how watchable is the patlabor series
don't surgar coat it
is it a chore?
>>
>>290498291
It's a blast. If you enjoyed the first OVA you'll enjoy the show
>>
>>290498291
It's a slice of life with mecha, make of that what you will.
>>
>>290498291
The first OVA's are (for the most part) really slow and dry. Comfy and enjoyable, the plots are silly and kinda Scooby-Doo esque. Like the first OVA's, the first two Patlabor movies were directed by Oshii and are also really slow, but have some phenomenal sequences and visuals. Patlabor on Television is a lot more fun and has lots of great action. A good mix between characters doing stuff outside of mechs and mechs beating the hell out of each other.

If you got bored watching the first OVA series, just jump into TV before deciding if you wanna ditch it or not. The movies may have their own value for the visuals alone as well.

The OVAs are comfy goofy policemen hijinks. Only 7 episodes so it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Movie 1 is KINO. Movie 2 is an Oshii masturbation session.

TV is like the OVA but 63 episodes, which can be an issue unless you reaaaaally dig the setting and characters since there isn't really an overarching plot, character development or variety in its episodes. I mean there is some sort of antagonist but that entire plotline sucked balls.

Forgot to add the watching order:
>OVAs -> Movie -> Movie 2
Alt. timeline
>TV Series -> New OVAs

It's a largely episodic cop show with characters who have easily readable personalities. It's terrific.
>>
>>290498505
>Movie 2 is an Oshii masturbation session
Movie 1 is like that too, though the characters are more true to themselves. I hate Oshii's masturbation projects but I still somehow like Movie 2 more just for the sheer volume of sick sequences and great visuals even during mundane expository shots. The intro, kill Wyvern, the occupation of the city, etc will stick with me until I'm dead and I cannot remember half of the plot to the movie.
>>
>>290498610
It's Oshii saying that Japan should re-arm and get a proper military and stop messing around.

In the novelization of the Patlabor 2 the movie written by Oshii himself, Ota leaves two suicide notes in his room, one addressed to his parents and the other to Kanuka.

My big problem is that many of the characters are largely comedy characters, and they're great when they're being dummies and screwing around. When it gets "serious", half the characters have nothing to do. Ohta in particular sticks out like a sore thumb being a completely comedy driven character who otherwise doesn't have anything other to do than shout, shoot, and screw up, so he kind of lightly keeps doing that anyway while everyone's trying to be serious and not do anything funny.

I like tonal shifts but these characters just evaporate in favor of the more serious ones who get the major focus in these stories. This gets even worse because oshii doesn't even like them and will cut their scenes in favor of his picks.

It's a Rumiko series just not authored by Rumiko. Ohta is just Onsen Mark, and he was a joke in Urusei Yatsura. It's the UY cast plus the Maison Ikkoku cast. Oshii has said he considers Patlabor a continuation of UY.

No, it's Oshii saying he was against Japan sending soldiers to Cambodia.
>>
>>290505988
The soldiers are not cleared to attack (which was common in 90s peace keeping missions), and were woefully underequipped and manned. That was what caused the guy's frustrations to begin with and made him launch his coup. Oshii probably is rejoicing that Japan is finally starting to get its military back.

I'm completely biased since I binged the TV series while recovering from surgery, but life would feel like it was missing something without Patlabor.

Watch the 8-eps OVA and maybe the first movie. If you like it, watch the rest. If not, then drop the series, because it doesn't change later on.
>>
>>290498526
She's so pretty.
>>
>>290498291
It depends. The show gives you the impression its going to be a somewhat realistic take on if there was a mech police unit but most of the OVA and TV series is comedy SoL and realism is thrown right out the window, yet the movies are ultra realistic to the point of requesting permission to engage a target.

The movies are actually symbolic to a mythological degree, they do this shit as a way to demonstrate the individual's reliance upon a whole network of people whose perceptions can be manipulated, making belief a crucial part of the setting

>>290521623
Iirc the other members of Headgear picked Oshii to be the director of Patlabor. Meaning the original concept is not Oshii's. The first film has his touch more but the script is still by Ito. The second film is pure Oshii (which is why it sucks). For the TV series there are a couple of Oshii episodes which are decent and amongst the more memorable ones.
