeling lasts for a long while in the latter episodes of the show because Amuro's fighting literally no one else on his level for a long-ass time until Lalah enters the battlefield. I guess there was Challia Bull, but I legit don't even remember what happened in his episode because he died after what felt like a minute anyway. One reason episode 41 and its Newtype stuff feels so interesting, for once, is that literally everyone involved has and is using Newtype abilities. Obviously the focus of the battle is Amuro and Lalah, but Char and Sayla do some Newtype shit too, and this is all fine. It's totally different when it's multiple Newtype characters engaging on the same level (kinda) instead of just one dominating ordinary humans, but it's frustrating that it took so long to even get to this point.

People seem to shit on the original 52-episode script outline thing, but I think there were some decent ideas in there. Amuro fighting more Newtype enemies besides Lalah (I'm not even counting Char as an equivalent Newtype or enemy) is one of them.

There's also an argument to be made that at the time of initial airing people wouldn't immediately realize what was happening with the Newtype abilities and so wouldn't be expecting them in every fight, and yeah this is true, but I think by episode 32 it's unmistakable. The flash clearly returns again after also being featured in the episode before, and yet another instance of the flash is shown in the preview of the next episode too. At that point I think you'd have to realize something's going on because it's such an atypical effect for this show.

That said I get it might've been hard to implement the Newtype bullshit in the larger plot, like if it's too present then episode 41 feels less surprising and unique, and if it's less present then episode 41 would just feel completely jarring. But I also don't think the show as it is hit a balance of it that worked for me in this area even though ep 41 was good.

Overall despite shitting on the usage of Newtypes within 0079, there are actually multiple things I like or at least think are interesting about it, and are why I don't hate the concept in itself, just aspects of how it was implemented. Lalah is a great character and her abilities were always used in an interesting way outside of the weird wish-fulfillmenty Amuro stuff in the last episode. The Newtype fight/connection scene in episode 41 is maybe the high point of the show in terms of its visual imagery, and I think is much better than anything in the following 2 episodes. I think the idea of certain people instantly connecting is at least interesting even though I can also see how that can be used for lazy writing to force a supposedly deep connection, since I know this gets complained about in later Gundam stuff. I also think Newtypes being used for warfare is interesting and in a way feels like something I can see happening IRL-- not the Newtype part, but just weapons that rely on human thought/brainwaves since I think there are already some machines getting more accurate at reading human thought etc.? (I could be an idiot and/or wrong) I think I've run the stuff I dislike about Newtypes into the ground already here so I'll leave it at that

Mostly I'm just not a fan of its execution specifically and I think it was a big part of me overall losing interest hard in the latter half of 0079. I think somewhere around 34-37 is when I completely checked out even though 41 was good enough to briefly bring me back. I still am interested discussing the show as a whole obviously, but I think the rise of Newtypes is when I stopped actually liking it consistently.

Mostly I just wrote this essay here because western Gundam fandom tends to strawman anyone who has any problem with Newtypes, and I see more posts creating and shitting on these strawmen than I do actual examples of people complaining about them. So I just wanted to do so in extensive detail here
>>
>>290516507
>the premise of giant humanoid robots is pure fantasy
Anon, the premise is what you have to accept.
Gundam has certain premises, like no BVR firing solutions and big robots. Once you extrapolate from there, many of the idiosyncracies become "realistic" within the premises given. Are you autistic or retarded to not understand this?

>Artillery doesn't aim at targets, it bombards areas
It's not 1914 anymore.
Artillery exists to destroy targets at long range for relatively cheap using indirect fire. Why shoot a hundred shells when you can achieve the same in 5?

>Being h-hayai isn't going to save anyone
Just don't be there? Again, there is no real way to aim at things outside of your visual range.
Also, artillery can't shoot down attack aircraft, which is what mobile suits are.
>>
>>290515366
Yeah this does sound like it might be a little better. I think also the movies necessarily removing some fights could make Amuro's Newtype stuff more tolerable too, since that would make it seem like these abilities developed much quicker.

I haven't watched the movies in full yet and don't expect my opinion on the movies will be dramatically different from the show honestly, since the stories of both are essentially the same and I do have issues with the story (I'd also even say the visuals during the Lalah connection/death scene look worse to me in the movie in terms of stuff like color choices since I have looked them up, even if they're technically better animated) but this does sound like an improvement.
