Been reading the DxD light novels to see what the fuss was all about. It's actually not that bad. The world-building is super extensive to the point where its kind of overwhelming. The battle autism is pretty fun, it does have its moments. Besides the MC dragging it down, I mean, why on Earth would the author make a perverted MC only to make him restrain himself while girls are literally throwing themselves at him? It's not just bad writing, the author might as well made the MC have split personalities. The times where he wasn't oblivious and a spineless wimp, he's actually a good MC if he didn't have those terrible qualities. The hentai tropes does drag it down as well, but then again, this is one of the most famous trope-y anime of all time, so I'll give that a pass.Other than that, I'd say the world-building is probably the best thing about DxD so far. The battles are okay, but not that amazing. Besides that, the girls from this series are definitely top tier. I'm not surprised that this is one of the most famous, if not most famous harem anime of all time. In both the west AND the east.tl;dr The world-building and the girls are really the only redeeming qualities of this series.
