I finally decided to catch up on NGO and just wanted to share my thoughts a bit. If anyone would like to talk about it, I'd love to have a thread. I have four episodes left to watch, having just watched the middle five recently. Basically, I just fell behind while it was airing and kept missing threads and episodes. After I let them pile up I just decided to put it off. I really liked the first four episodes, which were the ones I watched live, so I assumed that I would like the rest of the show similarly
HOWEVER! As the show started to explore the karamazov girls, I felt it got kinda boring, for lack of a better descriptor. Things were happening, and to a very very small extent I was able to empathize with them, but as a whole I just didn't connect with their backstories or felt they were all that intresting. The exception to this is the white hair big booba girl, I thought her backstory with her dad had the most intresting dynamic, thought not super original, but it was a very minor part of everything. Idk, I just feel like I don't resonate with the message it's trying to send, if there even really is one
I feel like the show is very much style over substance when it comes to most things it's trying to cover, and maybe it's because I'm not in-tune with glorious nihhononeese thousand folded society, but I don't really care for the social commentary>le we're all le terminally online>le only le followers matter and they're losers anyways lol!Idk, it just feels kinda empty to me because I'm not the kind of person that watches streamers religiously or is addicted to parasocial relationship (apart from my computer friends on /a/)One part I actually really liked was the scene in the cafe when Ame and the white hair girl were talking and they were surrounded by a bunch of different groups of people all having problems and being annoying and retarded, but at the end, they all left one by one and revealed that they weren't actually as bad as initially perceived, like the family who was arguing left happy, and those glorious thousand times folded office workers gave up on their complaining and left happy. It made it feel like there was actually more to the world than the online shit these main 5 girls are obsessed with, and THAT is probably the best bit of social commentary I've seen in the show. That people are capable of having normal offline lives. And since the show is trying to direct our attention to a specific way, it introduced all of those one-off characters with their follower counts, in order to call them npc's, BUT, at the end of the scene it didn't matter and you get the feeling like most of them are actually happier than ame and her rival retards
But despite that, I still feel like the show, atleast these middle five episodes I just watched, were mostly empty and honestly kind of pointless. Again, I really liked the early episodes when I was watching live. I especially liked Ame's backstory and how hard it leaned into her mental illness borne of childhood trauma. That felt pretty compelling. But then the middle of the show shifted focus almost completely to karamazov, who were, in my opinion, much less compelling. I think the reason why is because they actually don't feel mentally ill enough. The only one that really fits that bill is mitchica, the goth one, because she's obsessed with being beautiful and has the whole cutting herself schtick, but I can't really put my finger on WHY any of these three really want to usurp KAngel>mitchica wants to be the prettiest I guess>purple girl ???>white hair big booba just wants to support her friends ?The most recent ep I watched ended with them kinda becoming closer as friends, which was cool, I guess. So there is some character development, but idk it just feels like I'm missing something here.Am I being filtered or something? I genuinely feel like I understand what the show is going for and just don't find it all that intresting because of where they've chosen to focus the story.Maybe the last four episodes will change my mind, idk, but at the moment I mostly just feel dissapointed with how this is turning out, after enjoying the first four episodes alot
Could It be that I played myself by waiting so long and also missing all the weekly discussions? Idk. After watching these episodes, ironically despite my huge walls of text, don't feel like I have all that much to say about the show
As far as the animation and visual style, I think it's quite good. It does, however, lean into the black screen with captions schtick a little bit too much. Like, yeah, anything can sound profound if you throw the words up on screen like you're trying to be NGE. But other than that I enjoy the occasional aestheic vaporwave flair, and I REALLY like the use of mixed media. Like the long artsy scrne of those real life guys carrying the door, or KAngel going into an otaku's bedroom and unsubbing from all the other bitch ass streamers. Those bits were fun and neat and I wished it would have leaned more into that rather than crutching so hard on the text on screen gimmick
What are your thoughts? Am I being filtered in real time? Do I just not get it? Is there something I'm missing or is the show actually not that good when it comes to the writing and plot? Again, it just feels style over substance. I like style and don't mind that usually, so I am still enjoying watching it, but I feel like the show is just missing the mark on being an actual proper social commentary or being a character study of mentally ill streamers, which is what the first few episodes sold me on and didn't deliver- atleast not yet. I'm going to finish the show tomorrow to get it off my plate as it's been gnawing at me for an entire seasonWhat am I gonna think of it?
Ame sexo
I was there weekly and I mostly agree with your takes, the character vignettes were an interesting idea but ultimately not strong enough to carry the show and they should've found a more organic way to implement them into an actual natrative. Had I not experienced the game I'd have no idea who Ame is and why I should give a shit. More of a fun "vibes" watch than anything.>>290608408This post makes me think you probably will enjoy the last 4 eps a bit more.
Don't open this until you finish the last episode, but a cool little detail from the creator is that every time a morpho butterfly appears on the screen, a choice was made that "changed the route", presumably averting things that'd put them back on track for their bad endings
>>290609848Thanks for posting in my thread. Am going to report back after I finish if it's still up, but for now I'm going to sleep and expect the thread may archive in the meantime, as often happens with my threadsBut yeah your last sentence about this being a fun vibes watch sums up my thoughts pretty succinctly. After the first few episodes I expected the show to he something of a Zoomer Lain, but I don't think it comes anywhere near that level of depth and nuance. Lain is probably, objectively, one of the best animes ever ontop of having a distinct and clear visual style. While Needy Girl Overdose is almost all style without having all that much to ground it or make it worth deeper thought
I do vehemently disagree. The Karamazov exploration episodes were necessary setup while also actually exploring the themes. What was somewhat of an issue was how repetitive the show was about its core points. I didn't mind because I'm a smoothbrain who needs things to be hammered into my head repeatedly to stick. But I can see how it's a point of contention. For example, compare how Ame's own savior complex relates to Michika's superiority complex.Contrast this to the writers's other new work, Sister Other Paranoia. It suffers severely from a lack of character exploration, making every scene feel flat and the endings unearned. All things considered, I think it's a masterpiece whose briliance will only really shine in a decade as it gets rediscovered and praised for its accurate portrayal of being terminally online in this era.
The game was better.
Oh and if you find the time, read nyalra's Kumo, too. It tackles everything from a different direction.
>>290609982Well maybe I am wrong and did get filtered and upon rewatches I'll enjoy it more, idkI'm glad you liked it, in any case. I certainly didn't dislike it. I just don't think that it has as much to say as it thinks it has. Also one of the problems I had with the karamazov backstories was simply the structure of them. When those started, it felt like three episodes of the same thing in a row. It felt like they were getting the character set up out of the way by having 3 episodes in a row of nonstop backstory instead of them splitting those up with other things that could have happened. When it finally got into kache and michika fighting in the school, it felt like things were actually happening again but it was a bit of a slog to get thereI do want to say that I have spent the past couple hours reading through the threads from episode airing days, and have come away with a SLIGHTLY higher opinion of the episodes and show as a whole, but not by that much. Meaning I don't suddenly think the show is super fantastic ultra kino or anything, just that I was being a bit too harsh saying it was pointless or whatever
>>290610128I'm sorry to hear you're not schizo enough to appreciate schizokino but it's fine. The show targets an extremely specific, narrow audience (me).
>>290610128>When those started, it felt like three episodes of the same thing in a row. It felt like they were getting the character set up out of the way by having 3 episodes in a row of nonstop backstory instead of them splitting those up with other things that could have happened.I feel like that's a design choice. I recall such kind of "background episode" series being quite common with anime in the past. It was just a thing. Maybe I'm misremembering.

i liked the game but the trailer for the anime made it look like the it was going to be nothing like the game so i did not watch it

The production of the NGO anime was plagued with internal problems it was really unfortunate the creator had to be kicked out of his own project because of a bad apple. This was supposed to be fun but because of drama it was completely ruined and now potential NGO projects and sequels are dead. I hope whoever started this is happy because I sure wasn’t it ruined the anime for me.

>>290621131What's the QRD on the drama? From reading the threads I understood that nyalra left because he was being too autismo and was hard to work with but in the end he respected the team's creativity and stood behind their work and their interpretation of his vision. Still have to read through the second half episode threads, maybe there's more context in there, but since my thread survived the night I would like for it to go on with actual discussion atleast for a couple hundred posts ideally. About to throw on the last four eps brosWhat am I gonna think of them?
Just saw ep 10What the fuck was going on lmao
I cant believe KAngel is fucking dead...
Ep 11 was kinoAme's mom deserves to be skinned alive btwI could have saved Ame
Also is there an uncensored version? I just have the shitsplease releases. I'm gonna finish the show with these, maybe watch the uncensored parts afterwards if someone can direct me to them
Two more eps leftLoved the fucked up OP. Always a fan when they do things like this to signal the MC losing their mind, though I can't recall the last time I've seen this happen, but I'm sure it has. Thought her breakdown episode was pretty gutwrenching and compelling, like the first backstory episode. This is kinda what I expected from the show all along. And I see now that the karamazov girls backstories served as something of a build up to it. I also understand their motivation much more clearly now (because it was directly spelled out lol) they wanted to dethrone her to save her because they thought she would be lonely as the queen bee. In a way I guess they're right, HOWEVER, i think they all severely underestimated just how mentally deranged this woman is. The reality is that they know nothing of her actual childhood trauma or her mental illness. She's basically created two tulpas as coping mechanisms and murdered them when she felt her innocence was lost and they couldn't protect her. This is a very very far cry from>my family grew up poor but my dad was actually a good guy even though he was kinda retarded with moneyAnd>I had trouble making friends and didnt get along with my familyAme's life is so fucked up they're basically dealing with a beehive of mentall illnesses with each bee having a different fucking one.I think they may have expected to see some kind of breakdown, but from the visuals and symbolism, it very much looks like she immediately tried to kill herself as soon as the stream went offline, at the very least. I guess the final two episodes will be them actually trying to properly save her, but idk if this is gonna work out bros. Shes so fucking broken lmao.Pretty sure I can fix her though
I CAN SAVE HER
Usually in fiction i can separate my mental health wether if the creative work is fiction or reality, but i still think about that fiction has to be belivable so i as consumer can actually relateThis work is just so fucking stupid. I genuinely don't understand how people can watch this shit. Or maybe I actually relate to it so much that I want to punch the characters
HOLY SHIT KANGEL IS FUCKING BACK BROSYOU CAN'T KEEP HER DOWNNUMBER ONE STREAMER IN THE WORLD GET FUCKED HATERS AND FAGS
>>290631376She's too strong
Just finished itIdk how I feel brosWhat the fuck just happened to me?Did.. did KAngel just save my life or ruin it??Do I have to play the game now?
>>290631934
So, I just finished the showAllow me to WORDVOMIT all of your screenBasically. I liked it. I really liked it.i thought these final four episodes were all really good and the story did come together despite it meandering in the middle for those episodes. I now retroactively like the karamazov focus episodes more than I did, but I will still say that I felt they could have been implemented into the show better. Knowing now that their entire purpose was to try and save Ame and that each of them were in some way saved by her, it's kinda wholesome. It also makes alot of sense that a girl as fucked up as Ame would not be able to stay offline. It showed alot of unironic maturity and self awareness when she said she can only live by being validated online, and thus she had to make a comeback despite having a fledgling relationship with the four girls.
>>290632223Do you believe now?
There is so much in this show that is "unreliable" if that's the right word, so much of the action, probably all of the action, is mostly symbolic. Obviously these baka egirls didn't fucking fight on a space train with a motorcycle and halo type chaingun. But all of that was FUN and COOL. but it bring into question exactly what the fuck is actually happening. I think the entire final episode is the biggest question here because I think it shows several different endings at once. The first few minutes, for instance, look like what would have happened if KAngel never was a successful streamer, and it shows all of the girls in the DARK TIMELINE of their own lives. Then it shifts to the "timeline" that we actually did see, where KAngel came back and became the number one in the world, where everything ends up turning out great for the girls. However when it says that she disappeared from the internet, I don't think that's exactly what happened. It seemed to me like she became an actual real internet angel and went on to help individual fans directly in their real life. Obviously, this is a very literal interpretation of what was shown, but who is to say anything is real anyways? The entire show has been full schizo for a while at this point so this doesn't seem too far fetched.
>>290622046Something about someone on the team being greedy and treating people like dirt while firing people because they dared to stand up to him for treating people like dirt. There was an interview with Nyala and another co-worker of his that worked on the original NGO game talking about the experience after the fact and what led up to it and both their firings.
And obviously that portion at the very end was simply nyalra screaming>BUY MY FUCKING GAME YOU RETARD>>290632301I think that looking at the whole package it's definitely quite good and has more to say than I was giving it credit for when I first made this thread, and I honestly have never felt that it was too much or pretentious the entire time while watching. Infact, I felt it was very earnest with what it was trying to portay, which is some of the highest praise I ever give anything. BE THAT AS IT MAY, while I was able to empathize with Ame/KAngel and understood her plight and her character, I still can't say that I resonated with the overall story all that much. I'm just not the kind of person that the show seems to be aimed at. I'm not a full on otaku/weeb, I'm not addicted to Egirl pussy(the closest I get is feelsbrowsing the cute girl threads on /wsg/), I haven't had personal experience with BPD girls ruining my life, etc. Etc. Although I'm definitely terminally online, that mostly just encompasses shitposting on 4chan and watching YouTube videos. I'm not on shitter, I don't use dickscord, I don't watch streamers on twatch, etc. I'm a pretty centered guy and mostly well balanced, atleast I like to think so. So I can't say that this anime really affected me too deeply. It doesn't speak to me on a personal level because I'm just not in the headspace for it. There was a time in my life where I was actually deeply depressed and suicidal, but my escape from that wasn't cute internet girls. So I can't even look back and say that in the past I would have vibed with the show more back when I was a doomer. I still appreciate the show for what it is and can say that it is, objectively, really really good. I'm also very glad if there are people out there, or on here, rather, that CAN resonate with the show on a deeper level and came away with a positive feeling from it. Afterall, the ending felt quite optimistic, atleast in my opinion (dunno how much that's worth)
>>290632317>Obviously these baka egirls didn't fucking fight on a space train with a motorcycle and halo type chaingun. I also think it's really important that the show ended on a positive note and very rarely ever actually denigrated the hypothetical or "real" audience of KAngel. It never portrayed being an otaku or being addicted to egirls as a bad thing unless it was specifically talking about those who were trying to rape Ame during her breakdown (thought that was self admittedly alot of her own paranoia)What I'm trying to say is that most often it would portray her audience in a sympathetic light. Atleast it certainly did at the end during that bike ride, which is good because that feeling of hope, of connection, is what you want people to stick with as they leave the show behind. I think that the show portrays these parasocial type relationships in a complex and real light instead of just being PARASOCIAL BAD MAKE REAL FRIENDS that people tend to default to. I can't say that I have parasocial relationships with internet people, but I definitely understand it. One of the reasons I want to continue living, for example, is because I went to a 3 day concert from my favorite band and just felt so happy to hear them live that I wanted to hear them again. Sounds cringe and gay, I know, but that concert was a highlight of my silly little life! So I can understand when people form relationships with these strangers and apply value to them despite them not actually knowing eachother. So when the Otaku is saved by KAngel and she takes him to see the ocean, whether that's realy and what actually happened, or whether that was her replying to his chat or his email and answering his questions, it doesn't matter. What matters is that the connection was real to both of them, which I think is beautiful.Maybe, MAYBE, I'm coming away with too positive of a perspective here, but I can't really help it because these days I'm a pretty positive guy
>>290632493>It's reassuring that people can see the qualities of the show, even though its setup depends on it intentionally standbagging the early episodesYeah I try my best to be objective when I judge shows and stuff. I find it very frustrating when others just defualt to saying something is shit because they don't like it or don't get it. Those people are annoying and GAY.as for the>spoilerI knew I was right about that. I also just now realized the butterfly isn't just representative of KAngel herself but also the meme about the butterfly flapping its wings and causing a drastic chain of events that change the future. Duh, obviously. I think that's also cool, because people can choose which ending they want to believe in. If you want to be a total edgelord, then you're free to believe in the ending where KAngle never made it big, thus she never impacted Karamazov, and thus none of them ever accomplished their dreams while Ame was put in a mental ward. If you want to, for some fuckin reason, you can believe it! But personally I'm gonna believe in the ending where she became a real angel and helped the otaku see the ocean :)
>>290632521>I can't say that I have parasocial relationships with internet people, but I definitely understand it. Wait, did two anons start and finish or did one anon actually go schizo?

The net provides a comfortable buffer where people can just appear to be who they want to be, or be completely disconnected faceless nodes of opinion (like here!), but that doesn't foster actual healthy relationships with people. >Really condense my opinion into something that isn't wordsalad, too.Don't worry about that too much. Stellar performance by Sally as well. Bonus that it resonated with her. She was a good pick.

>>290608205I think a lot of this show went over my head, and I'm perfectly fine with that. It's a show that reminded me of the fact that you don't need to perfectly understand everything about a work of art to like it. It's art. Let it mean what you want it to mean. Not everything needs an answer.
>>290634622Perhaps, ironically, you actually got the message.
>>290634900What a good show.
>>290609925Ohh, so that's what that meant. I was wondering. Thanks, anon.
Is it still burning?

it was mid as a whole but it had some great kino like that drug episode, you rarely get to see stuff that makes you feel uncomfortable nowadays

>>290608205I honestly thought the show was interesting. I personally looked at the guy from the end as a reminder that even when you do your best, it doesn't always go the way you intended. Would be nice to have an angel to lift you up and save you. More often than not, that is impossible. All and all I think having a healthy relationship with the internet can be hard but possible. Or maybe I completely got the message of the show wrong. Either way it is an interesting anime that despite its flaws, I am glad it exists. I would give it a 6/10 if I had to put my thoughts on a score. Also as someone who interacted for over a year with a bpd girl... It is honestly scary how similar she was to Ame.
>>290637633Just to illustrate, what are your 9/10s and 10/10s?
Someone post the .webmYou know the one.
The show lacked a lot of what made the original so great. I wasn’t expecting something like a 1-on-1 adaption but there wasn’t even an attempt. We missed out on content because the author got fired and now all that’s left is this butchered version that had to borrow a lot of creative nonsense in order to fill the gaps and it didn’t even do a good job at that.
>>290638238What makes you say that?
>>290623919Based and gamepilled.
>>290632774I did come back to shit on the show every week. You just can't let retarded opinions remain unchallenged.
So many text for a show with no plot where nothing happened
>>290638238>I wasn’t expecting something like a 1-on-1 adaption but there wasn’t even an attempt. The creator of the game specifically stated on his blog there NEVER was any attempt. He just wanted a wacky late night anime where the viewer couldn't predict what would happen next.
Ame gave me a puke fetish.
>>290639236>He just wanted a wacky late night anime where the viewer couldn't predict what would happen next.Writing nonsensical bullshit isn't an accomplishment, though
>>290638420Because I actually watched it and decided it was shit. Too much yuri and not enough needy girl. I came for Ami not philosophical nonsense and anime originals who just happen to all be pretentious while getting raped by their boyfriends or life issues. It insists upon itself.
>>290638420p-chan being a tulpa entire plot was just a reference
