Done. I understand why the grannies had to stick to this ending, but it still hurts, after all this time.
I have to admit, I'm a huge nintendofag, and Zelda has been a companion to me since forever, so I can't really be objective about this, but i love it so much. Especially Twilight Princess, which was basically my most played gamecube title. I think the manga stuck the landing pretty well, all things considered, and I hope it was a good read even for newbies to the franchise.
Did you like the manga? Favorite chapter? Favorite character? What could it have done better? What did you love and what did you hate? Any lingering thoughts?
See you tomorrow! i will start dumping Genshiken!

Even if this adaptation were the worst trash imaginable, it would have been worth it just for this moment. Fans utterly serviced. (low key a majora-esque sequel with Link looking for Midna like OoT Link looking for navi would have been the sickest shit, and trading that for Link's crossbow training was peak ninty retardation)

Thanks, OP. I think the ending is just perfect, actually. Instead of Link fucking off into the distance you get a much clearer sense that he has more adventure in his future with the Hero of Time getting some final closure in too. This is still probably the best manga I've read.
Favorite chapter is hard to pin down. Probably Link's pep talk while he was recovering. What they did with Bulblin was also fantastic though, making him a proper character was so perfect so his chapters were always high points.
>>
>>290541969
>and trading that for Link's crossbow training was peak ninty retardation
You have to understand that never ever have Nintendo set out with developing a game to tell a specific story. What they do is they come up with a gameplay idea first and then come up with a story that services that gameplay idea. Nintendo just doesn't do story sequels for the sake of story sequelsy for better and for worse.

Some people say TP is, as a game, as weak as it is BECAUSE it kind of feels like a story-first type of game. The wolf transformation is really undercooked when it comes to gameplay.
>>
>>290541835
Cards on the table: This adaptation gave me a better respect both for the game and for Midna.
>>
>>290541835
That was great one of the best videogames adaptations, still like PokeSpe better though
>>
>>290542082
Meanwhile the two core things that I think have to be nailed to make a Zelda game a Zelda game are the story, and the dungeons. And TP nailed both.

But what they did with Ganondorf was also great, making him a malevolent powerhouse instead of just the Bad Guy™ that shows up at the end. His little tea chat with Zelda was peak villain.
This manga is the kind of thing that influences how I think certain characters or tropes ought to be. Even if Link and Midna didn't get it on it's still basically perfect.

Great manga, I think it's very unfortunate it had to be TP of all games to get this treatment because the story structure of the game really fucks it over
Even with the vastly expended characters, OoT hijacking the plot still sticks out like a sore thumb, even the whole "role" and karma thematic that has been the go to dynamic of Link / Zelda / Ganon since SS doesn't really mesh well with what the TP side tries to say
I enjoyed Ganondorf (I actually like his characterization here more than I do in WW) but it really convinces me he shouldn't have been in the story at all
Midna got a lot of love but her playing spectator mode once the OoT side of the story gets into the mix doesn't sit right with me

TP Link got a pretty stellar treatment in this though, really impressed with what they did with him

>Nintendo just doesn't do story sequels for the sake of story sequelsy for better and for worse.
They made MM the same Link when they didn't have to, made 2 direct WW sequels just for an excuse to reuse toon Link, and made a game literally called "Triforce of the Gods 2." That is their most flimsy rule.
>>
>>290542529
I disagree. Link's Awakening has a great story, so does Ocarina, Majora, WW, TP... if you'd criticize them for being "minimalist", then I hope you'd have a negative opinion about BOTW and especially TOTK. They're minimalist to bad and you don't even get legit dungeons. I've never played Zelda for collectables, I play it for the stories and dungeons. That's the main reason why I've been dissatisfied with the series for the past decade.

>Did you like the manga?
It was okay. It does a good job of fleshing out the side characters and main plot but I think it does a real disservice to the dungeons and the bosses. It works as a good companion piece to read alongside playing the game but not as a standalone manga for me.
>Favorite chapter?
Ganondorf's tea party or Link getting high on courage.
>Favorite character?
King Bulblin
>What could it have done better?
Not much, limitations of being a game adaptation unfortunately. Show King Bulblin riding around Hyrule field at the end like in the TP credits I guess.
>Any lingering thoughts?
TP as a game is too slow for me despite having some very memorable dungeons. I'd rather play OoT or MM.

They didn't have to, but they didn't make a OoT sequel because they had a story in mind they wanted to tell either. They made a game about time loops and said "might aswell make it an OoT sequel"
>made 2 direct WW sequels just for an excuse to reuse toon Link
They wanted a DS Zelda, and since the DS could only render low poly stuff they decided to just make it an WW sequel. Then they wanted to make a train Zelda and since it's on the DS aswell, they re-used the graphics. Is this even a WW sequel? It just looks similar.
>and made a game literally called "Triforce of the Gods 2."
And you think they made that game with the goal of continuing the story line of ALttP? They made that game because they had a wall merging idea.
>That is their most flimsy rule.
I'm not talkong about rules. I'm talking about design philosophy.

It is, just on the far future.
>>
>>290544755
>They made a game about time loops and said "might aswell make it an OoT sequel"
I have never heard of anything that confirms that order. For all we know it could've just as easily have been an OoT sequel they felt like making about a time loop.
>since the DS could only render low poly stuff they decided to just make it an WW sequel
They didn't have to. They were already using toon Link in the Capcom games at this point and those had no relation. This same point applies to Spirit Tracks as well.
>Is this even a WW sequel?
Niko from WW is literally the narrator of the intro.
>design philosophy
Semantics, the point is that never precluded them from doing a sequel if they wanted to.

Thanks for posting, OP. I wasn't blown away by the manga, but it was enjoyable. Though I was never a huge TP-fag, this was cool nonetheless.
The characters are obviously the strongest part, but that's the least you should expect when the dungeons and exploration get gutted like that. The pacing was kinda weird at times and I'm not sure I like all the manga-original additions, like Link's hometown being sucked into the Twilight Realm.
>Any lingering thoughts?

>Semantics, the point is that never precluded them from doing a sequel if they wanted to.
Then you don't get my point. My point isn't they don't make story sequels because they aren't allowed to - they are obviously allowed to do that. My point is that they don't make games for the sake of making story sequels. They make games that may or may not end up as story sequels, but wether they do is tertiary to the original reason of making the game. I hope that explains it better.

We don't have a TP sequel because Nintendo devs usually don't sit down to decide which storyline to continue. That's just not how they go about making these games.
>>
>>290545506
>but wether they do is tertiary to the original reason of making the game
That's what I've been arguing against the whole time. They (usually) start from a gimmick but certain entries were clearly meant to be sequels from their inception. It's not tertiary.

>Did you like the manga?
Yes, the Grannies did everything Nintendo would have allowed them to (and then some wrt to King Bulbin dying, Link eating Ganon's heart out, and the Kiss)
Favorite chapter?
I'm a sucker for the Snowpeak Ruins in-game and here, but the final chapter was really ballgame.
>Favorite character?
Midna
>What could it have done better?
Show the Clown Guy's multi-day fixing of the canon, Zant's Necksnap, let King Bulbin Live, those are all that stand out to me.
>What did you love and what did you hate? Any lingering thoughts?
Link's past with the disappearing village was an interesting add-on rather than him simply being an Ordon Village Native, the final confrontation arc with Ganon was very satisfying and did justice to the fight in the game. I also like how Shad & Ashei actually helped on their sections of the Mirror of Twilight segments which was an improvement over the source material. Auru was a dick here for no real reason other than drama-bait. I wish Malon and Ooccoo could have both gotten a little more panel time. Basically a wonderful adaption and while Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom are a clusterfuck storywise, I'd like to have a Echoes of Wisdom story adaption since it's simple narrative would be a great canvas for an adaption by the Grannies.
>>
>Beta Imp Midna sketches from Hyrule Historia
Well? What say you /a/?
>>
>>290545655
>but certain entries were clearly meant to be sequels from their inception
Depends on how you define inception, I suppose, but usually the cut scenes are made relatively late in development anyway.

That being said, even those that are direct sequels often don't have a whole lot to do with their prior game's story. MM plays out in a different land than OoT and just reuses some characters (while recycling all character models, but that has little impact on the story). PH takes place in a pocket dimension (I think? Been a while since I played it.) and ST is set atleast a century later. ALbW is a sequel to ALttP in name only, they really just share the map.

Funnily enough, TotK and Zelda 2 are the only Zelda sequels that really continue a storyline rather than just making a new one. Can't comment on the Oracle games though, still haven't gotten around to them.
>>
>>290545872
Love most of them, but those titties on the top right make me think of that comic about the designer of Midna being unable to not design a semen demon. Anyone have it?
>>
>>290545994
I think the Oracle games are technically sequels to ALttP, but it's the same deal as most of the others, they're in entirely different lands with entirely different people. Except Zelda and Ganon show up at the end if you play both games.
>>
>>290545872
Still would the middle-left and bottom-right, the rest are maybes.
>>
>>290546051
I like how freaky most of them are compared to the final design.
Middle Left and Bottom Middle are my personal favorites.
Finalized concept design sketches for reference.
>>
>>290545994
MM directly follows up on OoT's ending in Link's search for Navi and a lot of the game's theming revolves around it. PH connects through its intro/ending and so much of its DNA is ripped straight from WW. ST is the land the King spoke of in Wind Waker and has their grandchildren carry on their legacy.
>ALbW is a sequel to ALttP in name only, they really just share the map.
That's true but it's nearly identical as are a lot of aesthetics and mechanics.

yeah that's the only thing that makes the game's treatment of Illia and Zelda somewhat OK. Midna dominates the plot and development so much the other characters (girls) take a backseat, which ends up being a fair trade. It still makes it hard to get motivated to advance the plot early on. WW had a good beginning where you're dead set on saving your adorable sister

One thing that the manga doesn't capture is that Midna specifically says "see you later" which is what she says at the end of each section in the twilight after the Tears of Light have been gathered. So in the original game ending, I kind of assumed Link was seeking another way into the twilight to see Midna again, but in the manga end it seems like he’s accepting Midna’s decision and it’s more like he’s out adventuring to discover himself. Am I misreading that, and which one is more valid?
>>
>>290550078
Based on the number of OoT parallels I have to assume he's looking for Midna, especially in the manga when there's confirmed to be multiple other points of ingress.
>>
>>290542247
Eh, more or less story in the game kinda whatever and dungeons in TP are a mixed bag.
>>

They left it open for the player to decide like with everything else in the franchise.

To be fair, MM was only made because Miyamoto wanted a new Zelda ASAP after OoT. The original plan was I think the 64DD (disc drive modification for the N64) to have a rerelease or bonus version of OoT (think like a Switch 2 Edition). One of the game directors wanted to make a new game and was only allowed a year of dev time. This is why a lot of characters and assets are reused, why it has a time travel mechanic, and also why it is a sequel. Anything else would mean more dev time on concepts that they did not have. It's not because they wanted to make a time travel game or necessarily make a sequel. It was just the quickest way to make another 3D Zelda. Take this with a grain of salt though, I remember these details from half a decade ago.

>dungeons in TP are a mixed bag
You are undoubtedly in the minority there. Even the people who criticize TP always have to concede the dungeons being among the best in the series. Even the forest temple is more of a dungeon than the half measures from TOTK and the cookie-cutter beasts from BOTW.
>>
>>290550078
>>290550385
I think it can greatly be inferred that they were making a nod to what OoT did. OoT Link goes off to find Navi, TP Link goes off to find Midna. Just like OoT Link didn't want to just say goodbye to Navi, there's no way Link would be satisfied with Midna leaving. Half the reason this manga pushed Midna/Link so hard is because it just makes sense based on what you experience in the game, it isn't just about fanservice.
>>
>>290551563
Nah, he's right. The dungeons can be pretty fucking bad outside aesthetics. The only ones I'd call genuinely good are Lakebed and maybe Snowpeak.
>>
>>290551563
I believe SS has better dungeons. TP is probably WW tier when it comes to dungeons.
>>

I think you just hate the switch Zeldas kek.
>>290542247
>Meanwhile the two core things that I think have to be nailed to make a Zelda game a Zelda game are the story, and the dungeons
Wrong. It is combat, exploration, items, dungeons, music. In that order. Caring about Zelda stories is like caring about Mario stories.

Before reading this daily, I saw an edit of Midna fantasizing about marrying Link and how even though they couldn't have kids, they should still try. I am sad to find out it wasn't real, but damn does she want him to impale her darkness with his master sword a lot.

>Did you like the manga?
All in all, yes.
>Favorite chapter?
The one about Midna and Zelda's childhood.
>Favorite character?
Midna. It was nice watching her gradually warm up to Link and the World of Light.
>What could it have done better?
The pacing could have been more consistent.
>What did you love and what did you hate?
Loved Midna and Link's dynamic, hated how underwhelming a lot of the battles felt.
>Any lingering thoughts?
I really ought to get to playing the games.

>Why separate
to protect their worlds from each other. Ganondorf invaded the twilight realm and Zant invaded the light realm so it's just better to fully separate themselves.

SS had random puzzles/rooms that were absolutely incredible in its dungeons. But then the mandatory unfun BS had to creep in and fuck up other parts so no dungeon was ever just a good package the whole way through. TP had good to great dungeons with minimal stupid BS outside the initial tutorial handholding.

>Did you like the manga?
Pretty good. I've never played the game so this is my only experience with it
>Favorite chapter?
I liked the bit where they reunited with Link's pals in the twilight realm and his buddy lost his shit. That was pretty neat
>Favorite character?
Ganondorf
>What could it have done better?
Link and Midna marry and have 12 babies
>What did you love and what did you hate?
The answer to both is the action scenes; they could be real hit or miss
>Any lingering thoughts?
I think there are perils to any video game adaptation like this, things that just feel awkward in this medium, even if this case mostly handled things well. There were the occasional anons lamenting how this and that and so and so were cut out or skipped over, but from my perspective it feels like stuff like that is usually for the best.

All I'm saying is there should have a 100+ pages long chapter of Link trying to figure out the statue puzzle at the temple of time and losing his mind. It's unfaithful to the source material that he just waltz in.

Arbiter's Grounds is the main location with the ghost rats. The usual experience is getting slower and slower for some reason, turning into a wolf, and activating senses to see that you're totally swarmed while Midna tries to swat them away.
