I will say this as much: I'm glad Science Saru adapts the manga version of GITS because it exposes its mediocrity in all its glory from the technobabble to the cringe-worthy anime-style humor. May this be a lesson to weebs who think faithfully adapting a source material makes for a great adaption, IT DOESN'T!!A GREAT adaptation changes the original material to fit a new art form. Copying a story word for word or scene for scene nore often than not fails because different mediums work in DIFFERENT WAYS!!The Shining? Stephen King is the epitome of human mediocrity but Stanley Kubrick elevated what was a mediocre novel into one of the greatest horror movies ever made.The Lord of the Rings? Peter Jackson took a dense epic fantasy and turned it into a concise trilogy. Those three movies are now considered one of the greatest film trilogies EVER.Shrek? More than half of the population probably doesn't even know that Shrek started off as an obscure children's book. And that movie is one of the greatest animated movies ever made PERIOD.Jurassic Park? The dialogue was robotic, and consisted of too many expository info dumps. Then came Steven Spielberg and he did his magic, and now that movie is considered one of the greatest movies ever made and birthed a multi billion dollar franchise, just like Oshii did with that mediocre technobabble manga by Shirow and turning it into one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made PERIOD!Shirow owes his entire career to Oshii and thanks to him, he can retire and do what he likes doing most (like making blacked porn).>t. someone who actually attended film school and studied screenwriting

It does a fine job for a TV show that tries to create a world similar to the movie on a much lower budget per minute of animation but the loss is noticeable. Pound for pound the new series has a lot more detail packed in per scene than SAC, you just personally dislike its less realistic, more colorful 80's manga style.

We still sometimes, very few times, get remarkable stuff albeit, granted, after Japan economy stagnated and OVA disappeared as a format authorish stuff lost ground and became extremely rare. You´d never get stuff like Tenshi no Tamago or Memories today. Budgets are smaller and some skills and styles are phased out or forgotten because, from the perspective of animation as a job, there is little point in developing or polishing techniques that won´t be used. Not to mention animators these days just won´t have the same opportunities the old guard had.

The problem is that like 95% of media runs the gambit from mediocre to shit with the last 5% being the gold. When it comes to anime, TV, movies, music, games, what have you, we in the current decade are standing in the firehose of shit with our mouths open and because of that, modern anime feels like slop. Go 20 years from now, no one will talk about the 20 garbage Isekai "kicked from the party but I'm secretly the strongest" slop we get every year and the 2020's will be remembered for that 5% just like the 2010's and the 90's and the 80's.

So there's a bias due to availability. That said, just because most of 2020s anime is complete garbage doesn't mean that all of it is. And just because you want to make up a pretend war doesn't mean that most people enjoying GitS can enjoy both.
