Reminder that in chapter 13.2 the Nephew finds a male doll in a barnacle box. So Dollmaker and Apprentice evidently tried the same thing that was done to Aunt. Dollmaker and Aunt aren't around in the present, only Apprentice and Nephew, so something clearly goes wrong.
