Kabru's character aside, I like what he brings to the table in terms of talking about society around the dungeon. Michbell is probably 16 or something, by the time he was brought up Chilchuck already united his people and delivered them from evil. Give it a couple years when the half foot education system puts Chilchuck as one of the first civil rights activists that gave their people a voice to express how they don't want to get eaten by monsters and that'll shut these youngsters up. They'll probably put a statue up of Chilchuck on the island, with an epitaph like beater of the eater of all things horrible

Mickbell comes across as way shadier than Chilchuck in any case, so I don't necessarily trust his opinion on the matter.
>>
>>290540843
To be fair, his analysis of Laios is correct. In fact, it makes no sense to dislike the character simply because someone has accurately analyzed the protagonist's flaws.
>>
>>290542224
I can't believe there were fools who, upon seeing the look of disgust and horror on FemShuro's face in this manga, declared, "My god, it seems Shuro would have fallen for Laios if the genders were swapped; his love for Falin must have just been an autism fetish." There are truly immature people in this world who are either even more incapable of reading the room than Laios, or simply willing to completely misinterpret the story just to bash a character they dislike.

He punched Laios, teaching him to pay attention to how others feel. He gave Laios the Resonance Bell, sharing his location with Kabru. Without these actions—and without Kabru punching Laios to show him that there were people who took an interest in him—Laios would have become the Demon King. Thus, these two are indispensable friends who shaped Laios's ultimate fate.
>>
>>290543835
It is not as though he has caused no trouble for anyone. Laios is admonished by the Orc chieftain for the folly of adventuring without regard for the consequences, and he vows to henceforth consider the true meaning of exploring the dungeon. At this stage, the criticism is valid: because Laios lacks interest in the people around him, he is—in effect—no different from the island lord who fattened up the monsters, acting even worse than the most unscrupulous adventurers.

What Kabru wanted to expose was not that they were "evil," but rather that—much like the Island Load—they lacked interest in humans, and consequently brought about calamity through their own good intentions. Given what ultimately befell Falin, one should consider Kabru’s objective achieved.
It is only later that Laios becomes interested in humans and begins to consider the outcomes of things.

That is certainly not the case; the situation is clear. Laios himself states that things would be worse and FemShuro wears an unmistakable look of disgust and the women of the party criticize Laios. The fact that Laios’s harassment of Shuro was acknowledged yet tacitly accepted within the party was solely because they were both men; the narrative implies that had Shuro been a woman, the behavior—including sexual harassment—would have become a major issue. Anyone who looks at this and thinks there is "room to interpret FemShuro as having romantic feelings for Laios" simply lacks the ability to read and understand Japanese manga.

>>
>>290544526
In the context of shojo manga, if only FemShuro harbored feelings for Laios—and assuming the other girls didn't share that sentiment—the version of Laios she imagined would be depicted as exceptionally handsome. Yet, in this scene, the image of Laios that comes to mind for all three women is a repulsive one. This implies that a shared perception of Laios as "creepy" or "gross" exists among them. It seems you haven't really read much shojo manga.

>>
>>290544788
Fem Shuro's image of Laios is clearly more favorable then compared to Marcille or even Farlin though. The blush is clearly of a maiden in love no question. Like if Kabru was in the party he would be the cool kind fellow with a dark past who gets his shirt wet and transparent, but Laios would be the winner who acts atypically of the hunky boy sterotypes that win the girl over regardless.

>the image of Laios that comes to mind for all three women is a repulsive one
How is that repulsive? That's just a simplified Laios, sure it looks dopey but since the little scene is implying he said/did something dopey that the 3 are discussing, that fits. FemShuro is relaying that it happened and is embarrassed about it (could be flustered embarrassed or got the ick embarrassed, we'll never know), Marcille loves this kind of drama as we'll learn later which is why she's acting surprised but excited, and Falin is in full "It's over" because she's assuming the worst case scenario since she's been through a lot of those with him.
>>
>>290545153
I'd always read that panel as Shuro seeking counsel with the girls (perhaps with some shame) and admitting her feelings for Laios, to which Marcille reacts with shock (Laios? That guy? How!?) and Falin with worry (Oh poor you, you've got your work cut out for you...)
It's the first time I hear of anyone seeing something else there. Even looking for it now, the only reaction I could possibly see as disgust is Falin's.

It is a misinterpretation to insist that the exact same facial expression signifies affection in one instance and disgust in another based merely on form. Everyone shares the same opinion regarding Laios, and that sentiment is clearly one of disgust, not affection. The fact that FemShuro’s expression is less exaggerated simply implies that she conveyed her feelings in a more restrained and polite manner. It is simplistic to claim that a flushed face automatically equates to a look of love. I cannot speak for conventions abroad, but in Japanese manga, emotional tears often accompany a blush—a pattern followed in this work as well. If the artist intended to depict the kind of romantic expression you are imagining, they would not have drawn tears around the eyes, and the corners of the mouth would be turned up. Does this expression look like a look of love, too?

>>
>>290545361
>>290545378
That contradicts Laios's realization that the outcome would be worse (even compared to the scenario where Shuro was a man).
>>
>>290545834
To be honest, I think Laios wouldn't respond well to a romantic situation, either.
>Looks like that just made the situation worse
would likely be his response to any number of outcomes.
>>
>>290545834T
He says it looks worse, from his perspective. That doesn't preclude romance. In the words of Chilchuck romance in the party is always bad.
>>
>>290545834
Didn't their party almost fell apart before the manga starts because their mage tried courting Laios? That would absolutely be a worse situation in his eyes.
>>
>>290545927
>>290545974
If that is the reason, then what is reflected in the mirror would be the scene where the party collapses due to FemShuro's presence. In this chapter, the scene itself is written as a "bad ending." That is a convoluted misinterpretation.
>>
>>290546165
Such a scene wouldn't explain to the reader why Shuro being female would lead to the party collapse. That's why it's this scene instead.
>>

>It is a misinterpretation to insist that the exact same facial expression signifies affection in one instance and disgust in another based merely on form.
When things are portrayed differently it is common sense to say it's for a reason, clearly Marille and Falin have different reactions that are not just disgust that is based on forms
It's simplistic to say it's a response of disgust, Failn his sister has the greatest response even compared to Marcille who usually has the larger disgust response which indicates that her response is one of confusion or some other emotion. Why would Falin be the most shocked? It's clear by the text that she's shocked that another woman is courting her brother.
>If the artist intended to depict the kind of romantic expression you are imagining, they would not have drawn tears around the eyes, and the corners of the mouth would be turned up
Bashful confessions where the girl is embarrassed would not always be accompanied by a smile, if the artist intended to have an explicit romantic expression you can have a smile but tears in the eyes just mean emotional by most conventions, not necessarily romantic but it doesn't discount it by any measure.
>>290546165
Frankly nether Namari or senshi is explicitly about the party breaking up, for all you know senshi being motherly could still have her help the group out. Marcille and Falin being male is as much of hamper and explicit party dissolution as Shuro being a women so assuming that every scene must be one where the party explicit collapses on panel is a convoluted misinterpretation
>>
>>290546236
If it hasn't been explained, it cannot serve as a substitute. The conclusion of this scene lies within the scene itself. The reasons why the outcome is worse are depicted right there: the kind of harassment Laios engaged in would be unacceptable with a member of the opposite sex, yet it was tolerated here because Shuro is of the same sex. That fact *is* the conclusion of the scene.
>>
>>290546413

Kui does a good job at writing interconnected interpersonal drama without it devolving into love polyhedrons. Gotta applaud her for that.
>>
>>290546409
This phrasing conveys that, even while displaying the same sense of revulsion, FemShuro expressed herself politely—a demeanor that remained unchanged even when he was male. The mirror altered only the gender; Shuro harbors the same feelings of disgust toward Laios regardless of whether he is male or female, but the way those around him perceive that behavior changes.

Falin is well aware of Laios's social ineptitude. If she were to hear that her brother had engaged in inappropriate behavior toward a woman, it would be only natural for her to turn pale and think, "He's finally done it."

I fail to understand why you persist in claiming that "it has not been denied that she harbors affection for this man," even after witnessing a scene where a woman—her face flushed with emotion, eyes welling with tears, and brows furrowed (yet without the slightest upturn of her lips)—shares the image of a man—depicted not in an idealized light, but as a grotesque figure—with a woman consumed by anger and sorrow.

For my part, I have been arguing that interpreting this scene as a sign of the party's collapse is a convoluted misreading—and I am glad to see we agree on that point.

Because the image of Laios isn't grotesque and I wouldn't call any of the characters feeling anger or sorrow in that panel. You can like a person and still be conflicted about it, in other words saying ""look at how not happy Female Shuro is" isn't enough to discount romantic undertones. All those expressions that you pointed out can very easily be seen as romantic not disgusted, if a character in a manga were to find someone charming and annoying at the same time and were written to eventually develop romantic feelings these welling tears and furrowed brow with a flush is a sign of romantic feelings not disgust.
For example this panel I've posted is a romantic image, it's tinged with discontent and inner conflict but it is a romantic image on the whole. It's not a smile it's a lopsided expression, it's got a frow, it's got a blush, it's not a whole sale pure romantic expression but that does not discount the clearly romantic intent from the author.
>Falin is well aware of Laios's social ineptitude. If she were to hear that her brother had engaged in inappropriate behavior toward a woman, it would be only natural for her to turn pale and think, "He's finally done it."
Falin is on the same level as Laios she just talks less, and her very nature would preclude the thought that Laios would be capable of something like that, in this very chapter dump it's shown how void of human understanding both siblings have. Falin would humor the moon being made of cheese more then her brother being a villain to anyone.

Laios' party is pretty stacked. All the tallmen are nobility, Namari and Marcille are both related to bigshots, and Chilchuck, despite having the humblest origins, has accomplished a lot in a short span of time.

>>290547095
The girl in the image isn't teary-eyed, so she isn't blushing from crying, nor is she sharing an image of a creepy man with the person she's talking to; instead, the distinct upturn at the right corner of her mouth clearly conveys a hint of a smile. If you think that expression is the same as the one worn by that FemShuro, then you are simply insensitive to the nuances of facial expressions in Japanese manga.

Falin makes friends at school and, above all, is capable of considering the feelings of others. That is precisely the difference between Falin and Laios, and the reason why Shuro likes Falin but dislikes Laios. Falin joined the adventure because she foresaw that Laios would otherwise meet his ruin; she understands that he often upsets others without any malicious intent. This is evident in the side story where Chilchuck points out, "Ask him if someone who can't get along with people can really get along with monsters."

Upon seeing the suggestion that, had Laios been a woman, he wouldn't have been able to enter boarding school or the military—or even had the chance to leave his village—do you really think a woman would have set out alone on a journey through a world teeming with monsters and bandits?
That is a rather "fantasy" notion.

It looks like a bit of a gag—the idea that Senshi would be more readily accepted as the proprietress of a set-meal diner if he were a woman—but does that strike you as odd?
It’s not that Senshi dislikes people; in fact, he actually wanted to serve monster cuisine to others whenever the opportunity arose.

>Falin makes friends at school
A large part of her backstory is Falin being a loner who spent time away instead of doing school work
>Falin joined the adventure because she foresaw that Laios would otherwise meet his ruin
She abandoned her education because she wants to go on an adventure/follow her brother, not because she "foresaw" Laios ruin
>she understands that he often upsets others without any malicious intent
Which is why her reaction being "He's finally done it." wouldn't make any sense
>nor is she sharing an image of a creepy man with the person she's talking to
Creepy man? Maybe Marcille but that's a stretch with the evidence provided
>instead, the distinct upturn at the right corner of her mouth clearly conveys a hint of a smile
Lopsided expression is not hinting at a smile, it's literally an expression of apprehension are you ignorant of the nuances of facial expressions in Japanese manga. My point isn't that the expression is the same, my point is that various physical expressions can have more then one meaning. I'm not saying you CAN'T interpret that the panel is about Femshuro complaining about Laios but discounting a romantic interpretation overreaching with the available evidence

Where's your evidence that a female Laios couldn't have done any of these things, we see female adventurers including just being a tallman fighter.
>do you really think a woman would have set out alone on a journey through a world teeming with monsters and bandits?
If she was Laios? Yes, he literally essentially was a bum on the streets for a large section of time, where's your evidence for making sense large assumptions for the dungeon meshi world which is very fantasy.
>It’s not that Senshi dislikes people; in fact, he actually wanted to serve monster cuisine to others whenever the opportunity arose.
Senshi dislikes people flooding into the dungeon and wants to live off the dungeon. Either the restaurants his female version is on the surface which means he isn't living off the dungeon anymore or it is in the dungeon which therefore would attract more people and worsen the ecosystem of the dungeon/ if she's too busy cooking who is taking care of the dungeon which is a core part of the personality.

There's a recurring aspect of a lot of the gag pages is that they dwell a fair bit more on laios's thoughts and feelings and him knowing that everyone sees him as a weirdo that no one would miss (except Falin).
I feel like what Kui was getting at, at least partially, with the mirror thing was that Laios was interpreting things worse than they would have been for various reasons. The Femshuro panel specifically was made in a way to have the readers interpret what was going on for the sake of the gag. The anon talking about Laios sexually harassing Femshuro is off his damn rocker. At worst, he would have done something completely innocent that she would have maybe seen as weird because part of Shuro's character in general is that he's polite and very, very uncomfortable with damn near everything.
>>
>>290542224
Alright since you autists are literally retarded and can't understand what human expressions convey
>FemShuro
The expression is embarrassment, not disgust, horror, or arousal. Her lips are pursed, not upturn. Given how his relationship with MaleShuro went, Laius likely said something inappropriate or got too familiar with FemShuro under the assumption that they're friends. They are not.

Being female in this AU, instead of bottling up her frustration until it explodes into violence she has gone to gossip about Laius with other women.
>Marcille
The expression is shock and confusion. Her mental image of Laius here has shady eye bags, making him appear depraved or manic. FemShuro likely does not have a charitable interpretation of whatever Laius did or said, and Marcille is surprised.
>Farlyn
The expression is extreme disappointment. She understands her brother best and usually translates the real intentions behind his clumsy statements, her Laius doesn't have the shady eyes. However it was probably bad enough that she will have a hard time smoothing things over.

The Adventurer's Bible depicts scenes where Falin is surrounded by friends, whereas Laios is shown as isolated. Furthermore, a letter from Falin mentions that magic school became enjoyable only after she made friends; while Marcille was her first friend, she was not her only one. Upon graduation, Falin had already secured a position as a town gravedigger—a stable, well-paid profession that commanded respect—portraying her as someone who had achieved social success.

>>290547913
Laios was a loser who had been bullied at school for his rudeness and had deserted the army.
His success was built upon his knowledge of and fascination with monsters; had he achieved this while remaining indifferent to other people, he would likely have ended up as a Demon King. That future was altered by two friends—one who punched him while telling him to be more mindful of how others felt, and another who punched him while saying, "I wanted to be friends with you."
This story is about his growth.
It is precisely because he is capable of accepting such advice that he is a "good person."

>>290548931
>>290548953
Yeah, it feels like she had an idea for a foil for Laios that focused on humans instead of monsters, but determining what his actual role in the story was took a few chapters.

Like in this chapter it feels like the set up is that Kabru is an enemy the party can't just beat up to defeat. Even if Laios' party beats Kabru's (not guaranteed, we see in this chapter Kabru is as good against humans as Laios is against monsters) no one in Laios' party is going to leave them dead, so Kabru can go back to town and badmouth them. But at the same time, Laios would barely care about that in the beginning, let alone after Farlyn's been dragged off to parts unknown.

So then Kui spends a few chapters using Kabru to explore the town and society around the dungeon, which is a good place for him before the Canaries show up and Kabru becomes a care worker, in addition to becoming Laios' high-CHA pal

It seems you haven't read The Adventurer's Bible either.

The reason Falin set out on the journey with Laios was that, seeing him in such a wretched state, she felt that if they parted ways there, she would never see him again. It is a mistake to attribute this to her own personal desires.

Furthermore, what she gave up wasn't her studies, but a job opportunity.

Besides, I know more about the conventions of Japanese manga than you do. Whether male or female, Shuro harbors the exact same feelings of aversion toward Laios. Laios is careless, insensitive, and has terrible timing. Your counterargument is nothing more than a rationalization forced upon the story to inject a romance element that isn't there.

If the author had wanted to show that the reason the female Laios couldn't leave the village was a lack of will rather than her circumstances, she would have been depicted smiling while holding a baby.
Laios was only able to lead a wandering life because he was a man.

> His restaurant is on the surface.

I’m starting to wonder if we’re even reading the same manga.
>>
>>290549540
Of course I like him, but what I meant to say was that this affection is rooted in his willingness to accept his own flaws and strive to improve. I’m saying that I didn’t like Laios at first—he’s the type of character who wins you over through classic personal growth.

>Furthermore, what she gave up wasn't her studies, but a job opportunity.
Sure, ok. I saw your panel with Falin having friends after Marcille. I'll just take your word at face value that she left to help her brother, frankly job opportunity and studies aren't a distinction I would make and dismissing all her other desires outside of helping her brother is ignoring her other character traits but whatever. But bringing Falin up to begin with was to comment on the nature of her response, and frankly even taking your points about their differences there's still not enough evidence to justify your interpretation of her reponse.
>Besides, I know more about the conventions of Japanese manga than you do. Whether male or female, Shuro harbors the exact same feelings of aversion toward Laios. Ok, prove that Kui follows this convention of japanese manga so stringently you know so well to the point that you can be so sure that a textless panel with just facial expressions has only one possible interpretation. What are those conventions and show evidence in other manga to back your claims. You repeatedly bring in this wide sweeping generalization based on some kind of expertise, and frankly I've read a lot of manga and a lot of other people who think that panel is romantic has probably read a lot of manga saw romantic subtext. You have to give a coherent explanation of all this if you want to actually make an argument outside "I know better". Not to say there's been no coherent argument but incessantly spouting off about conventions isn't one of them.

Why. If Female Laios had no will compared to Male Laios and didn't go out into an adventure means she HAS to have a smile at her situation? Or she can still frown because she's in a marriage she didn't want that not only circumstances brought but also a personal attitude that could have changed and not just gender? Oh wait, let me guess. Conventions. Great.
>Do you actually think there’s a tent pitched on the surface with "Dungeon Diner" written on it?

Everything is exactly as explained above. The blushing is caused by tears; as proof, I have attached an image from the story showing Marcille blushing while shedding tears. There is no smile on her face, and the mental image she holds of Laios is no different from how others see him—it lacks the overly idealized depiction often found in manga. In that very scene, Laios himself remarks that the outcome would be worse. There is absolutely no basis here to infer romantic affection. Demanding proof that such a basis *doesn't* exist is nothing more than sophistry. It is simply a case of someone new to Japanese manga misunderstanding the "blushing" trope and refusing to admit their error.

If you claim that Fem-Laios wouldn't want to go on an adventure, then my assertion—that this manga simply swapped genders without altering the characters' personalities—proves to be correct. Furthermore, the male Senshi makes no attempt to drive out new adventurers who enter the dungeon, even when environmental changes occur, such as a decrease in the golem population. The idea that Fem-Senshi would never open a restaurant inside the labyrinth is a delusion based on your own misinterpretation. After all, this chapter was created as part of a magazine's gender-swap project; the very notion that their personalities might differ drastically from the originals—and not just their genders—is a baseless, far-fetched rationalization.

Good question. In hindsight, maybe it would have been good to have the characters make an offhand remark about how long it usually takes to to reach, say, the castle town or the 3rd level, as they estimate their chances to reach Falin in time. That or maybe include some way to keep track of time, but that doesn't mean much if we lack a frame of reference.

We've gotten through exactly this first page of the timeline
Nine days have passed since the story started. Our guys have been stopping for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus snacks every day
The only real stumbling block they've hit is the undine wiping out Marcille's HP and MP

It's interesting to note that these Kabru chapters are taking place four days ago
>>
>>290540843
Kabru's mindset is that everyone everywhere has goals and a plan to achieve them and would only act in service to these ends. Laios, for the most part, just does things because he likes it or to just be nice. Kabru thinks that he's pretending to cover up his "true" goals. He's so used to dealing with selfish people that when he meets a selfless autist he thinks it's a bit.

To make it weirder though, it seems like the "male" flowers are actually the ones with boobs, and the "female" flower has male proportions. Only the ones with breasts release pollen (containing the male sperm cells) when cut, and when the last one is decapitated, you can see a pistil-like structure (a flower's female reproductive end) here >>290568748

They took at least two shortcut
One with the living armor and painting that's probably only accessible if you have veteran half-foot that know how to handle all the traps
And then another one by the guidance of the orc that leads straight to red dragon's floor, I think it's the tentacle staircase

I don't think Shuro can handle either of those shortcut, the former because I don't think they have anyone as skilled as Chil, and the latter because Orc too savage to tell others about their shortcut, also no anti-tentacle counter-measure.

He doesn't dislike them, he's just way too much of a drama obsessed weirdo and imagined all these scandals around them that either weren't real or weren't their fault. He usually acts very upbeat but in reality he's quite a pessimistic person who tends to instinctively distrust people until he gets to know them more.

But since Laios never really spoke to him, he never came to understand how he thinks. Its only after they have their talk about chimera Falin's weaknesses later that he realizes Laios's true nature and how its nothing like he thought. (and by extension, its the point where he starts actively trying to help Laios conquer the dungeon.

Yes, Mithrun says as much too. The dungeon will intentionally shift to try and lure people further in, and if you have a strong desire for food or shelter, it'll usually have some kind of pathway to it be made more obvious.

It seemingly does all that without the DM's notice, so its definitely the lion subtly tweaking things.

>>
>>290580955
This is why Kui's world building is so good. She both avoids actually giving out a set answer but doesn't actually avoid that this is definitely fucking something humans (speaking in the broad sense that it covers in DM) would try to figure out but more importantly that this would skeeve out even some hardened criminals.

The real power of DM's lore is not in the particular answers, but the ways in which it informs our understandings of the characters and helps both explain but also complicate their actions.
>>
>>290585428
Thanks, ChatGPT.
>>
>>290585153
The explanation we're given, which is mostly suppositions by the cast so it's unclear how close to the truth it is, is that hybrids are essentially recreating humanity from before the various demon wishes resulted in splitting them into the different races. Like the other anon said, this is variable, so not all hybrids will live the 1000 years Marcille expects, but it's still a reflection of a kind of "atavistic" throwback to an earlier period.

>>290568535
When you think about it, that dryad straight stab is one of the most fatal attack in the entire dungeon. It's very simple, very deadly, used by someone very fast and agile with near-human battle reflexes, nothing like the average slow and dumb monsters with non-fatal attacks. In term of danger they represent, Dryads outclasses every "mob" monsters so far in lethality, only unique boss monsters like the dragon/kraken/living armors, special encounters tied to a specific area, are potentially more dangerous than these flower motherfuckers running up to you and insta-stabbing you in the chest with shapeshifting extra long arm spike, instant death for anyone not wearing plate armor like Laios. I doubt chain mail would do a thing here, it'll just pop one ring and go through.

I guess their one big weakness is cheap ranged attacks. These dryads are basically suicide troops that are extra fatal in melee, explodes with AoE debuff when killed, but have zero defence and 1 HP. Laios' party notably lacks a bow-and-arrow type character who can deal with this glass cannon bullshit, which made this encounter overwhelmingly more dangerous it should have been for another more balanced party. Being caught by surprise certainly didn't help. If these things spent their time fucking then you even get one or two free shots at them in normal circumstances!

Nah, I think it would be more fitting to say that Laios got Marcille in his party through high LUCK stat. Marcille is an above average magic user (most likely) but she wanted to study forbidden magic and therefore she would only join a party that has a leader that would cover up her heinous crimes. Thus she ventured with Farlin's brother since Laios would definitely omit reporting Marcille on Farlin's request. Plus she probably only planned going around studying strange runes and copying incantations, she ended up drawing way too much attention to her but originally she probably didn't plan to do anything too obvious and having both Thordens vouch for her would have been her safety net.

I wonder what Marcille tastes like

He's only been ranging up to the water level so this is all understandably new to him.

Let's be real. The party has no time collecting worms for a meal, let alone a snack.
